  1. See attached. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  2. Will be at Eloy. I hear there's an 80s party that night. If it's anything like previous years, we'll manage to stay up till about 12:30 then crash. 3. Well there you go. I learn something new everyday. So why the hell is that guy offended I didn't know AFF instructor's need medicals? I mean, if even rigger's don't need them, and TI's don't need them, it follows AFFI's don't need them either. I still don't see how me assuming AFFI's don't need medicals is me not knowing my facts? You're not my doctor, you're just some random wannabe doctor on the internet, so you don't offend me. Annoy me, maybe, but I wouldn't go so far as to say offended. I would, however, be offended if my own doctor presented things as facts that, in fact, weren't facts. I know my doctor has a lot more training, knowledge, and experience in medicine than I do, and I expect her to apply that knowledge to helping me make decisions about my own health. If she knows things to be facts, she can present them as such. Otherwise, though, she shouldn't represent them as such, and if she did (and I busted her on it) I would probably find another doctor. (Just in case we're unclear on definitions: Assumptions facts. Opinions facts. Conclusions based on erroneous information facts.) 4. Cool story, bro? "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  5. I posted this recently in another thread... I think it fits here as well: "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  6. Were there ever more than six of them? "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  7. Meh. Pretty views are nice, but would get old really quickly without the things you have on your "NOT" list. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  8. Well, as long as you have headphones... "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  9. I didn't really balk at it because the newer motels (like the Fairfield Inn) were running about that per night during Nationals, and most of the other hotels in Ottawa weren't much cheaper. Fairfield's perfectly nice and comes with a free breakfast with all the powdered eggs you can eat, but I wouldn't mind paying the same amount and having my own kitchen. 10. Yeah, I can't say I've ever been sent anywhere shady by an airline. I've stayed in some sort of dumpy, less-than-updated hotels, but they all felt safe enough. Airlines have always sent me to a major chain, not a local hotel. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  11. Yup. For things within the airlines' control (maintenance, crew problems, etc.) they are required to provide food/lodging for passengers who are delayed significantly - typically they'll give you a voucher for an airport or nearby hotel (so no cash actually changes hands). Weather... nothing's required. I have gotten lodging provided before but it's very rare. That said, if you do get stuck, ask the airline if they have negotiated discounts - often times you can get a really steep discount at an airport hotel. I recall getting stuck in Denver a few years back and getting a rate in the $40s at the airport Courtyard, which was then an almost-new hotel. 12. Another way to check conditions is to find out if your airport has an AWOS station. The majority of them are phone-based, where you call in to get an update on the cloud cover, visibility, and winds. A few have online versions (same info presented in a graphic interface - link below). If they have one, it's a good number to have programmed into your phone. It doesn't help with the forecasts, but it does help if you want to know what's going on at the moment you're making your decision to leave. Of course, it helps to have some context on the overall weather patterns. For example, I can look at a forecast at my home DZ that says 12-15 mph winds and know that it's often conservative and I probably want to check ahead of time to see if actual conditions are higher. If I wake up Saturday morning and call AWOS and the winds are already above 15, I know (from experience) that it doesn't bode well for the day since the winds will probably go up even more - our typical pattern is that the winds will go up most of the day and might drop off mid-late afternoon. If I'm only planning to go up for a day, that might convince me to stay home. http://www.saiawos2.com/listme.php "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 13. If you're in a 6-way, it would seem to me that no one should be tracking up jump run (I'd send two at 45 degrees to jump run, 2 at 90 degrees, and 2 at 135 degrees), so if that's how you broke off, and you still ran into the second group, then yes, I think the second group left way too soon. If you're in a somewhat bigger way and someone must track up jump run, one method I've seen is to go up jump run a little bit, and then veer left or right. It doesn't solve all problems if the group after you had inadequate separation, but should hopefully help some. Your primary responsibility on a track is to separate from your own group. It seems to me that the likelihood of a collision because of inadequate separation is far higher within your own group than with the next group. If I'm in an 8-way (as I was a lot last year as I was on a team), last thing I want to see is my teammate veering off the line they established... back towards me. 14. I just got an iPhone for work, and I've been playing "stump Siri." Best one so far: Me: Siri, why are you passive-aggressive? Siri: Is that what you think? 15. As I told a new(er) jumper the other day who is getting ready to order his second belly suit: "You don't replace jumpsuits... you just add to your collection." "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  16. You can use the same suit for both of these. As others have said, get grippers (inside & outside of the legs) and booties. There's no downside (other than a higher cost for the suit) and tremendous upside. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 17. This. I try to get through the holiday season by at least not bringing treats (or too many) into my home. Though Trader Joe's (where I do most of my grocery shopping) makes it really tough with the gauntlet of holiday goodies they have set up as you wind through the line to the cash register. Evil, I tell you, evil. But if I am baking, the traditional Toll House cookie recipe, made with real butter (of course), with half chocolate chips and half butterscotch chips. Doesn't need to be Christmas for me to enjoy that. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 18. Hey, at least they made #1 on one ranking this year. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  19. I just read up on his accident. It sucks, what happened to him. Wonder if he still hangs around dropzones He's representing the U.S. in accuracy at the Dubai International Parachuting Championship right now. Yeah, he still hangs around dropzones. He's been sending some updates to Blue Skies Magazine. There's also a link there to a recent CBS report on him. http://blueskiesmag.com/2013/11/29/jarrett-martin-dipc-updates/ "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 20. The door tags are going to be more interesting, at least. (see example attached) "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  21. The introduction of wind tunnels and high level coaching (ie Airspeed camps) had way more to do with that than what kind of helmets they were wearing. You mean to say correlation causation? I dunno, personally I found that my skillz increased exponentially when I got my G2. I've been afraid to get a G3 for fear of leaving my teammates in the dust. 22. All you need is a screwdriver to remove the visor. (Phillips head IIRC but I'm not home to look at my helmet). "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  23. I only delivered for one summer in my college town, though the delivery area didn't hit the college neighborhoods, so we had a mix of good neighborhoods and a few that were a little sketchy. Sometimes people would ask if they were supposed to tip and I would think "I'm a waitress who brings food to your house!" but I'd normally just say "Well, most people do and it's always appreciated" or something like that. And of course you learn the technique of giving change in small bills so it's easy enough for them to hand a few back to you. This was 20+ years ago ... back then IIRC typical tips were in the $2-3 range. I enjoyed the job for the most part because I got an hourly wage + 50 cents per delivery, which came in the form of a paycheck. But I'd usually work 4-8 to get the dinner rush, then I had a pocket full of cash to hit the bars that night, too. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. 24. Are we there yet? "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
  25. I didn't think they allowed vegetables that aren't deep fried in Texas. "There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
