  3. http://www.helpwinthisbet.com/404/ good times. gotta love a challenge... ========================
  4. lol! pop rocks, as volatile as they are, are completely different because there is CO2 INSIDE the candy. pop rocks pop because that gas is trapped inside the candy, so as soon as the candy "shell" melts, the gas escapes and POW! you eyes roll back. the mentos acts as an oxidizer sorta and brings the CO2 from the soda out of solution. the mentos are also heavier so they will sink to the bottom of the 2-lt bottle and be completely submerged. so the reactions are different.
  5. okay, i'm thinking turtle is onto something here. you could wrap the mentos in something that would take slightly longer to dissolve than the time necessary to screw the cap back on. but it couldn't be something that would "cling" to the mentos. the reason it works is the sites of nucleation and clingy stuff on mentos would block these sites. i guess you could get elaborate and use a sealed magnetic device to enclose the mentos, then use an external magnet to pull the metal away bathing the mentos in the soda. trouble with that is now you have a hunk or two of metal inside a container which has the potential to, uh, expand quite rapidly. too, if it has the potential to explode, then whoever screws the cap back on better run like a m-fer. please place the video camera some distance away to record reactions...and make sure to zoom in.
  6. i don't think so. matter of fact, they recommend using diet soda because it doesn't contain sugar and is much easier to clean up the mess (for those that opt to do it in the house). if you do it in the house, for the love of god, please take video of this.
  7. okay, so i just saw this. take a bottle of soda and as fast as you can, drop in a pack or more of mentos. the trick is to rig up something that will allow all the mentos to fall into the 2 liter bottle as rapidly as possible (think tube with trap door). i'm sure this can be done on a smaller scale with a 20oz soda, but make sure the bottle is secured. do this outside. report back.
  8. i'm gonna have to agree with hex that maynard is sounding a bit different. not as much "mmmmm" like i love in aenima it's sounding a bit more angry in a not so calm and calculated sorta way. listening to vicarious now. there is definitely a mix of EVERYTHING tool in this - including huge sections that sound like the perfect circle side of maynard. the beginning sounds a crazy bit like pearl jam so it threw me off for a sec. i'm looking forward to hearing the album/cd/whatever-you-wanna-call-it in its entirety. bring it ON. edited to add some concert dates (from their website): Here are the dates for some smaller venue shows in the US and Canada before the band leaves for Europe: SUN-APR-30 INDIO, CA/ COACHELLA FESTIVAL TUE-MAY-02 SEATTLE/ PARAMOUNT THEATRE THU-MAY-04 OAKLAND/ PARAMOUNT THEATRE FRI-MAY-05 LAS VEGAS/ THE JOINT SAT-MAY-06 PHOENIX/ GAMMAGE HALL MON-MAY-08 DALLAS/ McFARLIN AUDITORIUM WED-MAY-10 DENVER/ TEMPLE BUELL THEATRE THU-MAY-11 KANSAS CITY/ MEMORIAL HALL FRI-MAY-12 MINNEAPOLIS/ ORPHEUM THEATRE SAT-MAY-13 CHICAGO/ AUDITORIUM THEATRE MON-MAY-15 DETROIT/ FOX THEATRE TUE-MAY-16 TORONTO/ HUMMINGBIRD THEATRE THU-MAY-17 PHILADELPHIA/ TOWER THEATRE FRI-MAY-19 NEW YORK/ CITY CENTER SAT-MAY-20 NEW YORK/ CITY CENTER SUN-MAY-21 BOSTON/ WANG CENTRE

  11. trip at the brain is about it for me. i was more into the metal/self-induced whiplash side of things. but thanks for that flash back!! it's been YEARS since i've heard reference to ST. nice. i'm thinking during that same time frame for me - janes, mega, cult, metallica, maiden, anthrax. wow.

  13. this is just f-ed up. i just wanted to put this out there because i had no idea that alot of cheap jewelry and stuff was loaded with lead. it definitely raises MY personal awareness level of it. the thought of this poor child dying because he swallowed a charm that came with a pair of sneakers is so very sad... ========================================== Boy Dies After Swallowing Lead-Filled Charm By Peggy Peck, Managing Editor, MedPage Today Reviewed by Rubeen K. Israni, M.D., Fellow, Renal-Electrolyte and Hypertension Division, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine March 31, 2006 Also covered by: Boston Globe, Fort Worth Star Telegram, MSNBC ----------------- MedPage Today Action Points Tell patients who ask that inexpensive metal jewelry may contain dangerously high levels of lead. ---------------------------- Review MINNEAPOLIS, March 31 - The lead-poisoning death of a four-year-old here from swallowing a commercial charm is a grim reminder that the toxic metal is in more than old paint. The little boy swallowed a heart-shaped charm, which testing confirmed consisted of 99.1% lead, according to Kathryn K. Berg, M.D., of the Hennepin County medical examiner's office, who reported details of the case in the March 31 issue of Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The finding was consistent with an earlier study from public health officials in Los Angeles who reported that 34% of the Los Angeles Country children younger than six who had lead poisoning had been exposed to lead in objects brought into the home. Furthermore, with the decline in lead hazards in U.S. households, ingestion of lead-containing items has become a common source of life threatening blood lead levels. The fatal charm here, which had "Reebok" engraved on it, was given away with a number of sneaker styles made by Reebok for preschool and grade-school children. The shoes, with names like Disco Queen, Emma Rhinestone and the Glimmer Deluxe, were sold nationwide beginning in May 2004. Reebok, which issued a recall on March 24 for the charms, estimated that 300,000 of them were in circulation. The four-year-old boy, Jarnell Therman Brown, died Feb. 22. The child, who had a history of microcephaly and delayed development, was brought to a hospital pediatric emergency department with a complaint of vomiting. Doctors there diagnosed probable viral gastroenteritis and administered Zofran (ondansetron) and sent home with instructions to parents to monitor fluid intake. He returned two days later with intractable vomiting, poor oral intake, sore "tummy" and listlessness. At that time he was dehydrated, with normal blood sodium but elevated blood urea nitrogen levels. He was admitted to the hospital and IV fluid replacement was initiated. The child's condition deteriorated, and 10 hours after admission he suffered respiratory arrest while being transported to the radiology department. He was resuscitated and placed on mechanical ventilation. Imaging studies included CT of his head and chest and radiographs of his abdomen. The CT revealed diffuse cerebral edema, which was treated with emergent ventriculostomy and decompressive craniotomy. The x-rays revealed a heart-shaped object that was initially mistaken for a radioplaque temperature probe. When additional review correctly identified the object as foreign object in his stomach, testing for heavy metals was requested. The following day a blood lead level of 180 μg/dL -- almost twice the life-threatening level of lead -- was reported. There was no evidence of blood flow to the brain, and the boy met criteria for clinical brain death. On the fourth day of hospitalization life support was removed. The child's mother, who didn't know he had swallowed the charm, said it came with a pair of shoes belonging to a child whose home her son had visited. Following the death, a staff member with the Minneapolis Department of Regulatory Services obtained two similar charms -- one with a pair of shoes purchase at a local shoe store and the second from a pair of shoes purchased from the Reebok website. The charm from the shoe store was 67% lead content by weight while the charm from the shoes purchased online tested at 0.07% by weight. In Atlanta, the CDC obtained four charms from shoes purchased at different outlets. When tested, the lead content of those charms ranged from 0.004% by weight to 0.044% by weight. The variation in lead content, according to the CDC, is "consistent with previous test results for small, inexpensive metallic jewelry." Because it is difficult to identify lead exposure risks based on case reports, the authors concluded that restriction or elimination of nonessential uses of lead in consumer products should be "part of a proactive strategy that prevents exposure to these products." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  15. hey guys, this is what i've found out so far regarding the logistics of donating blood "for credits." for blood to be "credited", FL blood center requires the following: * patient's full name * date of birth * the hospital the patient is in * name of the doctor ordering the blood * date of surgery (if applicable) it used to be that people could give blood and it's given directly to the hospital, blah blah. it became a logistical nightmare according to the FL blood center, so they stopped that particular process. long story short, it's not a direct credit in the sense of his mom being denied blood because credits aren't there. the patient of course will receive all the blood she needs, crediting is our way of replacing what she's used and fluffing the numbers for her in the likely event more blood is needed. if this doesn't make sense, PM me and i'll try to further explain what little bit i found out. i unfortunately did not find out about out-of-state donations, but i would suspect this question can be asked when you donate. worse case there isn't a way to do it and you still donate the gift of life. now the procedure is to give the aforementioned info, so whenever the patient's name comes up for billing or whatever, there will be information there showing that "x-number of units were donated in Jane Doe's name to replenish the supply that their units were drawn from." anyway, on that note, for folks local to deland, if there is enough interest, i'm gonna see about getting the bloodmobile to visit somewhere close by to make it convenient for everyone. not sure about the timetable or anything because i'm just tossing this idea around for now. currently, donations may be made at the following location: FL Bloodbank 1730 South Woodland Blvd Deland, FL the number there is 734-4447 hours are M-W-F.....9am-5pm, Tu - Th.....11am-7pm. i'll post more info about a local blood drive after i talk to the bloodmobile peeps. if any of you guys would be interested in a during the week donation in deland, PM me so i can sorta get a head count to give the bloodbank... hope this helps.... a

  18. a little FYI: our friend Krystal (who died last year in a plane crash along with piers, egon, and bruno) was working on this MRO at KSC. in memory of her, NASA placed her name on the nose cone of this when it launched last year. Krys was a local jumper here in deland. a bunch of us are keeping track of this as she makes the orbit insertion. it's pretty cool. fly on, krys! we knew you'd make it. miss you tons... edited to add a couple pics of the nose cone. the second pic shows krys' little sister jaime and her best friend danielle (who is also a skydiver and NASA employee). her parents are in the background...

    The Aristocrats!

    ahhhhhhh yes. glad to see this thread has resurfaced. when i watched this a couple months back, i laughed at this until i could hardly breathe. i think the beauty of this is not in the joke (which is why some people just don't get it) but in the story behind it and the sheer creative juices it takes to keep it going (yep, i said "juices"). this one definitely separates those that can handle it from the squeamish, that's for sure. even some of MY friends couldn't watch it....thought it was "...a bit much." i still think having a rural family would work out best, though. the possibility of them having a petting farm to incorporate would bring some nice layers to the act. goat piss, sheep shit, lanolin to help slide the dick with head and shoulders across the desk... ta-daaaaaaaaaaaa!
  22. just wanted to take the time to wish our dear friend Jari a very very happy birthday today. i hope you get everything you want for your birthday - and then double it. we love you sweetie! AAA, SRA, LBA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Kimchi

    there are two korean restaurants about 30 minutes from deland. both are located within .25 miles from each other in longwood (between deland and orlando). this is the perfect pitstop between the tunnel and the dz. it's really easy to get to: I-4 westbound to exit 94 (SR 434 Longwood) turn left (east). 1.5 and 1.7 miles on the left. Korea Garden is the first one. it's alright. korea house is the second and preferred one. mostly koreans in there eating everytime i go. that's always a good sign. :) keep in mind this one's closed on tuesdays. in tampa, the place used to be called Seoul House but i think they've changed their name. Oren and/or Laura will be able to confirm the name. this is located on south hillsborough a couple miles south of the tampa int'l airport (and maybe 4 miles from kim brothers grocery ;). also, there's a second one La told me about that i haven't tried in tampa yet. hope this helps! :) hey, we're ALWAYS looking for an excuse to go eat there, so if you're around and want a group outing, give us some notice and we'll try to scrounge up a trip. :) edited to add: and dave? that would be MISS redneck yuppy amerasian korean florida transplant to YOU. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
