Something like that... the blue wavelengths (as well as violet and ultraviolet) are able to refrace through the atmosphere) whereas the other wavelengths are reflected... (kind of like a prism...) near the earth's poles where it atmosphere is thinner and due to ionization effects some of the other wavelengths make it through the atmosphere... and viola we have the aurora borealis... at least I think that's about right...
