  3. Now I'm no blind idealist. No candidate is going to make a clean sweep of this deadwood. I did in fact advocate unseating the incumbents some time ago, about the time the NH primaries were going on. It's the reason I chose back then to back McCain. Not because he'll do everything he says he'll do, but because he says he'll do what needs to be done. If he does a small fraction of what he suggests he will do it will be a start. In essence I'm betting he'll at least try. I don't get that vibe from Obama even though he sounds very tempting. Dems in Congress and Dems in the White house doesn't suggest reform to me. Chances may be 1 in 100 that McCain would get anything done, but that's better than 1 in 101. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  4. One thing I've learned in my years on this planet is that the pen really isn't mightier than the Glock. NO REALLY . . . IT'S NOT. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  5. No problem. I think this may be the best we can hope for as a rescue bill, but the punishment phase will be another matter. I hope we can find and punish those responsible without creating a McCarthy style witch hunt. I am much less hope for that. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  6. It's Kevin's Cops - you know the ones that can't seem to close the deal on Casey Anthony. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  7. Just so you know, this isn't my suggestion. It's my take on a read of the actual draft of the bill from the Senate. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  8. 451 pages. It contains pretty much the kitchen sink. I'm not saying I didn't miss authorization for the purchase of Greenland in there somewhere. When we get a document like this I walk it down to contracts and they hire a small company to go though it. Usually takes a month and then the fun starts. I think this can go two ways. One is that it will pass because everyone is afraid of what will happen if it doesn't. Two, the House will feel like they are being played by the Senate and shoot it down or delay for a week. I'm betting on the first because there are alot of trees to hide behind in it. One thing is for sure, they will probably have to hire all those unemployed people from Wall street to administer it. Call it a jobs programm too, yea that's the ticket and jobs program. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  9. So I'm reading this new "Bail Out Bill" and I come across this. It doesn't really bear discussion, but it makes you scratch your head. A nice break in the otherwise tedious task. 20 SEC. 503. EXEMPTION FROM EXCISE TAX FOR CERTAIN 21 WOODEN ARROWS DESIGNED FOR USE BY 22 CHILDREN. 23 (a) IN GENERAL.—Paragraph (2) of section 4161(b) 24 is amended by redesignating subparagraph (B) as sub301 O:\AYO\AYO08C32.xml S.L.C. 1 paragraph (C) and by inserting after subparagraph (A) 2 the following new subparagraph: 3 ‘‘(B) EXEMPTION FOR CERTAIN WOODEN 4 ARROW SHAFTS.—Subparagraph (A) shall not 5 apply to any shaft consisting of all natural 6 wood with no laminations or artificial means of 7 enhancing the spine of such shaft (whether sold 8 separately or incorporated as part of a finished 9 or unfinished product) of a type used in the 10 manufacture of any arrow which after its as11 sembly— 12 ‘‘(i) measures 5/16 of an inch or less in 13 diameter, and 14 ‘‘(ii) is not suitable for use with a bow 15 described in paragraph (1)(A).’’. 16 (b) EFFECTIVE DATE.—The amendments made by 17 this section shall apply to shafts first sold after the date 18 of enactment of this Act. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.

  11. TITLE II—TRANSPORTATION AND DOMESTIC FUEL SECURITY PROVISIONS This is another carryover from earlier legislation that has been enhanced to make it better looking and less partisan. Complex and lengthy it is generally a good re-write in my opinion. By striking ‘‘cellulosic biomass ethanol’’ each place it appears and inserting ‘‘cellulosic biofuel" they made a fig change. Biofuel means Biodiesel as well as ethanol (any bio liquid fuel really) Why this is a big deal is that it applies aid to the biodiesel industry. This has enormous implications but not something to discuss here. It is a very good thing. This isn't an Apollo Program deal but it is a move in the right direction. It extends the program beyond the original legislation. It does not give credits to fuels produced outside the USA. It also extends/provides tax credits for plug-in electric drive. It adds oil shale and tar sands to the bill. Again, this is a major effort to bring oil production on shore. (Google Green River Basin and Bakken). There are technology issues, but this is a good first step. Something for the bicyckers too but I didn't read it. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.

  13. This is essentially modification to existing legislation that the Senate had passed. In some cases it increases provisions in others it extends provisions. It is very comprehensive and as a Power Generation Executive I can say with some degree of certainty that our legal departments will be looking it over carefully AFTER IT HAS PASSED because we won't have any chance of getting ahead of it. By and large it is good legislation that will need tweeking. There are parts that won't work but that is for another time. It tries to address conservation, environment, research and development, construction, and innovation. It also has several provisions designed to support a greater energy independence using alternatives (small impact) and coal development (large impact) while keeping the environament in mind, Here are a few points. - Trying to help dig more coal for export - Trying to help produce more electricity from coal - Trying to encourage cleaner coal use and CO2 capture - Encouraging smaller alternative generation such as for a house or farm via wind or solar. This is essentially an extension of credits beyond 2009. - Encouraging wave and tide as well as small hydro. - Making trading easier for electricity producers - Incentivizing CO2 reduction - Regulatory reform - Provisions for helping victims of past health and safety issues predominantly in the coal industry. - Some effort to help the steel industry. Sorry for the generalities but this is a big section and is somewhat complex in cause and effect. I'm hopeful that it won't be to controversial. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  14. This is one they have been discussing yesterday and today. It is good news and should have been done a long time ago, however it is temporary in this bill. Designed to prevent a run on the bank. Just note that if many banks fail without takeovers FDIC will go to the treasury for more. Hopefully fewer will fail. Reality check - people did lose money because they are over the $100,000 in the past. FEDERAL CREDIT UNION ACT; TEMPORARY INCREASE IN SHARE INSURANCE. Also added and does the same thing for Credit Union Shares. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  15. I here you both and my heart agrees, but my head says I shouldn't cut off my nose to spite my face. I'm reminded of something my team leader said when discussing hostile engagements, "Anger blows out the lamp of the mind. You can always get even tomorrow and it's easier to do on a full belly." --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  16. and SEC. 133. STUDY ON MARK-TO-MARKET ACCOUNTING Essentially the bill will allow the Administration via the SEC the authority to suspend Mark to Market Accounting. This clause does two things, it speeds the process because it removes any doubt that SEC has the authority. (They were exploring whether or not they could do it without legislation legally) Second, it makes it a suspension acknowledging that perhaps the original legislation (SOX) is flawed. So it may be revised at a later date and before it is re-instated. Basically Mark to Market has the potential to make a company's balance sheet look worse than it actually is by undervaluing real assets. Sabanes is thought by many in business and accounting to be a tournequit for a paper cut. Enacted to provide oversight for accountiing methods that resulted in the Enron scandall and others. Whatever your view on Sarbanes, this will cause a review that will hopefully improve the regulations. The net result here is to provice some balance sheet relief to companies holding bad paper on viable real property. It should have the same effect as pumping money into the system (at least that is the hope) --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  17. It looks something like that, but it also may have the effect of putting a floor under home prices. In total cash flow for a family including investment initiative (401K present value and future value) it may be a better deal than letting them go bankrupt. My own attitude on this is there is no solution that won't cost the majority something. The question is how to minimize the impact. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  18. The house is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it at the time of sale, not what it cost you years ago. So your $220,000 is probably wishful thinking at this point, regardless. I understand your argument, I should have clarified that the $220,000 figure was meant to market value today. The $180,000 figure was meant to represent the discounted NPV paid by the program, which could just as easily be 30% of market value. For the sake of example you might want to use $200,000 as market value, the example reamins consistent. I didn't want to get into a value debate about discounted value of the paper because it is not well delineated in the draft. Section 124 adds a bit of confusion to the mix, but I believe the example remains the same. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  19. I'm trying to read and digest this bill as fast as possible. So far it looks better, but it also looks like a very complex and bureaucratic giant requiring lots of people to administer. I'm in the subject section. My read suggests to me that the government may buy troubled securities backed by mortgages and mortgages. They could then encourage the servicers of those mortgages to negotiate with the troubled mortgage owners at the net present value of that mortgage to assist the homeowner to stay in the property and keep paying the loan. Example: (again my take) A homeowner is in default of on a $200,000 mortgage on a $220,000 face value home. The Government purchases the mortgage for a "Net Present Value" let's say $180,000. Assuming the homeowner can pay their mortgage if the principle is reduced to $180,000. If that is the deal struck by the servicer, the person keeps the house, pays the lower principle, and the mortgage gets sold to a bank. The proceeds from the sale goes back to the government and the loss is paid for by the insurance that the original owner buys from the government. This would keep people in their homes but reduce the value of the property and the government would not lose or not lose too much. Two issues might be, this is a labor intensive operation - lots of people required to administer. Second, Say this house is in your neighborhood and your house and your neighbors houses cost $220,000. Now there is a house in the neighborhood that is valued at $180,000. When you sell your house the neighborhood comps go down reducing the value of your home. This amounts to a cost to taxpayers that may not be immediately visible. If I've got this wrong, please discuss. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  20. Realizing that to be human is to have preferences dare we say bias. Financial conflict of interest may step over the line for the Commission on Presidential Debates . Ifill and her publisher are banking on an Obama/Biden win may buoy her book sales of “Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama.” Ifill has appeared on numerous radio and TV talk shows over the past several months to cash in on her access to the Obama campaign. She recently penned a cover story on the Obamas for Essence magazine that earned much buzz. The title: “The Obamas: Portrait of an American Family.” --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.

  23. You're blaming Pelosi for not passing a Bush proposal? If it makes you happy.... I'm blaming Pelosi for not leading - which is her job. OBTW she took ownership for the "greatly improved bipartisan plan" --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  24. Not that I full agree with your premise, but your "facts" do highlight that the CRA provided an environment that allowed greed and predation to run unchecked. No one "forced" the issue - it "allowed" the issue. I see that as a failure of politicians to look past their narrow objectives. Imagine if they had to perform an economic environmental impact study before passing legislation like this. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
  25. I understand completely, and I understand why there is such a zealous and rabid pack trying to diminish the opposition rather than build up their candidate. It's not that they believe he isn't the best candidate, they do. It is that they actually believe their own self induced hype that he is "the one". Sorry disciples, I lived through Kennedy, there is no such thing in the two party system. But I also know that if they won't see some faults in him now they won't see them in him later. I believe he is dangerously liberal and not at all a person that can lead. Much like Pelosi he expects rather than inspires and dictates rather than leads. Oh well, I know how to make money with a socialist president. Conservatives gain wealth with conservative presidents and get rich with liberal presidents. --------------------------------------------- Every day is a bonus - every night is an adventure.
