What to do in Flagstaff, AZ?

Recommended Posts

Go to Coco's. Their creamy salad dressing is great!

There is Meteor crater, also there are some caves East and North of Flagstaff (Lava River IIRC). I did that a couple of decades ago, and they were really fascinating. Walnut Canyon has some really cool cave dwellings--I thought those were better than Mesa Verde.

Depends on what you like to do, how much time you have and how far you want to drive.

There are some cool shops, restaurants, and breweries around Flagstaff. There is also Lowell Observatory and Lava River Caves.

A little bit North, there is Wupatki National Monument and Sunset crater (on the same state park road as Wupatki).

Further North there is North up Antelope Canyons.

If you want to drive ago South down 89 and through Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona and Jerome. Or down I-17 to Argosanti and Montezumea Castle.

To name a few things, and also some casinos. I have been to all of these except the Lava River Caves (but have heard they are very cold and dark), and have liked all of them.

Dara Thai Restaurant

Dara Thai and Little Thai Kitchen are my faves for Thai. Diablo Burger if you want a fancy burger. Mama Burger if you want greasy, yummy burger and fries. Fat Olives for Italian. Salsa Brava for Mexican.

There are some beautiful trails heading up Kendrick Peak, Bill Williams Mountain, and Humphreys Peak (from Snowbowl); if you're going in August get on the trail at sunrise, since you don't want to be at high elevation during the ubiquitous afternoon thunderstorms.

Flagstaff has a ton of great rock climbing, from sport to trad to bouldering; and three climbing gyms - two for bouldering only and one with top-rope and lead climbing.

There is also Flagstaff Extreme, a ropes and obstacle course high in the trees that'll keep you busy for hours.

Finally, it's not too long of a drive down to the Cottonwood airport and Red Rock Skydiving. They're very friendly to fun-jumpers and the view on the ride to altitude, with Sedona on one side and Jerome on the other, is beautiful.

I may try to talk my brother in law into this. I have not jumped in over eight years and I am getting the itch.

You could probably pass on the Grand Canyon and spend the full time hiking around Flagstaff. (If you're going to GC then that should be all you do on the trip, not just make a day visit for an overpass.) I see people posting all of the good ones - great outdoors and places to eat around Flagstaff.

I can't get the GC visit from Chevy Chase in "Vacation" out of my head now, thanks!:D:D

That's what I always think of when someone says they visited the Grand Canyon but mean they just drove near it and stopped at an overlook. The last time I went to Sedona/Flagstaff my girlfriend wanted to "visit" the Grand Canyon. I wasn't going to burn a day of vacation driving there and back just to look at it from the rim. Somehow I avoided an argument, she told everyone she was going to see it while we were out there, but hiking around the Red Rocks blew the socks off a shitty day trip.
