  1. Balance of both for me. I love my job most days (90%) because I get to work on a construction site in my own office and at the end of each job I can walk away knowing that I have helped to create something that will be used for YEARS to come. I understand that my line of work requires extra hours and I put those in with almost no bitching because I am paid EXTREMELY well for my current position in life. That said, I do not live to work. I enjoy my days off as do what I enjoy to release stress from the work week and to prepare for the upcoming week. I started riding motorcycles and then took up skydiving to get that release of energy and tension.
  2. Let me try and understand this... (1) You've been involved with this sport at least 3 times as long as I have, yet you've only jumped half as much as I have. You do however have 25x as many posts as I do. (2) You "complain" and insult women who you deem to be larger than your minimum acceptable waist size, yet you currently don't have a girlfriend or even a fuck-buddy. (3) You complain about the state of modern engineering, yet you are in a position with the government that has no direct ties to researching, manufacturing, or producing any sort of product or experimental devices. (4) You whine about how engineers today have no sense of passion, but again, you aren't really an engineer at this point, even if you once were an engineer, now you're just a bureaucrat. I fail to see what is wrong with engineers, but I readily see what is wrong with you.
  3. Lenovo X120e (Netbook w/ AMD Fusion CPU/GPU) Lenovo X220 (Intel processor) Dell 14z/15z (bigger but not bad) Asus UX-21E (Ultrabook) Or if she can wait, Asus Transformer 2 with keyboard. I am personally waiting for the Asus T2 and buying one of those to replace my aging Asus 1101HA netbook.
  4. Just for the record....you had NO recovery arc on that turn, or it started about 0.25 sec prior to impact, and you still had some oversteer in there... You appeared to be holding the fronts until just before impact, while still turning. It would be hard to tell without outside video. /not bashing on you man, just clarifying for others reading Completely agree, I wouldn't be surprised in the least if your canopy hit the ground at the same time you did. If that was the usual altitude for a 270 I don't know how you didn't bounce earlier than this because there was no way you were recovering after you continued onto the 270 after the 180.
  5. Hope you can find a solution and keep jumping. I had some sinus blockage all yesterday which really sucked. It was my first time with it while skydiving and I didn't know how it would affect me. During the climb to altitude and after I was on the ground it was pretty uncomfortable, not to mention last night when I had to fly home on Delta.
  6. I probably realized I was too low when I was already coming into the ground, but I can't say for sure because my memories of that turn and crash are either super blurry or non existent.. Jesus, that was a jawdropper. What altitude were you at when you executed the 270? 300ft? That's pretty crazy, especially knowing that my Spectre 190 takes almost 400-500ft to execute a 360 turn and it's 60sf larger than your canopy and dives a lot less. Heal up good.
  7. According to what I saw this weekend, nope, no traffic pattern rules. Awesome to see experience jumpers with hundreds/thousands of jumps chasing the wind sock on a light & variable day even after the DZO & S&TA told everyone default left hand pattern. I CAN'T LAND DOWNWIND OR CROSSWIND!!!! Best part was watching people flare to their shoulders/chest and then try and run it out and flop on their face. Don't quite understand that they've got a good foot or two left of flare to go. DOH!
  8. Alright man, go on with your bad self then. Wasn't trying to clutter, I was trying to do the exact same thing that you did to Sangi, but if you can't see that, fine, that's your problem. Pretty sure I explained why I haven't been jumping as of late...
  9. Looking at that picture of the before, were there any additional rotations before impacting? I wouldn't think it possible, and if not, holy shit, you went almost straight down and are really lucky to have missed the really unforgiving gray stuff. I'd recommend reading the book Deep Survival (http://www.amazon.com/Deep-Survival-Who-Lives-Dies/dp/0393326152), since from what you're saying you froze at a critical moment and trusted the world to "right itself". This book goes into detail about those types of situations and examines the relationship between why some people "make it through" and some people don't. It is VERY interesting. Heal fast, don't skimp on rehab, and get back on the horse.
  10. A. Why do I need a certain number of jumps to call you a hypocrit? B. No need to get a B-license until I get 100 jumps since the only legit reason I see for getting a B is so I can become a coach. The paperwork is filled out, all I need is a check dive. C. The only reason I'm not at 150 jumps (that would be 150 in little more than 4 months) at this point is because I stopped at 99 so I could do my 100th with friends at the DZ I learned to jump at. I haven't jumped in a month and a half and the weather has been beautiful. D. Why are you getting so defensive over a simple question? do i have to justify myself on here!? hello!? look at posts like this from that guy and tell me again!? Thanks for pointing out that thread. I clearly misunderstood multiple aspects of canopy flight and was lucky enough to have a couple of very experienced people point that out to me and in PMs discuss it over. Pretty sure I had about 25 jumps at that point. Any other excuses?
  11. i'll just do it like you, and wont mention my jumpnumbers, nor my exit-weight.. talking about avoidance, oh, the irony! edited for spelling and sarcasm If you had looked just a little harder at my profile instead of getting target-fixated by your attempt to craft a perfect comeback you may have noticed that my wingloading is in fact listed. oh yea, of course, i'm taking screen-shots of every douchebags profile i look at. still forgot to add your jumpnumbers tough, you updated your profile just NOW. you even list "canopy piloting" in your interests, forgot to edit that one too!? or is "canopy piloting" pulling toggles and doing a standard-pattern in your opinion!? you probably dont even have a clue what a "base" is. i also noted that you jump in colorado; should be pretty high there, right!? so we can deduct a size or even two of your canopy, assuming it's two sizes, that would be a 139, that would equal a WL of 1.32. at your experience-level, i would really advise you to upsize quite a bit! i've said it before and will say it again; go create your own little thread if you want to talk about me and stop cluttering up this one. or isnt that retarded enough for you!? do you have something to contribute for sangi, you expert skydiver!? Fine, if you want to disregard him, why not take a shot at me? I've asked you the same questions multiple times and haven't gotten a response, maybe because I'm flying a conservative wing at a conservative loading?. My profile has been up-to-date since before all this went down too, wouldn't want you trying to use that as a way out. What kind of excuse do you have for me? What about Ron? Practice what you preach or admit that you're a hypocrit.
  12. You start "swooping" now. To be a consistent and safe swooper it is all built upon the foundation of basic canopy flight. A solid pattern with accuracy. Not just accuracy to land in the peas most of the time, but accuracy with the pattern. Since to swoop well you must position yourself over a point on the ground at a certain altitude. That point on the ground moves around with conditions and that certain altitude changes a little bit due to environmental factors. Learning how to manipulate your canopy in slow flight is also key. As is learning about stall characteristics. The recovery arc effects you more than just how much altitude it takes your canopy to come out of a dive. Understanding how it effects your canopy from a simple toggle turn or coming out of brakes makes a big difference. Pulling on a front riser is Step 2 of the progression. Step 1 is becoming a very skilled and experienced canopy pilot with whatever canopy you currently have. Absolutely correct. I'm sorry, I should have clarified my statement to say "Yes, I do intend on becoming a high-performance canopy pilot."
  13. Uh, yea! I love to launch my civic off speed bumps. It's da coolest! In all seriousness, yes, I do plan on swooping. Probably starting with a Xfire2 149 at 500+ jumps and slowly working my way down from there. It's a long ways off though (2 years at my current rate).
  14. Can't wait for halloween !. I haven't jumped in a month & a half because I promised friends at my first DZ that I'd do #100 with them. I left myself a cushion of 4 jumps to keep me from going into shock, but I picked my rig up from the rigger after it had some work done on the PC & Canopy and HAD to test it out. And then another jump, you know, just in case, then two more. And before I knew it my cushion was gone
  15. Not having jumped in that portion of the country and going strictly off of the website I'd have to say yes. Typical website lacking in details and photographs. The only thing that makes me pause is that if you go to the airport website there is a link for Skydive Jersey, so don't know what to think about that.
  16. Neither. Unless you need something RIGHT NOW, wait for the Galaxy Nexus with Ice Cream Sandwich.
  17. YMMV, but I've always found that the cake is a lying whore. :(
  18. Wow. All I can say to that. Read through both threads. It's amazing how history keeps repeating itself and the guilty parties never believe it will happen to them.
  19. Very true. Back in high school when I was going for my private pilot license (never got it, paying for college took priority), I was learning to fly at Quantico in Virginia. HMX-1 is stationed there which means they've got C-17s and C-130s constantly flying in and out depending on the president's travel schedule. One day I was returning on a solo flight and entered the pattern behind a C-130. I was about a mile back and at about 1500 feet when all of a sudden the plane got buffeted and thrown into a dive. I quickly recovered and got back into downwind, now probably 1.25mi back. Same thing happened. Took about a second for it to click that his wake was frickin huge and I notified the tower I was heading to the pattern entry point to give my self some space. Wake turbulence is definitely taught during ground school and the entire PPL progression. It should be included in the AFF program since our wings are susceptible to it and if it occurs it'll most likely be during the pattern where altitude is minimal.
  20. Nope, no surprises. Actually, I'm happy LSU is #1, even if by 3 thousandths of a point. I hope they're #1 when they come up to Tuscaloosa, so we can yank it from them. By the way, Alabama also started #2 in the first BCS rankings in 2009, behind Texas. Yep. I gladly cheered on Bama and laughed when McCoy got taken out. Don't mind Bama, hate LSU. We play you guys again in two years, hopefully it isn't a repeat of 2 years ago
  21. That is a good one! Agreed. Stupid is as stupid does. I'll help out, but there better be a damn good reason. If you were jumping and decided an extra couple of jumps a month were more important than health insurance, sorry, you're up shit creek.
  22. Where's your shot across my bow regarding my questions and comments about your skill level/abilities? You think jumping in winds where that would occur would help anything besides increasing the percentage of shit happening? I fly a big ole Spectre 190 at 1.1 and unless the winds are above 20mph (in which case, I'm not jumping), I can make forward progress. It's all about your pattern!
  23. This intrigues me as well. You keep bashing your "friend" saying that he was dumb for jumping a canopy loaded so heavily but you are jumping a similar canopy and loaded fairly high. What are YOU doing to change your canopy piloting progression? You are still jumping a high performance canopy at a pretty heavy loading when you don't even have a D-license (or the Swiss equivalent)? I doubt he'll reply to you on this one, although I called him out on it and he started reeling off excuses for why he is different here: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4193633;search_string=1.9;#4193633 He subsequently deleted his post but not before I quoted it in my reply. Ironically, one of his arguments was it was only a Safire. Now what was it that Sangi was flying.....? I brought it up as well and never got a response. Seems like VB likes to critique others but when he gets asked the same questions he shuts up and refuses to say a word.
