  1. Kevin Vetter did the same thing on a CRW jump and was "Skydiver of the Year" in Skydiving magazine. Mid 1990's.
  2. About two million safe jumps, with no injuries occur every year in the US. Let's discuss that first, and then break down the latest fatality survey in this month's Parachutist for them. Give them an overview of the type of people that jump at your DZ. And remember, whatever you say positive will not change some readers perceptions. It looks like you will be a fine representative of skydiving. Good Luck. And offer the reporter a leap!
  3. Why pick on bad tandem landings on youtube? What about the hundreds of other skydive videos on youtube by "experts", crashing into countless objects, demos gone bad, hook turns gone wild, etc.... Don't worry about it, the rest of us do a fine job ruining the sports reputation. And guess what, the first timers still flock to the DZ.
  4. I can't get an April Fools joke past you Sis! DB I'm in on a lake "Blue Hole" jump!
  5. good thing that got cleared up, because so many DZ's use a PC-12 also...
  6. Go to the PAC750XL (Pacific AeroSpace Corp.)website. They have a comparison chart between a number of aircraft for operating costs. A Caravan and Grand Caravan is listed, new and used categories also. Porter costs would be best figured out by one of the many DZ's operating them.
  7. Ckret, welcome back... Was Cooper possibly a Canadian??? Did he bring his own gear on board unnoticed??? Was he putting on long undies in the Lavatory??? If it was Duane, wouldn't he have told the world it was him, so Jo could make some $$$'s after his death??? Did he really jump??? Ckret, with all of the new found interest in DB Cooper, have you decided to bring in the entire flight crew for interviews??? Are you willing to sit down with Jo to hear her out and view/hear the "evidence" she claims??? And when do we get the answers to the mysterious found parachute???
  8. Thanks for your military service. Discuss this with your AFF instructor, S&TA or DZO. They will sort you out on the paperwork, aircraft use, safety, FAA regulations, your own abilities, etc. A lot of the folks here have done crazier things than jump on to a 40 acre backyard. Do a bunch more jumps and surprise the hell out of your family in the future, they'll love it! Stay Safe!
  9. The reunion weekend was amazing! There were about 100 or so past and present jumpers show up. Some prehistoric reptiles got back in the air and a lot of hilarious stories were recalled. A few cocktails were even thrown back and there was a buffet dinner on Saturday evening. No one looked any older, greyer or fatter and everyones jumpsuit fit fine! Big thanks to Dave for putting this idea together! It was a very special weekend indeed.
  10. Speedy the VX39 has a larger pack volume than you may want for your too cool for school container. I think the VX31.5 will look better with the "Last Chance+ 35" reserve. And be sure to use the collapsable 3" pilot chute for less drag. I have done accuracy, demos and CRW with my VX...it's a versatile canopy! When I get 100 jumps on the VX31.5 I am going to downsize to the VXXX29.1, my friends say I can handle it no problem.
  11. Well, I suppose i'll go. All the other kids are doing it...
  12. My wife is a Deputy DA. She convicts guys all of the time that say they are jumpers. It turns out they usually have made a tandem at some point in their pitiful life. She always scolds them for giving jumping a bad name on their way to the grey bar. She says we do a good enough job giving it a bad name and don't need help from any criminals!
  13. If it was a perfect skydive world the low person would stay just out from under the fromation and pull in place at about 2200ft, sort of a reverse cameraman pulling in the middle. The rest of the formation could keep an eye on the jumper and would track at the designated altitudes and be very clear. But that would never happen in the real world and probably end up a disaster. There are many degrees of low, and how many are low. We all have probably tracked like hell to save ourselves at a high altitude on big ways gone bad. The best thing is to discuss it with the LO or the others in your group. There are many factors...how many groups? What exit position in the groups? What is the experience of the jumpers on your load? Start the "low guy buys beer rule" and it will eliminate this need for discussion!
  14. Mike Mangold pre ESPN Air Race Red Bull star days! Sean Tucker Nick DG(now THAT"S famous!) Mr. D-1 himself Angie Everhart
  15. Must have been a great BBQ at the DZ that night!
  16. So here is the deal of the Century. One of my staff guys can't make the boogie due to circumstances out of his control. That means I have one slot open for the boogie. It includes a ride down on the otter, leaving this Monday morning at 5AM. The otter will be back about March 5th. pm for for details and the low, low price info!
  17. The CSPA and it's members should sue a certain former DZO for bringing all of this bad press and legislation to the forefront. Has Sharon spoken with Ed Scott at USPA? We Yanks should help out as our friendly government agency may try to impose such BS in the future.
  18. One of the key points I explain to people about an emergency exit is... Are you over a hill or mountain on the climb to altitude? An alti showing 4,000ft may have you really at 2,000ft of usable altitude. Watch the climb out runs at your own DZ and when you go to boogies or visit other DZ's. At places like Perris there are small hills around, at Lost Prairie and other DZ's there are some major elevation changes on the climb to jump run.
  19. It amazes me how everyone is in a hurry to downsize. Here are a few things to think of. Just because you can stand up your current canopy doesn't mean you are ready to downsize. Just because you can land it in no wind out in the nice grassy LZ doesn't mean you can put it down safely on a city street, backyard or other "outs" you may need to use after a bad spot. The "should I downsize my canopy horse" gets beaten yet again...
  20. Maybe Cooper had a wet suit on under his suit. Cut off at the knees and arms like a "Shorty" of today. Maybe he had a different pair of shoes in his brief case. Along with a compass and some road flares that looked like a bomb. There probably would have been some reward money, so why go to the trouble of burying him if found? Think of the story you could sell. And I asked a few threads/posts ago. Wasn't there a "He never jumped and hid on the plane" theory?
  21. My heart sank when I got the call last week. We used to do night jumps together as the "Moon Brothers". We would put glow sticks out of all of the holes in a Pro Tech helmet, looking like a lit up punk rocker. Jerry made me laugh so often, telling some pretty funny SEAL days stories. He always asked about taking the fire dept. test, and I encouraged him to do so and get out of the war business. I heard his death was unconfirmed and I so wanted this to not be true... Fly free Moon Brother...
  22. Hooper is just mad Scotland Yard isn't in the loop!
  23. Ask your dad... That's what my kids do when mom says no!
