What were dorm room essentials for you?

I think we're allowed to help him move in. Maybe I better check on that!

It's a dry campus and you're right about the "no opposite-gender mingling" in the rooms. I'm good with both of those!

Your MEAN!>:( Drinking and women were part of the education.;) I don't think anyone had a microwave when I was in school either. We either had toaster ovens (not allowed) or use the pop corn popper (allowed) to cook other stuff.

An umbrella. Never thought I'd carry one when I was in high school put quickly got one for all the walking. Get a good one that collapses as small as possible. Cheap ones didn't hold up.

Your MEAN!

He got into 4 universities, he chose this one because he made it on the soccer team. His girlfriend will be at a different school, so he's not too concerned over the policy...yet!

As for alcohol, the school is located in the Historic district of St. Aug where there are lots and lots of bars and I'm sure some of the older students live in apartments and have parties. He'll be ok. ;)

When I started we had 20 keg parties in the dining hall. By the end only personal consuption containers were allowed if both roommate were legal. Hmm and I think the next year no alcohol. >:(

I probably could have missed out on the three day hang over new student week my freshman year.

Poker table (complete with chips and a few decks of Kems)

Bong/vaporizor

Ping pong table (so your son can win at beer pong often enough to be able to sober up in time for classes/poker games)

Big screen Hi-Def television w/ Blu-Ray player (so your son's friends keep him supplied with porn and pirated movies, freeing up his own time and bandwidth for more studying/poker/beer pong)

More seriously:

Wireless router (preferably IEEE 802.11n compliant) with built in ethernet switch (preferably gigabit ethernet).

Extra ethernet cables.

Optional, but highly recommended, would be a mobile broadband card and subscription. I don't know what school your son will be attending, but UCF's network reliability leaves much to be desired, as does the connection speed.

A laptop computer. Having a computer that can be moved to quiet study areas can be very beneficial. If he already has a reasonably new desktop machine, then an inexpensive netbook might be sufficient, depending on his needs and computer knowledge.

An external hard drive. Hard drives crash. Data gets lost. Professors don't care. It will be your son's responsibility to make sure his important files are backed up and that he has access to the back-ups. I would recommend a drive at least 2x the capacity of the drive in his computer. Suitable software for automating backups is also recommended. I'm not sure what Windows users recommend, but on a Mac, I would recommend using Time Machine (included with OS X) in combination with SuperDuper!

An inexpensive laser printer. (Most any printer will suffice, but laser printers tend to have lower per page printing costs as well as excellent print quality.)

A small tool kit. (Crescent wrench, pliers, a few screwdrivers, small hammer, quality flashlight, duct tape, WD-40, etc.)
Math tutoring available. Only $6! per hour! First lesson: Factorials!

From crashing on a campus or moving someone in and out of College for almost the last 5 years straight - get a rug for the floor. Most dorms have tile or old nasty carpet and you never know just how dirty that carpet is so a rug is nice on that, if its tile it will keep the feet warmer in the winter. Posters, etc are in every room. Hot Pots are not allowed for the fire hazard, same with anything that can cook anything that well (crock pots included usually). Water pitcher/filter seems to be pretty well used every year when we store stuff in our place again.Depending on the shower situation shoes/sandals are almost mandatory unless he likes athletes foot all the time. A little shower bag is nice too if they are shared showers. Spares of shower stuff helps when you forget and leave your shampoo in the shower and it gets stolen/thrown out helps also.

No "gender mingling" in the room??!?!

Porn. Lots of porn. He'll need some variety....

Yup, buy him a fooking subscription to a quality site...it'll prevent "surfing" and he'll be virus free...

Don't forget the laptop cable lock for the laptop. My Sisters laptop was stolen from her dorm room within the first month of being there. All it takes is 10 secs for someone to notice the door unlocked/open and snatch laptop and whatever else is lying around.

but we had one of those little electric pots that boiled water for soups, etc.

Could that be what the school is calling a "hot pot"? I've used a hot pad and a crock pot, but never a hot pot so I didn't know what that was. A microwave or hot pad isn't allowed in the rooms.

We are getting a mini-fridge, but it has to be bought through the school. :S

He's going to Flagler University in St. Augustine. I told him he's close enough to come home every weekend and visit his mama, so I won't be redoing his room anytime soon! ;)

Yes...that is what they meant by a hot pot. Those things are great. Perfect for ramen. That's the other thing he needs, lots and lots of ramen. I lived off that stuff in college. :D Also, a good robe for going to and from the showers. Also a good laundry bag for dragging it to and from the laundry room (or your house ;)).

Since the opposite gender won't be allowed in the rooms, that may not be exactly the effect [skymama] is looking for. :D
