  1. Why would you expect people who have been mocked and blown-off to try and fix a guy after the fact. The time to help was before and they tried until they were blue in the face. It was his decisions which put him where he now is and it wasn't like this was a fluke or freak accident. Everyone looking at those videos that YOU posted cringed and knew that he'd be in a hospital bed sooner or later. I refuse to lend a dollar or shed a tear for an obviously stupid jumper who believed himself to be above the established guidelines and paths to becoming a competent canopy pilot. This may come off as harsh, but I see it as putting money towards rehab for an addict who OD'd but miraculously lived. He's got three options at this point (a) Never jump again due to extensive injuries, (b) unfucks himself and heeds the advice of more experienced jumpers and if he still pursues canopy piloting, he does so at a established and reasonable pace, (c) nothing changes and you attend a funeral in the not so distant future. It's his decision to make. Giving him a book won't do a damn thing.
  2. I liked the article a lot. As someone who wants to eventually get into canopy piloting (way down the road) I try and read/watch whatever I can to get more information. The biggest thing that I took away from the article was that, similar to riding a motorcycle, something WILL happen and most time it's a swooper's experience which will determine the outcome. I.e. there are two types of swoopers, those who have had something happen and those who haven't YET had something happen.
  3. BCS is out and not really surprising. Props to Clemson for representing the ACC. Boise is still up at #5, very interested to see how they do once Moore leaves. Very interested in the LSU/Bama game and the OU/OSU game to see who wins. As for my great Chokies, we are once again lurking the top 10. Woohoo for maintaining the status quo! Unfortunately, I don't get to go to any games this season :(.
  4. That's why I voted dick first. & I'll just post here NHL over baseball. Personally, I hate baseball & think it's horribly boring. But as for fitness, look at their star players? Babe Ruth was a tubby. o and I totally agree with hokierower that rowers are the hottest athletes. I LOVED being a rower. hot muscle-y men walking around half naked....mmmm THANK YOU!!! Another faithful to the best sport on the planet. Nothing better than a top tier NCAA lightweight women's team getting ready for a race. I miss rowing...hopefully one of these days I can get back on the water. The fact that we're both drooling over the opposite sex of the same sport proves our point! Rowers=sexiest athletes out there. .... wait what sports were we supposed to be talking about again? My girlfriend rowed lightweight in college!
  5. Pick up a new Galaxy. No need to go with an audible or digital if you're just starting out. KISS

  7. I'll take my favorite athletes/sport over all others: Rowers So far as the original post is concerned, I'd say a hockey guy. Besides, if they get in a fight he's got two knifes attached to his feet.
  8. Having never been, I'd say your best bet if you went, would be to talk to the different companies and if you decide on a manufacturer for a container you can always have them measure you on the spot so there can't be any sort of mix-up.
  9. In my limited experience, Mile Hi in Colorado had a pretty spectacular view under canopy from 8k
  10. Maybe it wouldn't be useful as a full time rig, but for someone looking for a beach rig or water rig it probably wouldn't be too bad. I'll defer to the more experienced on this one though.
  11. All the Apple Geniuses in the world couldn't put Steve Jobs back together again. They refused to believe that he was capable of getting sick.
  12. Ninja 250r Honda CBR 250 Suzuki GS500 SV650 is probably a little much for a first bike and I'd definitely stay away from a supersport. I rode a GS500 for about 8 months and could ride the piss out of it in the hills NW of San Antonio. The only thing I couldn't keep up with was in top speed, but that baby could throw itself around the corners like no ones business. After 8 months I sold it and upgraded to a Triumph Street Triple R. Think of upsizing to a bigger bike like downsizing to a smaller canopy, i.e. no reason to go bigger unless you're wringing every last bit of performance out of your current model.
  13. Didn't like the guy, hate the company, but I gotta admit that he was one hell of a marketer and he directly and indirectly forced development (spurned, not invented or innovated) sooner than it might have taken. RIP turtleneck dude
  14. While I think the idea is good, the design seems like a pretty daunting task. In addition to the original structure, the engineer must create an additional room with additional recirculating fans to keep the air traveling. The structure itself has to be pretty big, 20x30 at a minimum for a pilot to get any sort of use out of it, and even that's pretty small. That's 600 sq ft. The SVCO tunnel has 4x350hp turbines which can push air through the existing 120 sq ft. tunnel at 160-170mph. Even at only 20mph, that extra 480 sq. ft. will require some honking turbines to push the "residual air" through the new system. And if you don't have enough and space them out just right you can run into spots where the air flow isn't the same. With that said, the only time that it would be able to be used would be when the tunnel is not in use by funjumpers as you never know when the flyer(s) will need full power. Full power = no residual air. Sadly, it just doesn't make sense from a financial point of view. Canopy flight is not a carnival ride that one time participants can jump in and out of without serious risk. No one timers, no income, no ROI.
  15. SVCO is the same way. The instructors have a series of hand signals that tell the "driver" what percentage they/student need.
  16. I don't understand why you keep trying to make a very simple concept more difficult. It's almost like you are too proud/arrogant to agree that people at our stage in this sport do not have the PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE to perform these maneuvers at a critically low altitude. Instead you try and insert unfounded crap into your statements in the hopes that it distracts people from the original topic. Why?
  17. Don't know why you need to do a diving turn to make your landings softer. I fly a Spectre (another bulky 7-cell according to you) and can tip-toe the landings with a simple straight-in approach in steady winds from 0-20mph. Anything over that and I won't be jumping. Additionally, if your brake lines aren't long enough you're literally folding your canopy in half when you use a front riser. Call me crazy, but a deformed wing doesn't fly as designed which is a bad thing so close to the ground, especially in turbulence. Maybe you should learn to fly your canopy a wee bit better rather than relying on diving to gain speed. This is almost as ridiculous a question as your AAD thread.
  18. Yep, I was taught this and use it frequently. It's an easy way to confirm that you both see each other, similar to wing wagging for planes. If I don't get a response then I stay the hell away from them.
  19. That's too bad Let's go Hokies! Another year of destroying the ACC coastal division!
  20. You seem to have a lot of little problems that you blow WAYYYY out of proportion. No wonder you're having problems finding a sub size 8 woman if you go apoplectic over a simple input device. Just an observation.
  21. I was doing mantis after about 20 minutes in the tunnel between jump 4 & 5. It's most likely up to your coach and how easily you're picking up on the concepts that they're teaching you. Don't progress to the next step if you can't handle the previous one. Even after learning the mantis, I don't fly it in the sky, rather I fly the modified box-man that pltearth was refering to. I fly my body so that I can do what I need to, not so that I maintain a certain "style".
  22. +1 I bought my first canopy, Spectre 190 w/ 350 jumps, for $1200. I'll be selling it in about 120-150 jumps for probably the same price (with a new lineset). I'll be able to buy my next canopy without having to spend any more money! I weigh 210 OTD, and bought a 190 based upon the recommendations of my instructors who saw me jumping and flying a 230 Spectre. I downsized to a 210 Spectre (rental gear) for about 5 jumps before moving to my 190 at 20 jumps. I will be keeping it for at least 200 jumps and won't think about selling until I hit 200 which means it'll probably be sold after 220ish. YMMV. A 210 is just as popular as a 190 and you should be able to buy, put 100 jumps, and sell it without taking any significant price drop. If your instructors recommend a 210 for you, jump a 210 until you are very comfortable with it. Again, talk to YOUR instructors. The very experienced jumpers here (not me) can recommend the same thing over and over to us newer jumpers but they're going on experience and have never seen you land.
