  1. I'm a white water kayaker. It is surprising how much force even slow moving water can have. It can be impossible to stand in knee deep water that doesn't look fast at all. This data comes from Les Bechdel & Slim Ray's book "River Rescue": Current Average Total Force of Water Velocity lbf/kgf mph/kph (on legs) (on body) (on swamped boat) 3/2 16.8/7.6 33.6/15.3 168.0/76.2 6/3.7 67.2/30.5 134.0/60.8 672.0/305.0 9/5.6 151.0/69.0 302.0/137.0 1512.0/686.0 12/7.5 269.0/122.0 538.0/244.0 2688.0/1219.0 "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  2. Rob: Do you recall where that came out? I was trying to find the exact wording but can't find the info (in PIMs or Tech Bulletins). Technical bulletin #59. "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  3. Why not just take a trip outside the US? "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  4. No right??? Your rigger has the right to charge whatever price they want to for an I&R. You, of course, have the right to take your rig to a different rigger if you don't like it. "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg

  6. Funny - that's exactly how my Canon manual says I should clean the sensor! "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  7. Canon doesn't make a 10-20. I suspect you are thinking of the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5. As an EF-S lens, no, you will not be able to mount it on the 5D. The EF-S lenses will only mount on bodies with APS-C sized sensors (i.e. the 1.6 crop factor cameras), and only on bodies newer than the 10D. In other words: the Rebel, Rebel XT, Rebel XTi, 20D and 30D. "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  8. Don't need the 120 jumps, the rest is correct. "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  9. Here's a good site with lots of info about sensor cleaning. It discusses just about every cleaning method there is, and has good instructions with photos. http://www.cleaningdigitalcameras.com/warnings.html I use pec pads and eclipse, it works great for me. 10. I'm surprised no one has said anything about this yet. Your profile says that you have a 135 reserve. If you have a malfunction, you will be flying a 135 whether you want to or not! Furthermore, odds are you will be flying it when you are low (leaving you little time to figure out how it flies), and quite possibly having to land off the DZ. If you are reconsidering your choice of main, perhaps you should also reconsider your choice of reserve. Just something to think about... 11. I don't have a Mindwarp to compare with, but I have put an audible in my Allsport and tried it out on the ground (I'll get to jump it tomorrow). On the outside of the main foam pad in the ear pieces are two thinner pieces of foam with rectangular cutouts. The audible fits into the cutout, so it doesn't create a bump in the ear piece. I can barely tell it's there, and only because it feels a tad different than the other side, not because it is uncomfortable. It is such a small difference that I am only aware of it if I think about it. If I ignore it I don't notice it at all. It is quite comfortable with the audible in place. Same thing with two audibles, it feels just a tiny bit different and is quite comfortable. BTW I am trying this with a ProTrack and a ProDytter. I'll try it with others on the weekend if I can find any to borrow, but I think my DZ is mainly a ProTrack crowd. "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  12. Mine fits ok as it is. I was going to bake it - the Bonehead FAQ says it should be baked even if it fits well because it will fit even better. I emailed Bonehead with a question about baking it, and they said I should not bake it if it fits well as is. Hmmm.... "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  13. I opted for the All-Sport. It arrived in today's mail. It does not have a Mindwarp-style bump on the right hand side. Both sides are flat, and it is completely symmetrical. Now I just have to wait for the weekend so I can jump this thing! "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  14. They'll also do that when not installed in a rig! "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  15. My guess is that is actually is flat on both sides. I think that's what BH meant when they told me that "the guner and all sport are symmetrical in looks". Maybe someone who has one can tell us for sure - Jarrett? "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  16. I emailed the same question to Bonehead Composites and thought I would share their answer here for others who may have the same question. I asked for more info about quietness in freefall and got this: which agrees with what packing_jarret said. I've narrowed it down to the Guner or the Allsport. So, the Guner is quieter, and by most reports more comfortable. I'm not sure which one looks better; I like the Allsport, haven't seen enough pictures of the Guner to decide. I think I'll probably end up with the Guner as I'd prefer comfort and quietness to looks anyway. "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  17. I'm about to order an open face Bonehead helmet, and I'm not sure which one to get. The Mindwarp Pimpdaddy, the Guner, and the All Sport all seem to be quite similar, and all sell for exactly the same price. What are the differences between the three? How do they compare for comfort, quietness, looks? I'm looking for a basic open face helmet, and I'm not planning on putting any cameras on it (if I ever do start jumping camera I'll get a dedicated helmet) so that is not a concern. Yes, I did a search, found some (mostly older) discussion about the Mindwarp versus the Guner, nothing about the All Sport. "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  18. I've only quickly glanced at the specs so far, but it looks like it doesn't take accessory lenses. Zoom lens is 39-390mm (35 mm equivalent). "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  19. I used to do that, but made the pouch I mentioned earlier in this thread because the screen was getting scratched up by the slots on the helmet earpiece. "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  20. If you aren't able to do it by yourself, try asking your rigger for assistance... or your mother! Sounds like supertack. "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  21. Only way to find out for sure is to try it, but my guess is it won't be loud enough. I'm not sure what you mean by "wax-tape". I don't have a solo, but I do have a ProTrack and a ProDytter that I put in a Protec. I sewed a pouch for it that velcros closed and also velcros into the helmet. Quick and easy to install and remove, and protects the audible from scratches. I posted some photos a while back here: http://dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1774297;#1774297 "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
  22. Never. Never had any hang ups at all. I'd actually dig in with my toes to help hang on - there is a lot of force in that three way downplane (enough to cause a ring to take a big chunk of skin off my hand in spite of two pairs of gloves; after that I stopped wearing rings). When it is time to go, I'd let go with my hands and point my toes, and just slide right off. The smoke grenades are mounted on the back of the foot, which keeps them out of the way. Sorry for being so slow to reply, I'm currently deployed to the middle east and don't have a lot of time to read dropzone.com. No opportunites to jump either... S.O.S.?

Contrary to common belief, the distress signal SOS does not stand for "save our souls". It doesn't stand for anything. In fact the signal is not actually SOS, it is a prosign (procedural signal) that is sent as one long morse code character (which just happens, by pure coincidence, to be the same as the letters SOS run together). SOS is sent as dididit dadadah dididit, while the distress signal is sent as didididadadadididit. SOS was chosen because the morse code sound was easy to remember and easy to recognize - much easier than the prosign CQD which it replaced (dadidadidadadidadadidit). CQD also carried the risk of being mistaken for CQ, which is a prosign for "calling any station". Apologies for the off-topic rambling, one of my hobbies is amateur radio (a.k.a. ham radio), and I am a proficient morse code operator. Yeah, I know, I'm a geek... 25. I've jumped into the arctic, but not into the high arctic. The furthest north I have jumped was Iqaluit and Rankin Inlet, and that was in the early summer. Still lots of ice and snow - in fact the ocean was still frozen solid. "It's amazing what you can learn while you're not talking." - Skydivesg
