  1. how many terrorist laptop computer devices have been thwarted by asking the laptop carrier to turn on the laptop? lol nathaniel My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  2. Neither can this one. I've them both ways to represent either value interchangably, sometimes even in the same article. IMO you're better off just using context to figure it out rather than trusting the author. Network context -> bits, system or application context -> bytes. I've never seen a solid reference on the subject...and given the amount of ambiguity I've seen with the terms I'm not sure I'd believe any purported reference was authoritative.. $0.02 My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 5. then start with the folder and work your way down. the owner can always change perms on a file. if you are the administrator but not the owner you can take ownership and become the owner in this way (you can't give ownership back without hax0ring iirc) . 8. I'm no chemist, but ozone I would categorize at the extreme end of free radicals. People talk about eating anti-oxidants as healthy, ozone is a super-duper oxidant. It's a gas tho, so maybe talking about it in a nutritional context isn't exactly on target... It's an extremely reactive chemical...if it gets at your cells basically it starts rearranging things with prejudice. The mild concentrations you will experience it breathing polluted "fresh" air will slowly do damage to your body over time. If you experience it in concentrated form it will severely burn you. Think bleach vapor. http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/chemweek/ozone/ozone.html nathaniel My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
  9. I took my alti on a commercial flight in the US and they didn't depressurize the plane till we were at what seemed like 15000 or so feet (ie they kept pressure at ground level until 15000). On the descent they started early too...when we landed the inside of the plane had been AGL for quite some time. Got some strange looks from the passenger next to me, but security didn't say a word when I sent it through the xray machine. nathaniel My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 11. Have you ever heard of key signing? Man-in-the-middle attack? The point about sharing public keys is true, but anyone else can share "your" key too, and give theirs instead of yours. An attacker doing this to both sides in a transaction can effectively read or spoof the transaction. This is (part of) the reason key signing companies like verisign, thwate, etc came into existence. nathaniel My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. 12. Using PGP for a one-time transaction doesn't give you good safety unless you can exchange keys securely (ie, not over teh intarnet). but it's better than plaintext... If I needed to send someone I just met my CC# and all I had was the internet to do it, I would be more worried about its safety in his/her hands than in transit. If the recipient was in a public space when s/he read your email any shoulder-surfer could bogart it, etc. If you're really paranoid I think escrow services are the way to go...gets you a margin of confidence in your goods as well as your CC#. but it costs money so maybe not worth it if your transaction is going to be small. nathaniel My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 13. my experience with HP (and every other whole-PC retail manufacturer) is that they cost too much. but then again I work with computers all day and wouldn't flinch if I had to re-seat a PCI card... the system you purchased is a bit of a generalist--it does not seem geared for doing anything particularly well but it isn't deficient in any major way (except the video controller...but only CAD engineers and serious gamers should care). Every now and then I spec out my dream system a la carte and of late it's been coming to ~ 1500 USD incl one or more monitors. That's not too much more than the 1000USD list price of this HP thingie without monitors. Since it doesn't sound like you had to pinch your bank account for it you're probably in good shape. It would have cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars for a comparable PC 5 years ago, and in 5 years it will be worth less than $100. nathaniel My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 14. Sometimes your employer doesn't have a choice in what you have to sign... The SEC is pretty nuts about oaths and signatures, just about anyone who works in any finance related industry has probably signed here and there... Nothing evil, tho. just stuff like, this is my criminal history and it is correct, I agree not to swindle people, I don't work on the boards of directors of the companies whose stock I'm rating, etc. anything beyond legal / regulatory requirements is probably a bad idea tho...my rights are not for sale at the moment, but for the right price I might be willing to arrange a lease nathaniel My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 17. pardon my french, but this sounds like a user interface catastrophe. who in their right mind makes menu-driven interfaces in C? I know several people at work that would do it, but none of them is in their right mind give me a cli any day nathaniel My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 19. My cat only seems to think that my hands are part of me if she can see they're attached to my face--arms and shoulders visible. When I go to sleep at night or wake up in the morning and I'm underneath a blanket she goes nuts if I tickle her out of the side of the blanket, like she's being attacked by the Thing. nathaniel My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 20. I think I like that answer better than mine too =) On second thought it's probably not such a good idea to cancel a check you sent to the gov't. Maybe send in a photocopy / carbon copy of the original check with the corrected return. nathaniel My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. 21. In your shoes I think I'd cancel the first check and send a whole nother copy of everything. My instinct is they'll reject the whole thing and penalize him for filing late... You can probably also get away with just filing for an extension tonight / tomorrow, then all you pay extra is the interest on the amount due. not a lawyer nathaniel My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 22. I voted for sexy but if you don't have any other facial piercings you might want to start with something else imo. unless maybe your stud is really discreet...which by chance you can probably get away with depending on where you work. a girl I knew had one so small you could only see it if you were up close and personal, it was really cute. nathaniel My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. 24. I've done a little reading on the Korean War and the impression I got was that it ended b/c the US and China both decided they didn't want it to get Ugly. 25. I would have voted for #1 but I don't think antibiotics encourage virus evolution...they don't have any effect on viruses at all... It it was tuberculosis (caused by drug-resistant bacteria and spreading out of control in eastern europe) you'd have gotten my vote. nathaniel My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir.
