  1. OK, I've not been jumping as long as some in this thread, but probably started before some were born! Looking forward to 3 1/2 years from now when I can get on SOS loads. Skydiving is the best thing that ever happened to me. Definitely worth any of the risks! Blue Skies! Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."

  4. Janna is spelled with 2 "n's." Don't you know your wife's team mates' names? Remember, Lorena Bobbitt was an amateur surgeon. Actually, I'll take the blame for the design of the dive. Wasn't sure who we would have with us, so relied on the K.I.S.S. principle. Blue Skies! Harry P.S. - at L.P., we found out tits can cause hypoxia. Ask 'Chel. 5. It's gopt a nomally aspirated piston engine. On a hot day won't make it above 10 grand at gross weight. A turbine version would be great. Talked to the rep at Oshkosh, they may consider hanging an Allison up front instead of a PT-6. Blue Skies! Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  6. Lori- Thanks for the reminder. It's soon getting time to organize the formaition loads early, so we can be through by 1:00 p.m.! Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  7. Perris is a good place to try--what other DZ has a the county morgue right off the end of the runway? BSBD. Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  8. Patty Wilson was known as "Purple Patty" when I moved to So. Cal in 1973! I don't know if there were any other purple ParaCommanders back then! Blue Skies! Harry L "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  9. Remember when all it had was a dirt floor? Someone spilled the beer and Steve Mack didn't wwant it to go to waste and got down and tried to lick it up. Those were the days! Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  10. Jeanni-- You've got that right! Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  11. I was at Perris when this whuffo comes up to me and asks "Why are there all those flags (wind indicators) all around the DZ? ' So I say "Well, you know how sometimes next to the highway you see the crosses with the flowers on them? " "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  12. Started Jumping 1969. Private Pilot 1978. Now full time CFI, part time 135 pilot. Flew jump planes fo a couple of seasons at Hemet and Elsinore. Now don't like to land in airplanes on weekends. "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  13. A number of drop zones have Victor airways (8 miles wide) going over them. That information is available to jumpers and pilots on all the charts. The fact that there is an airway should let the jumpers know there may be pilots more focused on their navigation instruments than looking out for jumpers. If we get into a "shoving match" remember that there are more pilots than jumpers, so guess who's going to win. We ALL have to look out for other traffic, whatever kind it is. Blue Skies! Harry Leicher P.S. Question with which I start out my FAA seminar..."Is there anyone here who flies a C-210 with red trim and small numbers? You probably didn't see me when I went by you at 7,500 over Perris a couple of years ago." "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  14. TRAVEL - (Yes, I know that's shouting) One of the greatest things about skydiving is meeting people all over the world. I wouldn't want to jump at a DZ that says "If you jump anywhere else, you're not welcome here anymore." I go back and forth between Elsinore and Perris regularly. When Perris was run by a club in the mid 80's, I was the treasurer of the club, but also piloted the jump planes at Elsinore! You might feel more comfortable if you plan a "road trip" with one or two other jumpers, so you won't be alone. Contacts through DZ.com are also a great idea! Have fun! Blue Skies! Harry Leicher "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  15. When you get back in the air, just remember that there may be an unconcious effort to favor the injured ankle. That means you may be more likely to injure the other one! Wait until there are steady winds for your first couple of jumps, and be ready for the PLF. Better to get the rig dirty than to get jurt again. Blue Skies from someone who's been there a few times. Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."

  19. Grow up? Have any of us? Your first jump course cost $29.95. A 30 second delay was $4.00. You felt you were being ripped off paying $5.00 for a reserve repack (every 60 days!) Purple Hazy Skies! Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  20. Bill- It's simple- My truck's paid for. When the monthly cost of gas I use becomes close to the monthly car payment and additional insurance premium on a new car, I'll get a car that burns less gas. Most people are the same way. The "market place" will take care of this. If the people really want to move this along, they'll vote for legislators who propose tax breaks on the fuel efficient cars and raise the tax on gasoline. If the program is calculated to be revenue neutral, it's not a tax increase. Of course "big oil" wouldn't go for this, and considering where the family that's in the White HOuse got most of its money, I'm not going to hold my breath and wait for the proposal. Brown Skies! Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  21. I'm saddened that this has turned into a somewhat mean spirited thread. For those newcomers to the sport, any levity may seem disrespectful, when it fact it is often a defensive mechanism to help the survivors get through the loss. As someone who has been in the sport for a long time, I think I have a perspective that many of the newer jumpers have yet to develop. Many of the posters to this forum were not around in the days before reliable AAD’s, square canopies, GPS, or other devices that have made this sport a lot safer. When you're still young (under 30) you may not have been to a lot of funerals. I've got a group photo that was taken in 1980 at the 20th anniversary of the original Taft, CA, DZ. About 200 jumpers standing in front of a DC-3, a Cessna, and a Twin Beech. At least 20 of the people in that photo, and at least one of the planes, are no longer with us, for various reason...auto accidents, Drug OD's, cancer, heart attacks, plane crashes, and of course skydiving accidents. No matter what the cause of the death, the loss of a family member hurts. As you go to more and more funerals, it usually gets easier accept the fact that death is a part of living. It's appropriate to mourn the loss of a loved one, no matter what the cause of the death. Wouldn't setting a remembrance day for only those who have died in a skydiving accident be disrespectful of those who have died as a result of another kind of accident, or disease? Although the Mexicans do have a “Day of the Dead” to remember ALL their departed ancestors, very few families in this country have a similar tradition. My opinion is that the best way to remember those who have died skydiving would be to have a moment of silence at the beginning of every Safety Day to remember “those who might still be here, if they had learned what we are about to learn today.” After the seminar, go out and show respect by not getting hurt! For now, the best thing to do is chill, and down a cool one to the memories of those we’ve lost. Blue Skies! Harry Leicher "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  22. I still have the first canopy I ever owned, a Switlick 7-TU. Date of Manufacture 02/58. Yes, I'm ancient. My wife is older than my first parachute-- but not by much! Blue Skies! Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  23. next line: "Scum of the Earth" Anyone care to add another line? Blue Skies! Black crotchless underwear! Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  24. Nick- Good for you- I've been doing some seminars in the LGB & LAX FSDO's areas. Get some surprised looks from the pilots when they find out what the operations at Perris & Elsinore are about. I hand out NTSB reports about skydivers vs. planes. It gets their attention when the find out the best they're going to hope for is a tie! Try NTSB report BFO94FA015. Blue Skies! Red Canopies!
