  1. I use SQL Server a bunch. It is available through Microsoft's Action Pack program ($300 for all of Microsoft's Back Office Server Software), which is designed to be licensed for developers and small applications. Although Access has a concurrent locking mechanism and works for limited numbers of users, it is not as versatile. You will notice that an ".ldb" file exists alongside the database file for as long as there are users against an Access database. Although SQL Server won't break with lot's of users, setting the concurrent update restrictions to a stringent level will degrade performance. They call it "isolation level", and you might want to leave it at the default level of READ COMMITTED unless you are really worried: An isolation level determines the degree of isolation of data between concurrent transactions. The default SQL Server isolation level is Read Committed. Here are the other isolation levels (in the ascending order of isolation): Read Uncommitted, Read Committed, Repeatable Read, Serializable. See SQL Server books online for an explanation of the isolation levels. Be sure to read about SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL, which lets you customize the isolation level at the connection level. Maybe that's more than you needed, but it's an option if this will be an application that more and more people will be using over time. The disadvantage to SQL Server is that you need to do a Web page (.asp or Visual Studio .NET), Visual Basic, or other programming language to work with the database. You don't get turn-key form design like you do with MS Access, which is more of an end-user tool. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. 2. That map looks as if it was drawn up before the days of the population shift to the West. States such as Oregon, Washington, California, and Arizona are not as sparse as they once were. I have no idea when the boundaries were last re-drawn. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. I keep falling out the door of the plane. Harry, FB #4143

  4. If you don't have enough altitude to chop (which I recommend if you have little experience with rear-riser flares), bear in mind that the flare input is MUCH LESS on the rear risers for the same amount of canopy flare, as compared to the brakes. My Stilleto 135 may have over a foot of flare on the brack lines to about flatten the canopy, while the input for the same effect with the rear risers is about 3 inches. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. 7. I agree with you on the runaway nature of some awards and the way trials seem to go, and of course I'm not a lawyer. In spite of this, it looks as though the authors of the Constitution were influenced by their origins. They had an inate fear of despotism by the state. That's why we ended up with trial by jury, right to bear arms, and separation of church and state, to name a few. Many of these people were devout, but they feared the power of the church WITHIN the state. The framers of the Constitution knew guns kill, but they allowed possession anyway. They knew all jurors aren't smart, but here we have trial by jury. It's always been up to us to see how to make all this work. Before you rework the Constitution, make sure you are prepared for changes others may propose at a Consitutional convention, some of which we may not like AT ALL. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. 8. Without going into all the points: 1) I still think we should look into drilling in ANWR sooner rather than later, since there is a relatively small area they want to develop and it will help. 2) SUVs. I can't believe we are back in this situation again after past oil shocks. I agree with you. People are buying large vehicles with no incentives to conserve other than the increasing price of oil. Now we've got this fleet of big vehicles that's going to be out there for a while in the market. Now is the time to start with ending the CAFE exemption, since there will be a lead time in development of technology and getting more efficient vehicles in the pipeline (a pun?). 9. People will slowly go though a period of reconcilliation as time passes. If you look you can always find someone who is mentally close to the edge to begin with, like the guy in this article. That this happened does not change the fact that people still have the responsibility to run their lives or to seek help. I include myself in the legion of people who have felt they were in despair or needed a hand at some point in their lives. The story marginalizes itself with its trumped-up sensationalism, regardless of the deceased's motivations. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. 10. Some of you may recall a reporter asking Al Gore prior to the LAST presidential election about why he sends his kid to St. Albans, a well known private school in the District. His response was "Leave my family out of this!". While people have a right to make private choices, it underscores an opportunity that a lot of folks want for their kids. School choice is born of the notion that if repeated infusions of cash don't work, maybe competition with or within the public education system will work. Nothing motivates like an incentive or hope. I am grateful to my parents and those of my school classmates who made sacrifices. While I am not Catholic (never attended Parochial school), I never attended public school at any time in my life, not including the fact that Cornell University received New York state and Fed funding and University of Michigan received state dollars. It made a difference, with smaller class sizes and other opportunities. Anyone who can't understand why DC residents want their kids to have better opportunities to learn shouldn't have to look very far for examples that explain why. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. 11. Quote: I, too, remember a time when America was a bright, shiny beacon of hope, but that was then. Recent events have thrown the book open, and the world has seen what it's really about. People have become less open to the spread of U.S. culture, and the export of feral capitalism, and are now viewing it with suspicion. If the election has done anything in terms of influencing the outside world, I suspect that it's prompted a good few people to draw a line in the sand and say 'thanks, but no thanks'. /quote. But they're still fighting to get in (immigration)! Also, part of globalization means that we buy even more of other peoples' stuff. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. 12. The courts are there to interpret the constitution. They are not there to legislate moral issues, although some peoples' view on what they expect the courts to do has them looking to judges. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. 13. What percent of physics profs voted for Kerry? What percentage of New Yorkers voted for Bush? What percentage of suburbanites in Raleigh, NC voted for Bush? What percent of Atalnta computer programmers voted for Bush? It may come down to beliefs, reasons other than a shingle (education), that determine the vote. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. 14. Regardless of the merits of a anti-same-sex-marriage Consitutional amendment, it takes I believe a two thirds majority of the House and Senate (correct?) to call a Constitutional convention. Once done, the floor is open to all kinds of potential amendments, by the rules. It's a Pandora's Box. That's at least as good a reason that this amendment thing should be avoided. 15. I am not sure TH Kerry is shallow. However, I think she is impolitic (not inclined toward being a good politician). She had difficulty picking her moments and style when it came to speaking her mind. I liked the way she apologized to Laura Bush, although many people in society think of a "real" job as being outside of the home, regardless of how hard being a mother can be. While I am obviously not a mother, I know how tough is it must have been for mine. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. 16. People pay to share that number in their region. It's just a bigger billboard that shows up more places. I wasn't aware that our DZ shared a subscription to 1800skydive with ASC, although I know SDC has used it for years. As far as I know, SDC does not accept Skyride stuff, but I will ask. I doubt it very much. I will pass it on to the DZOs when I see them tomorrow. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. I keep falling out the door of the plane. 18. Talk to your instructors about it. If people have been staying with you they must hae been doing something to accomplish that. 19. 1-800-skydive is not quite the same thing as Skyride, because when you call the number you get a real drop zone that represents itself as the same entity to everyone, not as SkydiveSomethingelse. It's regional call forwarding. It's not the same thing as leading people to believe you are in one place and trying to get them to go to another. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. 20. Being familiar with the Detroit area, I went to SkydiveDetroit.com. As far as I could see, they made no representation about any physical location. There were references to a toll-free number on the site. There are only two things I can see. Are any of the pictures they use protected by copyright? Do the owners care, and have they done anything? If there are DZ's taking the certificates, then I think it may come back to the benefit that those DZ's provide to Skyride.com. That provides support, and there isn't anything illegal in that. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. I keep falling out the door of the plane. 21. As time goes by I always love the people and beauty of the sky and scenery, but truthfully I have very little time for the scenery in freefall (unless solo sometimes) and if there's a lot of canopy traffic. Once you jump more you will decide if a team is for you or whether you just jump for the pleasure of it with no set schedule. You will decidee whether you like freefly, R/W, CRW, whatever, or some combination thereof. The more versatile and current you are, the more fun skydiving can be. You may also find yourself getting more conservative when weather conditions are marginal, since you will have seen and experienced more. There's always time to jump another day. Lastly, you will come away with some lifelong friends. I know that wasn't your question, but it seemed relevant. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. 22. Certainly, silly is the word that comes to mind when I hear of someone jumping like that in the winter. Just like the time I was at The Ranch in 2000 and this Russian guy was swimming in the 40 degree pond as our load was leaving. You can get thin fabric gloves at Wal-Mart or elsewhere that fit under a pair of summer gloves. They seem to breath better than surgical gloves and keep me warmer in winter. They also allow enough feel to pull and handle the brakes and risers. However, for some of the newer Parasport helmets it is hard to push the button to open the face cover because you can't push the button all the way to open it. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. 23. I know someone who had his booty catch on the step. He hung from the step until an instructor who happened to be on the load grabbed a hook knife and kept sawing until part of the knife handle broke. He was able to recover and complete the sawing process until the jump suit came free and the jumper descended normally. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. 24. Don't forget that it helps to be able to picture yourself in a positive context when you jump, setting standards that are achievable. When you jump (not if), your last thought AT EXIT IN THE DOOR should be something positive that goes with a deep breath. I can tell you from experience that experience is only part of it! Attitude is the rest. You musn't be a defeatist. Anger will help, but in the end you must transform it to positive energy. Find the transition point when it mentally suits. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline. I keep falling out the door of the plane. Harry, FB #4143
  25. I had to repeat 2 levels in AFP (Advanced Freefall Program), so I completed with 17 jumps, not including the 3 tandems that were required at the time (my DZ has not offered static line for some time, plus I had no interest in static line in the first place). AFP was a 15 jump program, now it is 18. Getting over the middle portion of the course was the hardest for me. Having said that, I had a B license until about jump 1100 or so, until the potential of doing video for the Nationals made me get the D. One buddy is going to beat me though. He has his A with about 1100 jumps now. One of the competitors that made elimination in the World free fly meet last month got to jump 1500 on his A license, I think. I have to echo other posts here: jumps are just a number. The more I jump, the more I know I will always be learning. | I don't drink during the day, so I don't know what it is about this airline.
