  1. What the hell is the big deal about the teleprompter? So he uses a teleprompter. Everyone else reads their speech from something else. And they all have speech writers. I'm not taking political sides, I'm just saying you probably could've made a real point by picking out any number of legitimate flaws. Like how not being able to get out a coherent sentence (not even being able to read the written speech) may lead people to think that you're one of the duller crayons. (O.K., so maybe I am taking sides....) "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning." ~Catherine Aird
  2. I'm a member of PETA and I think the sea kittens thing is ridiculous. It's their way of trying to make people look at fish differently. The theory is that we're more connected to animals we can pet and make eye contact with. Really, sea kittens? Some of what they come up with is iffy, but from a general animal rights perspective I agree with the mission. Keep the bridge open, there are plenty of places to fish and the name will give everyone something to make fun of. 3. Yep - you're screwed. Yeah this close ->
  4. I started vacuuming it up last night and thought, "This isn't working. I swear this shit is spreading around, getting bigger. *Gasp* It's the Blob!!" Secretly, my boyfriend had used the attachment and not reattached it properly. All the paper was sucked up the bottom and blown out the hose attachment - I was spraying the "confetti" all around the room! "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning." ~Catherine Aird
  5. I'm putting together a huge resource binder as a project for one of my classes. I'm almost done. My three-hole punch just threw up all over my floor . Meh. "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning." ~Catherine Aird
  6. But it's not petty. It's the way we communicate with the rest of the world; we should do so clearly. Wouldn't you correct someone who constantly figured that 3+8=15? People don't seem to have a problem correcting others or being corrected about things like that, but when it comes to our native language (I make exceptions for E.S.L. people) people get all uppity about it. Nobody's perfect, I'm just saying that your language is worth knowing. "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning." ~Catherine Aird
  7. I'm going to be an English teacher pretty soon and am appalled at how many teachers of all subjects can't get a sentence out properly. I have had to argue with instructors about my grammar and track down grammar books to bring in to said instructors to prove that they were wrong. Presently, I have an instructor who claims that she takes points off for grammatical errors. I've saved up every single assignment, memo, PowerPoint presentation, etc. she's given us. Every single one of those has multiple errors. I can't wait until I type "own" instead of "won" and don't have time to catch it. I'm going to pull out a huge stack of red-blotched papers and hand them to her. "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning." ~Catherine Aird
  8. It could definitely be something related to computer/eyesight, but if you're certain it's the lights then do something about it. I had the same problem at my old job and had to resort to wearing my sunglasses while I was working in the office sometimes (seriously). Those lights were heinous and I learned that you never "get used to" them. Check out http://www.theledlight.com/ (or google "LED lights"). LEDs are softer than florescents and should help. If it's at all possible to move your desk/cubicle/whatever to a natural light source then try to make that happen (I recommend really explaining migraine symptoms to your boss/whoever can move you as they may think it's just a headache). Even with florescent bulbs in place the natural light will act as sort of a buffer and relieve some of your suffering. 9. He's not exactly the brightest knife in the drawer. He fell outta the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down. Even if she had the sense her mama gave her she'd still be short of a nickel. It's better to ask for forgiveness later than it is to ask for permission now. 11. Things my grandma says: It's hotter than a whore in a feather bed in July. It's hotter than a two peckered goat. I'm sweatin' like a fat girl writing her first love letter. You'd think we lived somewhere hot, but we're from Michigan... "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning." ~Catherine Aird

  13. Fair Game. The wiki page cites quite a few examples (I didn't read them all) where victims of Fair Game sued the Church of Scientology and won. Seriously, South Park took them on and all that happened was that Isaac Hayes quit. Then they turned Chef into the Darth Vader of a child molesting club. Maybe S.B.C. et al did write some stuff about Scientology and it got cut, but i find it more likely that it was ignored because there was already so much going on and making fun of the usual "participants" was more fun and easier. 14. I quit a while ago. I still slip up every now and again, but here's what gets me through those times when I think I'd kill for a cigarette: think about how much better you feel without them. I didn't realize this when I first quit because I'd smoked for almost 10 years and it was just so normal, but after I slipped and had a couple, coming off that made it very obvious. I have way more headaches (migraines, even) when I'm smoking, the smell that I never noticed before is heinous, my circulation sucks after just one or two (limbs falling asleep faster, etc.), after even one I start yawning because my lungs aren't getting all the oxygen they're used to, my skin (face, particularly) is drier and I look older. I have these pictures of some smoker friends who are in their mid 40s now (I'm 27). In the pictures, from 10 years ago, they barely look older than I am now. Just 10 years later...well, smokers really do age faster than nonsmokers. Just keep stopping. It sucks to screw up after doing so well, but you always have the opportunity to stop. Saying, "No" gets easier. It sucks to deny yourself something you want, but I promise you can do it. "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning." ~Catherine Aird
  15. I bet it's the same thing my mom does. With holiday-appropriate confetti. "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning." ~Catherine Aird
  16. I wasn't around when it was happening, but I've heard stories about the late 1980s and 1990s with people doing the same thing (taking the keys with them) at our old dropzone (now closed for unrelated reasons). "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning." ~Catherine Aird
  17. I couldn't vote. I like receiving, not giving. But my boyfriend doesn't want his ass played with anyhow, so nobody's missing out. Unless you're talking about smackin' or grabbin' the cheeks. Then it's a free for all! "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning." ~Catherine Aird
  18. This is close to what I would say. If she's being coy and flirty it may not hurt to suggest a lunch date if she's refused a nighttime one. Some people like that "hard to get" stuff. But if she's annoyed (look at her face: not smiling, rolling eyes, clenching teeth, red faced, distant look) or making up excuses not to go, move on. Also, don't try to impress her with stupid macho shit when you're trying to hit on her ("I never thought I'd be this well off by my age!" "I have three boats!" etc.) (some idiot actually said these things and more to me last weekend; I wish I were meaner, I would've called him out for being a huge douche). "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning." ~Catherine Aird
  19. I've had both and each worked out great. The F.W.B. situation lasted a full two years, but was more F.W.B. for a year and a half and F.B. for 6 months. Every now and then one of us would start dating someone. We'd just quit doing it and start up again when we were both single. 20. I just can't read this without thinking of skydivers: http://grandrapids.craigslist.org/fuo/1232020193.html "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning." ~Catherine Aird
  21. Really...? A great many (I would venture to say most) people with STDs and/or unplanned pregnancies are not promiscuous. Promiscuous (Webster's): "characterized by a lack of discrimination; specif., engaging in sexual intercourse indiscriminately or with many persons" I assume the 100% guarantee you speak of is abstinence (I apologize if I'm wrong), but STDs can be passed on in a number of ways without intercourse. 23. [replyStrangely, I don't own anything by NIN. I probably should, cos I like what I've heard in movies and stuff. What would you recommend? Everything! Most of the radio stuff is older (Head Like A Hole, Closer), so most of what you've heard in movies will be like songs from that era. But NIN has done music specifically for movies and some of that's more electronic like their newer stuff (which you can download free at their website). That tends to be more atmospheric/etheral, but it's beautiful. I saw NIN at Lollapalooza last year, too. Tool is going to be there this year. Is that who you're thinking of? I'm getting a one day pass to see Tool. "If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning." ~Catherine Aird
  24. Maybe you all know this, but in case no one's announcing it: I was a a NIN concert last weekend at Bonnaroo and half way through the set Trent Reznor announced that the show they were in the middle playing of was NIN's last U.S. show ever. Ever. They'll finish this tour in Tokyo (I think) and that's it. It's really sad, but they've been around for 20 years. Better to leave than fizzle out. I think Trent will maybe release solo stuff without touring and produce, but I believe him when he says NIN is done. 25. I've written this or some variation of it at least three times now (see page 3): This is why I posted in the first place. I didn't assume that she represented the whole area. It was the nonchalance with which she made the comment that made me wonder if racism was more prevalent or less hidden in the south. That's why I'm on here asking Southerners, not just assuming they're all racist. There's racism in Michigan, too, but not very open and not just as an aside to strangers. Read the damn thread.
