  1. I remember the next morning thinking there were 15,999 members of USPA thinking "Why didn't I think of that?" and one member counting "20, 40, 60, 80 100....." BSBD "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  2. I took the photo of the Cessna prop sticking out the other side of 817. Here's the FAA version: http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20001214X39986&key=1 Here's the FAA version of Jim Spencer's? video of the 57U event http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=20001214X36487&key=1 And yes, I dearly remember PVSS. I was the treasurer. We kept skydiving going until the Conatser's figured out a way to manage their risk. Blue Skies! "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." 3. If it's not throwing oil, it's out of oil and the engine is about to seize!!! If the preflight requires an umbrella, there's an oil leak. If there's no oil dripping, it's out of oil. The proudest time in my flight log is my SIC in 6MA. Blue Skies! Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  4. These days, not only do you not have to know how to spot, but you don't have to know how to pack, or ever find your reserve handle!!! Back in the old days, once you let go of the plane you wre DEAD unless YOU did something about it!! It was an attitude of self reliance. It seems that attitude is disappearing throughout our society today. Blame someone else for your problem. Sad. BSBD Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  5. The only thing you could have added was "Any heir or beneficiary of my estate who takes any action against any skydiving related entity as a result of my death shall not receive ANYTHING from my estate." Or something like that. As to using the unlicensed pilot, unairworthy airplane, etc, if that can be proven the local district attorney may likely make life miserable for the criminal. BSBD You pays your money, you takes your chances! "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  6. Tom- You are to be commended on the effort you are putting into this. As you've pointed out, we have to remember that having the info available on GPS units won't ELIMINATE the problem of skydivers and airplanes trying to be in the same place at the same time. It can only REDUCE the potential. I've found that even if the info is available, most pilots haven't a clue as to what to do about the parachute symbol along their route. They have no idea of the altitudes from which the jumps are made, the frequency of jumps, etc. I've seen many CFI's approve student solo flights right over the Elsinore symbol, telling the students simply to be sure to get flight following from ATC. Sometimes ATC is too busy. On the other hand, I've had ATC vector me right over Perris and Elsinore. I know enough to ask if any of the planes are up, but most pilots wouldn't know to do that. The GPS project is only one facet of a multi faceted task, that includes constant vigilence by jumpers and jumps pilots, as well as efforts to educate the pilot population of the potential hazards. I advise pilots to check out http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief2.asp?ev_id=20001211X13693&ntsbno=BFO94FA015&akey=1 Thanks again for your efforts. 7. I landed in it a couple of times today. It's VERY well plowed and VERY soft. Dusty and dirty, yes, but it's easy to wash dust out of the jumpsuit. I agree it's not great for your lines. Soft landings. Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  8. It could be just as bad just flaring from a regular approach. BSBD "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  9. While it's possible to turn an ankle in those clods, I've usually found them to be more like big pea gravel. The clods also break up with an impact, which is what you want if you're in doubt as to how your landing will be. I'd rather clean some dust out of my teath than grass off the end of the femur sticking though the skin and jumpsuit. As I tell my flight students, an emergency landing area is one which will allow gradual, if not necessarily pretty, deceleration. "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  10. I'll bet he was glad it didn't come loose in the flare. Ask Andy Rowan about those events. Was he headed for the grass or soft, plowed up dirt area? "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  11. It's more like a "lost art." There are still some around who know it. I do a fair bit of 4-way and 8-way, and even launching the base "chunk" for some big-ways, but I still really enjoy going out late and diving. Blue Skies! Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  12. Sometimes the working girls are less expensive, when you figure in the costs of child support, divorce lawyers, etc. Or so I've been told. BSBD Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  13. REMEMBER THAT. Yes, I was shouting. Having a canopy collision because you were going for the "main" landing area when there are acres of flat land all around is stupid. "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  14. Back in the late 70's at Perris, they would often have 60 static liners in the FJC. Since the winds came up every afternoon during the summer, the FJC had to wait until about an hour before sunset. They would send up the DC-3, and make three passes with 10 on each pass, and then come down, pick up the rest, and do it again. The "Up Jumpers" were through for the day, so we would all hang out by the Bomb Shelter and put "Another One Bites the Dust" on the jukebox. Out of the 60 static-liners, at least one would get injured enough for the ambulance, which came over from Sun City about an hour before sunset so they would be ready. Rarely did they go home empty. 18. QuoteI thought it was before 69 but I guess not? Quote When I made my first jump 10/69, it was already USPA. Blue Skies! Harry Leicher USPA #966 "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."
  19. Or possibly, would you rather be alive to be on your friend's ash dive, or getting your ashes scattered in freefall along with your friend's ashes? There are so many variables, including wing loading, ground conditions, winds, etc. to guaranty the results either way. BSBD Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? 20. QuoteWho do you think can pack more reliably, a person with 100 pack jobs or someone with 1000's.Quote That's why I pack for myself unless I really know the packer!!!! Great openings Sunday! 21. I feel privileged to have known and jumped with many of the pioneers. The ones who are still jumpng may not be the hottest 4-way competitors, or have anything to do with swooping. However, they do deserve our respect and admiration for what they started. BSBD Harry "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." 22. "dead-set" almost turned into a bad choice of words. "Very inclined" might be a better choice. The answer to that was very likely yes. It might be constructive if they both decided to post their versions of what happened here. "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." 23. We've had this discussion before..."Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Hardly anyone else did." Your second sentence answered your question! At a crowded DZ, my main goal is to land as far away from other canopies as I can! No matter how hard you try, you will have a blind spot. The other jumpers will have a blind spot. Unless it's absolutely necessary to land in a crowded area, why do it? Strictly enforced patterns can reduce the chance of a problem, but if a jumper feels like he's being forced into a bad situation, he may do something to get out of it. If that upsets the pattern.... When we demos into tight areas, we usually brief landing patterns and outs. We don't always do that on "routine" loads at the DZ and complacency sets in. It takes two to have a collision. If you land in a less crowded area, you reduce the chances. Is keeping dirt off your gear worth the possible price? That's your decision to make!!!! "Harry, why did you land all the way out there? Nobody else landed out there." "Your statement answered your question."

  25. Hard to believe that it's been 22 years since I earned NSCSA 80. It was about the 5th attempt of the night. We took it a "little" low. What great memories!!! Blue Skies!
