  1. or cutaway from a perfectly good canopy......its been done.
  2. yeah its a good opinion though. What if there are folks above you? every jump is different, sometimes that can be an issue, other times it wont be. i like to make it part of my plan and let other jumpers on the load know so we can all plan accordingly. Also if i pull at 4, i would hope any other jumper in the area has already gone into a track and they are observing thier surroundings before they pull.
  3. +1 on that. I was jumpin one day, and when i landed (a nice stand up, as they all are) , another jumper (sub 200) came over and tried to tell me what i was doing wrong on my landing. Really a buzzkill after a nice jump. to the OP. giving advice to someone and having it pay off for them can be a rewarding feeeling.but you shouldnt be giving it to other skydivers with more jumps then you. You got to remember most skydivers have delicate egos. the best way to do this is go after your coach rating and help students.
  4. try going to www.howstuffworks.com and take thier skydiving quiz. it obviously wasnt made my one. On a side note, can someone thing of a new term for wuffo, its pretty weak.
  5. Pull higher. Im not sure why you landed off on that load. I exited after you and saw your canopy in the corn field as i was starting my base leg. it really is a good habit to pull abover 4k. most people like to suck it down to 3. Most of the time im last on the ground, i have plenty of space to fly my canopy and not be restricted in heavy traffic.
  6. What is it that makes it so much more challenging? That should be easy to explain. Sparky Well first off it is more dangerous, and when things are more dangerous it presents more of a challenge to make it safe. Its more dangerous because of the speed. Body positons has to be more finely tuned, one wrong move and you cork or into somebody can easily knocked someone out. It also take more time to learn to fly sit and head down, belly is just a very natural feeling. Heres a scenario, take 8 skydivers. 6 d-licensed and 2 new a license. For them to build an 8 way formation is not gonna be to difficult. For them to build an 8 way head down formation, thats not gonna happen.
  7. You have 75+ jumps, you haven’t gotten in too much but you already know it’s not much of a challenge. Maybe you could explain just what it is that makes VSD/free flying so much more challenging than belly flying. It there some magical thing you do to move your body around? The only thing I have ever noticed as being different is the jumper’s orientation to the relative wind. Sparky I have just about 3 hours of freefall time if you include tunnel just passed 100 jumps this weekend (ill wait for the sarcastic "oh 100 jumps, excuse me!!) this has been over the last 5 months. And as for a challenge, i havent found it to be to challenging, thats just me, it doesnt mean others dont. I credit this alot to the tunnel. Theres alot of things that make freeflying more challenging then belly, i didnt think that was even debatable.
  8. HAH! It may be easy to get good. Try winning! jon Or training Students! I think we found a candidate for the arrogant skydiver thread! who you refering to as the arrogant one? me or jon? as for training students, coach rating is in my near future, so ill be doin more rw over the winter to work towards that.
  9. cant tell you how many times i havent been let in on a jump. i didnt let it get to me, just kept jumping and having fun. the more i jump though, the less harder it is to find people to jump with me.
  10. Probably 75% of the jumpers at my dz jump RW. I havent gotten into it too much, doesnt offer up much of a challenge.
  11. Im going as a jehovahs witness, got my white button down with a black tie, a back pack, bicycle helmet, and bike. I usually dont dress up for halloween, but for $15 jumps, you bet i will.
  12. today on a skydive, i noticed the loop on my brake line was catching the squarish slider stops. I noticed it after i went for a turn and felt a "catch" type of resistance. Perhaps this is what happened in your situation.
  13. Its all about holding it and a continuous acceleration... and the AVERAGE speed for the whole jump. Its fun shit... but getting wonky at speed..... makes for some VERY interesting skydives Average speed!?!?! ha guess im not even close. Wellll you should work on that... its fun stuff reaching for that .5 Mach number

  15. i started head down on accident kinda. was doing a solo, and exited head down, and held it for a bit, started making adjustments and was able to make it work. I ease dropped in on a bunch of peoples giving other advice for head down, and applied it to myself...hope to get back up to the tunnel soon and work on it there. i should have my first head down video by the end of next weekend, if it ever gets sent out. ill post it up
  16. I did 281 on my 91st jump, neptune mounted outside my helmet. think i would like to go after this record.
  17. I had about an hour in the tunnel before i got my A-license. about 35 mins of it was sit training. So on my solo jumps for my a-license, i was already doing sit. The tunnel is a huge help. Truly, the sit is really easy. I often wonder how some people out there with over 500 jumps struggle with it? Around jump 80 i started doing head down. def seek advice before you try head down. I had a good coach session last weekend. Learned alot. Watching the video of it gave me new respect for how dangerous it can be. The speeds are serious.
  18. i did my first tandem right out of highschool. at the time i just wanted to do it once and check it off my list, ...6 years later, i saw the movie Avatar, and couldnt stop thinking about flying. I tried to recruit some buddies to do it with me, but no one was interested. So i signed up for AFF in may and being doing it everyweekend since. Best thing it the world.
  19. we had a jumper at my dropzone who did a freefly jump with a non-freefly friendly rig. he was head down and had a premature deployment. could have ended really bad, but he got lucky.
  20. so a student thought you couldnt reach your handle, and he pulled your pilot chute out, thinking he was helping you out? disregarding the seriousness of the situation, i think thats kinda funny.
  21. i had a step through like that, the twists were only in the risers. i decieded to stick with it and landed fine.
  22. 1987 Nats in Muskogee. I was using an old "wings wars" style RW suit to video 4-way team L.O.S.T. (Lack of Support Team) from Ft. Hood. I had rigged up some swoop cords using Dacron 550 line. After opening, I stripped the swoop cords and reached up for my toggles. Oops - the left and right swoop cords tied themselves together from the wind. It was like wearing handcuffs under canopy. I probably would have figured out a way to steer back to the DZ, but hacking it with my hook knife was easier and may have saved me from an embarrassing landing. If you don't carry a hook knife while skydiving, start today. After all, if you don't have a hook knife when you need one, you may never need one again. Can you elaborate on what swooping cord are? are they still used today?
  23. Title says it all. Id like to hear some story's of when you have used your hook knife. hopefully i learn something from one of your storys.
  24. i think my wings container is just as good as any other container. some people say its cheaply made, but they cant really back it up. I feel it is a well made container and is really comfortable. Maybe Wings wasnt on top of thier game years ago(just like in the 90's Hyndai was a cheap POS, but now they make reputable cars) All containers, being made present day, are all on par with each other. mostly its just the name that sets it apart. its amazing how much a logo can influence you. i mean the mirage logo sure as hell looks alot cooler then my wings.
