  1. The vast bulk of short sales are RV (relative value) trades, not outright or unhedged short sales. Example: you think Auto Company A is the worst in its sector and will underperform it’s contemporaries such as Company B or C, however you don’t have conviction whether the whole market/sector is going up/down and you don’t want outright market risk – so you sell (short) Company A and buy and equal amount of B or C. If these shorted stocks are available and liquidly traded they are termed GC (General Collateral) and you pay a borrow cost of about 25 basis points (a quarter of one percent). The groups usually making money out stock lending are pensions and insurance companies with large static stock holdings – it’s a money spinner for them. Also, note that the risk to a short seller is unlimited, so it can be very risky. A stock can only go down to zero, but can go up infinitely. If the market is aware of big short positions, these guys can get taken out in what’s called a sort squeeze. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"

  3. That's no fun. I had bookmarked the page to wait for the actual photographer to add a comment thanking the former posters for their compliments and asking what the prize would be of he won. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  4. Attached is a copy of the photo from the site. He even put his own name as copyright on it. WTF "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"

    Website hosting

It’s easy and inexpensive to do it yourself; you don’t need a single company to provide everything in a “package”. You need: - register a domain name (about $10) - buy FTP software (example such as CuteFTP www.cuteftp.com) - design your own site using anything from Microsoft Publisher (part of MS Office, which most people already have) to more elaborate programmes such as Adobe Dreamweaver. There are tons of free templates available - pay for webhosting package and FTP your site files up when done (there are thousands of basic webhosting companies to choose from) You don’t need any html coding skills, it’s actually quite easy "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"

  7. The dream of anyone who has ever had a job as a waiter/waitress... I had a side job as a waiter in university. On one of my last shifts, 5 days before graduating and moving 1000 miles away to start my career, I have a table of six businessmen (I use the term loosely as this was a near Michelin star quality restaurant and this group weren’t exactly like the typical clientele). After some exemplary service, the guy leaves me a sub 5% tip on a large bill. I’m incensed and run up to meet him before he leaves out the front door. I catch up to him and ask “Sir, was there any problem with the service?” He replies “no” and turns his back to me to walk out. As he’s stepping out the door, I grab him by the arm and yank him back in and then get inches from his face and say much louder “I SAID WAS THERE ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE SERVICE?” He’s initially stunned – a 22 year old kid has grabbed him (a late middle-age man) and yelled at him like an unruly child in front of his five business colleagues. He comes to his senses and then shouts to me “go get me the manager; I want to speak to the manager. I’m shaking with adrenaline as I really wanted to punch him, but don’t want to start my career with an assault charge. Without taking my eyes off him, I calmly sit down in a chair behind me, cross my arms and say “Fuck you; go get the manager yourself”. Not gentlemanly actions, but it still makes me smile to remember the incident. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  8. I usually stay here which has been pretty good: http://www.magnusonhotels.com/Magnuson-Hotel-Zephyrhills/ "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  9. 4 Days. DZ had a 2 jump per day max limit for AFF students (which I think is a good idea) "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  10. Reading through a few recent threads related to logbooks, a few have asked about backing up. Attached is draft spreadsheet that (in addition to your physical logbook) can serve as both a backup and tool to have detailed info on your jump history and equipment. This is a blank copy from my personal jump log sheet which I slimmed down. I entered 20 sample jumps, to show how it works. Enter your jump info on the “Jumps” sheet and the “Breakdown” sheet will update automatically. In general, green shaded cells are for entering information. Edit and customise the entries/formulas to suit your needs. Blues. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  11. This is pretty cool; can I borrow a Canadian passport? http://www.outsideonline.com/news-from-the-field/Canadians-Get-Free-Beer-in-Sochi.html "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  12. Whatever system you decide on to keep organised; add a checklist. We use specialist gear and often find ourselves at DZs in the middle of nowhere. You will eventually forget something important without a checklist. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  13. Not everyone’s home DZ is large or has a well stocked shop. He’s asked a query on feedback on two very simple items (open face helmet and mechanical altimeter) which, along with goggles are three pieces of kit every skydiver should own. The internet is a place you can get feedback from a large number of persons (and then make up your own mind). If he was asking about hairstyles, some may have proffered that a “mullet cut” looks stylish; however there would probably be other posters that strongly disagreed. ...to the OP, agree with above replies to go with Altimaster Galaxy in glow face "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  14. From a helicopter pilots perspective, that video shows even more impressive piloting skills. Aside from the ship bobbing about, you have changing and asymmetric ground effect (the “cushion” effect a helicopter has when within 1 blade diameter of the surface), it’s probably also going in/out of translational lift (at about 18kts a heli flies more efficiently and you immediately need more/less power when going through ETL) and he’s also getting intermittent “curl under” from being downwind of the bridge structure which is also playing with his lift (same as when we land parachute behind and downwind of a large hanger on windy day. ...Impressive flying indeed. 16. Freeflyers stretching and tucking the bottom of a long-sleeve t-shirt under their leg straps. Makes them look like a dork and takes them a good 10minutes to get it all tucked away. Why not just tuck your shirt into your trousers? Also I'm with the OP on dorks pimping about w/ FF Helmets like hats. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  17. Agreed. This was a senseless death over nothing – an argument over texting in a theatre?? What is wrong with a fight? This conceal-carry pussy mentality of I’ll handle any problem by “popping a cap in their ass” is cowardice. If the clock could be rolled back and the end result was a broken nose, jaw, arm or leg, than this would be funny to most of us (even if not admitting it). However, here we have a wife and small child with no father – I hope this idiot is put away for the remainder of his life (I don’t believe police are that popular in prison, so the noted sentence is probably kind of arbitrary). Some single actions can be so prominent that they define your life. Killing someone over a popcorn incident really makes his prior years of “he was a community man” drivel a moot point. 18. The ones that are now really German underneath work much better - BMW have sorted Rolls Royce & Mini. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  19. 64% if we narrow it to "white evangelicals" To be fair though, we are noting stats on population that have strong/leading numbers in believing to have been abducted by aliens or belief in Bigfoot/Sasquatch. I'm a little hazy on my bible stories, did Noah have a pair of Sasquatches on the Ark? "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"

    It was so cold...

For a quick approximation for Celsius to Fahrenheit, double the number and add 30 (it comes surprisingly close) "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  21. Hulu is not available for Europe, but I'll do a trial of unblock-us to see how it works. Thanks "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  22. Anyone have a good method or proxy servers to watch Saturday Night Live episodes in Europe? I’m a bit a closet tech geek, but have never been able to find a proxy/method to get SNL in the UK. We haven’t been able to get SNL on satellite/cable for over a decade now. Oddly however (and to rub salt in the wound) we are bombarded with episodes of Honey Boo Boo, Duck Dynasty and Myrtle Manor. WTF ??? "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  23. My 700D closes quite tight; couldn't imagine it opening from any normal skydiving. Tolerances on different batches may vary, but I don't believe mine would open even with a strong kick. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  24. Yes, agree with VerticalFlyer; I was just giving some insight into the equipment. If interested in 30K jumps, Tad Smith runs them at Skydance in California. Very safe/professional setup for doing civilian HALO jumps. I'd suggest that you leave the wingsuit out for your first HALO (keeping with the safety rule of not introducing to many new variables at once). Additional note for 30K jumps is that you'll need a FAA Class III medical and attend a hypobaric training day session. "Pain is the best instructor, but no one wants to attend his classes"
  25. HALO/HAHO bailout systems vary, but no matter which you choose, it will be more expensive than you probably expect. I’ve used: Mask: MBU-20/P or Gentex MBU-12/P BailOut: ASFS Dual-Cylinder Regulator: Airox VIII Doesn’t sound like much kit, but is roughly $8000 if you wish to kit yourself out. Of course you’ll need a helmet with the bayonet attachment points (something like a Gentex HGU-55/p). Re the bail-out bottles, this can vary with your personal height, proportions, wingsuit type and bottle type used (I wore mine inside suit attached to my left leg), however if you’re shorter than about 6ft or have shorter length thighs; this may not work. One note on the masks is that some people have had the exhaust valves of the MBU-12’s freeze shut; the MBU-20’s are less prone to this.
