    Economics

O.K. I'm tired of complaining about the situation. Time to think about how to dig out. Wealth is still created fastest by the production of a product, either by processing raw materials or raw ideas. It doesn't seem to me that we are going to manufacture significantly more cars, washing machines, or doodads. To do that would take more factories and a bigger market which requires growing economies which there won't be for a while. I really doubt that building more houses is a viable option. Information technology is a commodity which doesn't seem to indicate huge growth. You can't dig enough gold, silver, copper, or even iron ore out of the earth here at home to make a major improvement. Our human capital isn't going to increase drastically, so sweat equity of any kind, blue, white, or green collar doesn't indicate major gains. We have a great agri-industrial complex, but it isn't going to grow much. (No pun intended) What do we have that we can sell, that has a huge market that is only getting bigger, and which price keeps going up. I'm thinking energy. Sure it's going to take technology, but that much human capital we should be able to scrape up, along with some investment that may still be laying around. Off shore + ANWR + Bakken + Green River + Unita and others. Horizontal drilling, Shell Oil's technology Appalachian natural gas. Who doubts American ingenuity and ability to excel when faced with adversity? This might be survival or just a better way to bridge the gap to green, but it takes more than hope, it takes hard work and hard choices. Sell the oil, develop genetic engineered bacteria, algae, Sterling Engine Solar, catalytic biofuel transformation for the future. Seems like if we could turn all this vile and negative energy flying around these days into something productive we'd have something to look forward to instead of something to dread. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  2. Just curious as to who you mean by house buyers. Those who bought many houses for investment or anyone who bought a house? I'd call the ones that bought one to flip or one knowing that it was too much for them and then took out a second or bought with a 0 down ARM greedy. Those that bought many to flip really greedy. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  3. hundreds of greedy mortgage lenders thousands of greedy realestate agents millions of house buyers that were either greedy or stupid And who will have to pay for it? The people that were responsible enough to avoid getting into the fix in the first place. Maybe they should sell shares in the government and let the people that pay the taxes vote their shares. No tax - no shares - no vote. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  4. If you want a a constitutional revolution useat the incumbents. The resulting gridlock i Washington due to the breakdown of the oligarchy will permit the economy to correct itself - and it will be a painful but short correction. The recovery will take a decade or more but the fat will be out of the system. Maybe it will come out better maybe not but that is change you could really count on. Wouldn't make any difference who was elected president. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.

  6. Paul. Give it up. They just don't get the BIG picture. And the FED is printing money as fast as they can right now. W/ not a fucking thing to back it. Not really. What backs it up is our peoductivity. Of course you have to be able to take inthe whole picture to see the outcome. The downside risk is close to a trillion but it's like stock, you don't lose money until you sell. Remember that the assets the trust would buy are not worthless, just unknown. They may sell at 10 cents on the dollar or 110 cents on the dollar. We won't see a dime if they make money, if you want to make a noise make it for giving the process visibility so the government doesn't squeeze and squander. One thing is for sure, if they don't get it fixed a trillion dollars will seem like beer money. Our economy is about 16 trillion a year. 90% of that goes away if there is a credit shutdown. Shut down the credit the world dominos fall. I don't know where this will end up but I'm in the tank for the governments (cause there are more than ours involved in this) and I pray they get it right. I worry that the congress will try to make political capital and if they do next week will make this week look good. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  7. Don't really want to start a fire, but thought you McCain supporters would enjoy this. http://townhall.com/columnists/JohnHawkins/2008/09/19/barack_obamas_top_ten_campaign_gaffes --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  8. That right there tells me that the author is an ignorant fuckwit - Alaska is open-carry, just like Vermont. You don't HAVE to have a license to carry concealed or to open carry. Just another smear piece from the left. I think that might be wrong. When I lived in Idaho there was an open carry law, you did have to have a HUNTING license to carry a firearm. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.

  12. So now the government is talking about buying up bad mortgages. Barry O wants to give the low and middle income earners freebees. Why not just give them the houses? --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  13. Amanda saved me the trouble. This is the guy that is talking about cronyism and lobbyists on his opponents staff? http://townhall.com/video/TheFivewithAmandaCarpenter/1450_091708Five --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  14. very perceptive. I notice that when he is tired he slips into a "Pulpit" rythm and style. That will occur when he is not using the teleprompter. It is a common tactic in diplomacy and business to watch for the fall back style which is more represntative of the natural style. Our old "management grid" course years ago was designed to wear you out then get you to make a pitch to determine where your head was really at. Good to see that people pay attention to the subtleties. To be fair and balanced ou would have to see that McCain is alot more stilted when using a teleprompter and more relaxed when not. He tendancy to use collector phrases, or phases that give him a chance to think like "my friends" or repeating a short sentence are characteristics of orators seen most on the senate or house floors ala CSPAN. Also interesting is Biden who does not emply these techniques and is prone to gaffes. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.

Maybe we could use some of those empty oil barrels - looking at Pelosi's "Comprehensive" energy bill they won't need them for oil. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.

Basically Fannie and Freddie ousted CEO's will not receive "golden parachutes" You can trace this problem back to the loosening of rules under the clinton administration and a little cronyism, but there is plenty of blame in both parties seeking to take the credit for delivering the American Dream. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.

There is some talk thisevening that WAMU is putting itself up for sale and there are some rumors that there is at least one suiter. I think the financial networks may have some followup. Also some talk of Morgan Stanley merging with Wakovia. With BOA acquiring Merrill Lynch it seems to be leading the way for tie-ups between investment banks and depository banks. This might signal a shift in the landscape that might settle the financial markets. This is something that looks like a possibility in the U.K. as well with talks ongoing today between HBOS and Lloyds. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  18. Not so fast....I also think Gays should have the right to marry and that a person owning a Bazooka is a bad idea. I'm not that conservative. I think I'm an issue voter. As are most of us - even me. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  19. What campaign spech are you watching? Everything I ever see or have heard is some new plan to spend and spend some more. What cuts is he proposing? . Do you have a link to the itemization of this cost? I have some idea of where and how much but I'd like to get a second source. Did you know we're spending $12Billion a MONTH on the war that Bush started under false pretenses? --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  20. I see that we are in violent agreement. I've got to admit that watching your posts I was surprised (pleasantly) that you lean conservative. Who knew --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  21. The point here is that if you are only willing to blame one party you will never make progress. You must accept that the problem goes beyond partisan politics. I've only seen one candidate will to go after both parties and I believe that if there is any chance to get beyond this issue that is going to be necessary. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.

  23. There is a vitriolic blame game going on regarding the banking crisis so much in the news. I expect the candidates to say their plan is better than the opposition, that is politics after all. The solutions to date don't excite me on either side. I tend to look beyond the, "And the answer is . . ." and try to read beyond the fold on larger policy. What does strike me regarding the blame game is the differences. While one candidate is assigning the whole of the blame to the party opposite, one is blaming both. I believe that you have to be willing to express that no one party is without blame. Both candidates blame the banking sector, both blame fat cat CEO's and neither blames people who live beyond their means and then cry foul when the bill comes (so far - don't hold your breath on ths one). --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  24. It isn't representative taxation that I object to, it's the idea that just because someone has a lower income they deserve to get a handout from the government. It is not a tax cut if you don't pay any now (40% of Americans) it's a payout. Some folks may need and deserve that and some probably do not. I object to giving people money for nothing. I also believe that CEO's should be accountable. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  25. Everthing mentioned in the clicky is infrastructure, education or research. I see no hyppocracy there. Tell me just what you are trying to say. Do you believe that it is a good thing for the economy and the people for people with higher incomes to give a share the fruits of their labors with people who have lower incomes whether they need it or not? --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
