I am sure free climbing would be an easier option, and i bet most do it to a degree. Climbing a tower is already very tiring and a pain in the ass. Most people never climb ladders bigger than 20 ft. Climbing towers is a real workout. If you have some sort of fall protection its even more of a pain in the ass because you have to stop every 3-10 ft to make changes to the harness depending on the type of safety gear being used. Maybe my post was a bit to aggressive, i meant it to be amusing and lighten the mood while getting the thread back on track. At any rate, as i mentioned before I thought it was a neat trick. I didnt interpret the story to mean that the guy actually thought the strips helped him breath, but i interpreted it to work as reminder, as well as a way to get him to relax. Not only do you have the absurdness of it helping someone relax, but having that strong minty residue in their mouth might have been the reminder they needed to breath. As dumb as that sounds, it happens. I was a competitive swimmer in high school so every now and then i find myself holding my breath when i am concentrating. When i starting learning to freefly my coach starting taking big gulps of air once on a dive. I couldnt figure out what he was doing until i realized i was holding my breath and as soon as i took a big breath i relaxed and everything clicked. I had another instructor give me a cool trick to use with a student who needed to relax. I had a student that knew what they were doing, and had the skills, but got real anxious about wanting to do the dive absolutely perfect. Because of this they were very tense in freefall. The instructor told me to have to student close in on me after exit, and stick their tongue out at me and geek the camera, then we would continue with the dive. It worked really well as the student wasnt expecting me to be making faces back at them and their body position was much more relaxed and improved. As a coach and wannabe instructor i frequent this forum often looking for tips just like this one so that I may learn from others experience. It could have been a cool thread where other instructors chime in on different innovative tricks and trips they have learned though the years. It could be a number of things, some jump related and some not. As someone mentioned it could be riser slap, or since you keep saying how cold it was it could be wind burn, or it could be something unrelated like allergies or swelling of the Parotid Glands. It's obviously just a difference in opinion. My eye surgeon straight up told me I was NOT a candidate for LASIK because of my base jumping and skydiving. I opted for LASEK, which despite the similar acronym to LASIK is actually completely different from LASIK and more of a variation of PRK. I am glad I opted for the LASEK. I dont have to worry about any additiona surgeries, no night blindness issues (in fact it fixed existing ones), and its just more peace of mind. If i had to do it all over again...i prob would have gone with PRK. Only because it is proven and it really is the best in terms of results. All these new surgeries arent any better for your vision, they are just more comfortable with less healing time. A downplane situation is when you have two canopies out, but they are both diving/flying towards the ground. This is the only situation students are taught to cutaway below 1000 feet. Just because you cant land it doesnt mean your only option is to cut away. As someone already suggested a canopy transfer would be an option as well as an intentional two out. Remember, this thread was started by someone with very low jump numbers who started spiraling at 1200ft, which would put them under 1000ft in less than a few seconds and we teach students never to cutaway below 1000 except in a downplane situation. not necessarily, some dropzones set up the toggles so students won't be able to stall the canopy You missed the point. The way DZs do this is by lengthening the brake lines. If the toggles were stuck to the point that a full flare didnt clear them, then you are essentially not flaring with the toggles, but flaring with rear risers since that is what you are pulling on. If you pull rear risers down to your chest or further you will stall the canopy regardless of toggle length.
