  1. Until you mentioned '...still paying for power...' I was going to ask why you were concerned with conserving your own energy. I know it's a good principle to follow no matter what input source you use - but it's not like you are consuming anyone else's sun I still have the ol' 7 watt bulbs and my contribution is to use them less. As a power consumer, despite living in the land of cheap hydro ($0.058 /kwh + tax) a bunch o' bulbs burns a bunch of power. I think I'll look at the newfangled LED-thingies. Dad the Tire Changer (and poor Ralphie). The bumpkiss's dogs and... best of all ... the Chinese Food scene. 3. Nice post! Nice advice! Not much freeflying of any kind goes on at Gimli but I aim to progress... 9500 ft at a time. My sit is quite "decent" already but the diagrams put a few things into very clear focus. The fallrate out the door part is very interesting to me. Thanks Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)

  5. Heya Diego! I jump (occasionally) with MP3 and earbud headphones under my open-face ski-syle helmet. If you already have the gear and are going to do a clear and pull, "inflight entertainment" is quite enjoyable. Besides the ever-present 'check with yourt DZSO' comment, I'd also suggest that inflight music can be distracting and at low jump numbers it might not be the best idea to be distracted in the patern. Hell, it's not a great idea with high jump numbers either. Make an informed decision. That which you hear through earbuds will at high volume will NOT be "hi-fi" by any means. If you're stuck in Cessna land with 20 minute climb times, rock out (or chill out, whatever) during the climb. You WILL notice how much higher than normal you need to turn the phones up - this lends credence to those veterans who tell me that you CAN damage your hearing in a Cessna over the long term! My DZO brings a book onboard and reads a chapter or so when he jumps. Geez, to be able to read Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  6. ...not anymore. New digs + no outside internet = no dropzone.com for 8 hours a day. Oh well, I thing I can adapt but the withdrawal might be painful

    Class Act

Rick rick, As you have been ever so kind in your words to one of my fellow Gimli jumpers, may I offer you a sincere thanksgiving retort? What makes "the rest of the world" a place for American politics? Why is it alright for "you" to voice opinions on the politics of other countries when you appear to grant the citizens of other free and democratic countries no such right? Happy Thanksgiving! Think about it. Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  8. Day 1. Damn, self employment was good! I guess it still is as I haven't yet sold my very modest investment practise. It's just that, as of today, for 'regular office hours' my body is contracted to a large grocery retailer as an accountant. Beer. I've been self-employed in the investment industry since I completed University in 1991. Not since my university bank job have I worked to a normal schedule since - hence the cyberbeer. And now, in a vain attempt to pay my regular bills andskydive I will do both. Oh, yes, and I will also be continuing my CGA (CPA) evening courses. Hmmmmm.... Did I mention that I have no link to the outside world during business hours? So much for mid-morning philosophiparachutical discussions . The good news is that summertime has only small demands both on school and the investment practice. This means more jumping
  9. heya Frodo: While I'm not the hardcore rockhopper type it sounds like you might not be either. I ride an old Marin Lite with neon green forks that would match AggieDave's skyride - even guys I ride with who are into the 'spensive shiite marvel at "how good" the Old School Ride feels - for a while. Suspension costs weight, $'s, and control. No, you can't pound down a mountain trail on a hardtail - but if you're not gonna do it then why bother with the equipment. Dad's Specialized with Rockshox up front is less pounding on the wrists but it feels all weird and mushy to me - kinda like going back to a Manta. I sorta feel seasick on a full suspension bike on the flats -our natural prairie terrain. Before you decide on a 'cheap' full suspension bike, why not go and look at higher end rigid frame models - or even components for your current model. You might find that the tradeoff of heavy weight + more (read: cheaper quality) components is larger than you thought. A light bike will be easier to handle on the trails and can be almost as fast as a road bike with the right tires. Try some out even if you don't seriously intend to buy them. Think ...canopy demo...
  10. O, to be a Badger! Raving about the plane, until the Snake But alas, t'wont be me. Rule One conspires to thwart my Badger-ness for this year, at least. Perhpas #3? standby-cyber-understudy? Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  11. ...here's another twist for ya... Let yer fingers work some magic and open up a cavity between the skin and the breast. Insert crushed garlic cloves and rosemary, and a bit of butter or some chopped up bacon pieces - maybe the 2nd best breast you'll have Breast down works to keep it juicy but then the problem is getting the crispy skin. In the oven it's a flip abou 1/2 hour before it's done. On the 'Q?... no problem. So I take it that Thursday is not a big jumping day? It's just a workday here... 13. Eee-yup.... I had a toggle hangup - once - following someone's well intentioned advice to 'feed the excess through the riser at the Slinks'. Never again. PD has put up a first quality document on how to avoid the problem with 1/2 a rubber band - or by using your 'standard equipment'. The more people that read this document, the less will become the problem of impaired control systems. I have to admit, all the failure modes look kinda goofy to me - in hindsight on one of them . RTFPDF!!! ***I presume this is a public service announcement from Performance Designs "PDZone" - well done! More great customer service above and beyond *** Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  14. Our only resident freeflyer is 72! Pat was a parachute rigger in the newly constructed hangar @2 at Gimli in 1951 - now home, in part, to our DZ. Never one to conform, or so he says, Pat has avioded all this "RW" stuff and and can be seen in bicycle shorts and a sit suit top in all but sub-zero weather. No, he doesn't bang our 10 jumps a weekend. He only flies his stiletto on 'nice' days (otherwise it's a big pillow of a PD - 260 I think, with smoke on holiday weekends). Damn I hope to be as active and alive as he is when I get to be that age! Dunno if Pat's numbers are that low given his early jumps in the 50's were military but you're quite right about the stories that can be told! 15. I'm no machinist but I understood that! I keep my fine lathe bastard on the peg next to my reamer and my inside calipers . I do, really. My suction pump is kept separately in a drawer with the lubricants. So THIS is "talking shop" ? Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  16. Well, there's THIS thread which I posted in September. It was not a 'demo' but the problem was the same. IIRC, "a" general comment is 'don't cutaway till your feet get wet'. Now, to cutaway or not is another question - obviously you can't chop a reserve. But in pounding surf that might be dragging my canopy this way and that (ever tried swimming in your clothes?) I'd be inclined to chop the main. *** I don't want to get into what some 'unknown-to-me' people were doing having a freefly dive without ultra precise spotting over the ocean.... " b-b-b-butttt the green light was on " as a response by my group's spotter would NOT make me happy if I was the one floundering two football fields out because of it. I'm glad wet gear was the only issue in this case. I remember a year or two ago we lost a parachuting stuntman to the Pacific Ocen filming a movie (can't recall the name) right now. 17. Gotta wonder if Andy' forgotten how to Student ARCH! - or was he intentionally looking for a head-down dive??? I'm sure there was more than one or two nutcases at Flugtag but I'm sure when it got to discussing designs...."well, ya, actually this is the "dry" run. Next weekend we're takin' it to 15grand!!"

  20. How 'bout a leading question like " you know I'm evantually gonna jump. would you rather have the chance to be there or just get to see the video someday". Be there ... best tell them. Video only? The big issue is past. I showed up at the family cottage after my FJC with the wide ass-est shit eating grin you could imagine. I also had a welt acrtoss my forehead from where I'd run into the back of the mockup (yes, I was that hyper that day). "What did you do to your forehead Dave?", Mom asks... "Skydiving accident", I reply. [looks of shock and horror] "You did what"? ... and on it went. Me, blithering at related Whuffos. They, listening intently to my stories of bliss and freedom. They were never keen on my sports car racing career but this was something else again. They were happy that I'd found something I liked so much, but a bit concerned until I was finished training. I don't even know if I ever showed them the video. My first (and only, so far) cutaway was another great moment in parent/kid relationships. Opening weekend of full season #1 , jump #20. It was only a couple of weekends later that they showed up on DZ for the first time. They arrived to see two soaking wet, muddy, white faced skydivers - it was the result of our first tandem mal in DZ history. They haven't been back but have no undue fear of the sport anymore. They're still glad I'm not sportscar racing anymore and even more glad that I've not ever spoken of buying another motorcycle (shhhhhhh.....) You'll be fine. Let them decide for themselves. 21. What car? What exhaust system? (nosiy = get a bigger amp and fegattaboudit) I run an Alpine and Cerwin stuff in my Civic Si - the front stage predates my ownership of the car (as well as the 'rice boyz stereo styling' school so prevalent today ) If you have room for a sub, all you need to do is NOT send anything below about 80 Hz to your fronts. Then, deck power (as long as it's GOOD deck power) is fine. Crossover capability is NB -whether you do it in a higher end head unit (a la Alpine) or via a feed into a crossover just depends on your space and patience for fiddling. Audio is much like photography - some can get beautiful results out of a Pentax K-1000 and 2 lenses and some need $10k worth of automatic crap to do it for them. PM me for some lower dollar ideas - save a few jump tix. It is most often not, I repeat NOT, about the 'wattage' or 'frequency response' ... marketing people can make spec sheets look good to 90% of all people. Be among the 10% who understnads and appreciates good sound, not just good marketing! For Jazz and classical: MB quart, Infinity Kappa, Bostons. For Rock: Cerwins(a bit harsh) or JBL. All around: decent grade Alpines. Remember the sub and the equalizer will make or break the image. Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  22. Thanks for posting, Murray. While I am a few hundred jumps away from being in the position to spread my wings it wasa great treat to see a local Cessna exit. Since freefly from 9k would be an awfully short ride, and nobody here in Winnipeg is interested in CReW I'm having trouble plotting my future in the sport (given I'm not soo hyper-keen on RW as yet). BASE, while appealing on a certain level, also means a lot of travel - and I'm fond of MORE airtime rather than less. Birdman sounds like a logical progression. I'll be watcing...and waiting to join your flock. HAHO jumps from Moose Jaw and Saskatoon and I'll meet ya at Davidson?
  23. They gave the DOGS regualr alcoholic ber and they;re giving the humans non-alc? I can't wait to hear what the SPCA will have to say to THAT one! [flashback] in the very late 60's- I was around but don't remember it - may parents and their neighbors would get together for New Years celebrations involving champagne (well Duhhh). Said neighbors had a Siamese cat (named George). Apparently one celebration they decided George should share in the fun - but he wouldn't drink the champagne from his bowl. Crumbled coctail shrimps to the rescue ... a trail to, and then a few in, the bowl...Voila!! Now, Siamese cats are not the most docile creatures even when they're NOT drunk but appaently the effect was terriifying. Bouncing off the walls for about 10 minutes, George then crashed hard and slept for the rest of the night. [/flashback] And these people are contributing to the delinquency of Dogs in this day and age? Sounds like alcohol abuse to me Dave Life is very short and there's no time for fussing and fighting my friend (Lennon/McCartney)
  24. No no no no NO! Half the fun is finding this stuff over and over again in differnet ways. It's often not until the 3rd or 4th time it's been posted in different threads on the same day that it gets tiring. THAT is when drag out the light sabre (or is that Light Sabre 2? ) Even better is the fact that I have whuffo friends (...really, I still do, y'know) who sometimes send me the stuff we've been laughing over for weeks and all I can do is smile politely -- then I send them some of the REALLY obscure stuff we get like THIS or THIS or
