  1. Sadly, she has very little memory of the past. It seems to come once in a very great while. Oddly, she can remember numbers and will call my mother, her sister, but not know who she called. Really saddens me that she doesn't remember me. She is the one who named me, when I was born. Her favorite actor was Mark Stevens http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Stevens_%28actor%29 So that became my first and middle name. She never had any boys, only girls, so she treated me like a son. I was her favorite nephew. She is still my favorite aunt. I loved to hear her stories about flying around the country in Snappy and to see that big grin on her face. She is too cool. Luckily, for her and Jim, they have saved a sizable amount and have great insurance, along with Jim's pension from McDonnell Douglas. Jim was an aircraft designer. Billie is in her 80's these days and she is frail. She probably will not live much longer. It is good to know that Jim will be there for her until the end. Sad that Robertson believes it is fine to abandon someone when they need you the most. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
  2. If you truly love someone, money shouldn't be a question. My aunt Billie was diagnosed with Alzheimer some years back. My uncle, Jim Harvey, has stayed by her side from day one. He is a hell of a great guy. When possible, he takes her out to do the things they always did. She may not recall the past, but each time he takes her up in Snappy http://www.fairchildclub.org/jh.htm , it is like the first time. It brings them both a lot of happiness like it did the very first time. My aunt has always been a devout Christian. Jim has always been an Atheist. They have always loved each other, and I know that Jim will never leave her. He'd sell his beloved Monocoupe (a plane he has owned for over 60 years) if that is what it took to treat Billie.
  3. My experience was the complete opposite of yours. After being diagnosed with HIV in 1995, I went into a deep depression. After a suicide attempts, I was hospitalized. Not once, but twice. My doctor was Dr. Giaonni. He diagnosed me with clinical depression. After learning that I owned a gun, he checked with my family to be sure that I did not have it in my possession. He also had them remove certain items and keep an eye on me. He also knew that I have done some skydiving and wanted to do some more. He suggested that I waited until he was sure that I was well enough to not be a danger to myself. I trusted the guy and did wait until the summer of 97 before going back. All the while he had me focus on reaching the goal of getting back the things I loved doing. He was the best thing I could have had at that time in my life. Definitely, no quack. Shame you didn't have a doctor like him. I remained under his care until late 97. If you don't mind me asking, why didn't you get a second opinion? 4. This is what I was thinking. But there's that one pesky problem of state law requiring the orange triangle. WTF is up with that? Evidently, a vehicle could have a solid wall of orange reflective tape on it or it could be all arranged to say "Back Off You Stupid Fuck" and it would be no good for state law. I did notice in pic one of the horse/buggy in the parking lot that the buggy had the triangle. The buggy in the first pic (same buggy in the second pic), also has running lights along the top and tail lights/flashers at the lower rear. In the second pic, the back of a headlamp can be seen, as well as the flasher (which has a blue lens.) They power the lamps with a car battery. I believe it is a law here in MO. that they be equipped as such for night road use. You don't see a lot of them at night, but when you do, they are hard to see without the orange triangle. Honestly, I much rather their belief be hurt than their bodies. If the issue is the shape of the reflector, it would be in the best interest of the State (monetary wise) to allow an exception for Amish buggies. I would think a lawsuit could be quite costly for the State. The Amish community is ripe with cash. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." 5. As often as I see them, I always get a kick out of them when I do. Pics are from a parking lot. My truck and a buggy. I really love being at a stop light next to one when on the bike. Kinda weird being on the bike next to a horse on main street. I sometimes think it would be cool to live without all of the comforts we have. But when I look at my bike, truck, skydive rig, while blasting my stereo I quickly come to my senses. Besides, those people should really write body deodorant into their list of laws. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
  6. I highly doubt that they are close to perfection. Amish sects have been involved in drug dealing, bootlegging, and other crimes. Some sects allow alcohol. Some years back, an Amish man, who was clearly intoxicated, was allowed to do a tandem at a DZ in this area. I was there. They TM is a good friend of mine. Even though I, and a few others, raised an objection to the jump, it happened anyways. Years ago, when I smoked pot, the Amish were the ones to get it from in PA.. Often saw them in bars outside of Harrisburg. I think they are no different than anyone else. You'll find good and bad in all sectors of society the world over. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
  7. I know, around here, coming up on one of their black buggies at night, they are near impossible to see, if not for the orange reflector. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
  8. A lot of good reading on the subject at this site: http://karisable.com/crmh.htm Personally, if a family member has been diagnosed with schizophrenia or bipolar, I would hope his or her gun could be removed. I would hope for their safety as well as for the safety of others. It's not a matter of "rights", it is a matter of preserving the life of a loved one. I much rather my brother or sister (or any other person) be safe and alive, than give in and allow them to walk around with a gun. I would much rather their right to own a gun be removed, than they fall into the percentage that do kill during an episode. It is irresponsible for gun rights advocates to say that a severely mentally ill person should be allowed to have a gun until they do kill someone. I'd rather a family member be alive and safe and that is no business of gun rights advocates. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
  9. I would imagine a few on this site will call this bullshit and nothing more than gun grabbing gun-o-phobes trying to squash their right to own a gun. They will, probably, claim if everyone had a gun this would had never happened. http://www.officer.com/article/10232250/mentally-ill-potential-violence "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." 10. I'll vote neither for nor against. Either way it goes, I'll not be responsible for anyone's misery. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
  11. Coreece, you have corrected me in a number of area in my post. Thanks. My reference that Jesus may have been a student of the Tao comes from the book The Great Tao. One school of thought is that there is a large gap in the life of Jesus that is unaccounted for. Where was he? What was he doing? What was he studying? There is similarities concerning Jesus and the Tao. Jesus is called "The Way". Tao, translated, means "The Way." Christianity concerns with connecting with "The One." Taoism concerns with connecting with "The One." Jesus may have very well studied Taoism. Taoism is just but one of the practices throughout Asia, before and after Jesus. As I said, Jesus could had studied a number of the many religions. We know that he was Jewish and must had, at one time, practiced Judaism. His thoughts may had been formed through interlacing the many religions. Who is to say that is not possible? But thought is universal. Has you stated, you have thought of an idea only to discover that it has already been done. I think we all have had thoughts that we thought were unique to our own self, only to discover that others are having the same thought. Who really knows if Jesus fashioned his sermons from many different practices, or if was an original. Hard to say. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
  12. And of course, that has nothing to do with people arming themselves when going to bars. But, of course, there has been a number of family members killed by another mistaking them for a burglar. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
  13. The mistakes made by the government allowed the hijackings to happen. The two wars are the blunder of our own government. One war was pushed aside to invade another country on a false pretense. Today, both of those countries are in major turmoil due to mistakes made by our own government. And you blame it on citizens not being allowed to carry loaded guns onto airliners? So you would allow terrorist the opportunity to carry loaded weapons onto an airliner and risk the outcome of a gunfight onboard inflight? The degree of illogic you display with your position on guns is astounding. And par for the course for a fanatic. 14. Cannot say I have. Cannot say I have. Nope, nor do I smoke or drink. Ahhh, goddamn it, I left my cigarettes at the bar! I typically worked on Saturday. I am going back to the company that I use to work for, on Sunday. If at all possible, I hope to work a railroad that will test on Saturday. Overtime rocks! Now, I know that you will claim that Sunday is the new sabbath. Did God give someone permission to change it from Saturday to Sunday? I doubt it. Man just did it. Shows that man can change anything they wish in the bible. I love my parents and have always respected them. Nope, I have never murdered any person. Whatever your buddy may think means nothing to me. I do not believe he is the son of any god. Your parenthesized statement, therefore, is moot. Sure have. I once stole a Bic lighter at a Target store in 1974. I got caught and my dad whupped my ass. I have never stolen anything since. I've never been married, but I have had a few wives. I cannot tell a lie, so yes, I have lied. I saw a 68 Camaro, a few days ago. Being that my first car in 1976 was a 68 RS, I really wish that car was mine. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
  15. No, I did not change any part of the question. You ask for "if you're an active CCW permit holder and normally carry, what reason can you think of that they would disarm just because they're at a bar? " My answer was "maybe if they might have a drink or two or three or four or five..." There are a number of places that do not allow weapons of any sort, yet there is a slim chance that something may happen. Can you carry a loaded weapon on to a commercial airplane? Gosh, how stupid you may feel if a hijacker commandeers the plane and kills every person onboard and you had to check your gun into possession of the airline after you carried it all day. Golly gee, you could had been a hero. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
  16. Voting is not a right. There is no such Federal Right that says so. The Voting Right Act states there is a fundamental right, yet voting remains a State granted privilege. Look it up. The lines are muddled in the interpretation of of 2nd amendment. Let's look at the amendment. There are several versions of the text of the Second Amendment, each with slight capitalization and punctuation differences, found in the official documents surrounding the adoption of the Bill of Rights.[5] One version was passed by the Congress,[6] while another is found in the copies distributed to the States[7] and then ratified by them. As passed by the Congress: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. As ratified by the States: A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. What, exactly, is "A well regulated militia"? Is it a body that trains together? Or can it be an individual? Can one person be a militia? I doubt it. I doubt that. Merriam-Webster defines "MILITIA" as: 1 a : a part of the organized armed forces of a country liable to call only in emergency b : a body of citizens organized for military service 2 : the whole body of able-bodied male citizens declared by law as being subject to call to military service Are you a member of a well organized militia? I'm not. We can go further and get into the semantics of the use of the word "People." Merriam-Webster defines "People" as: 1 plural : human beings making up a group or assembly or linked by a common interest 2 plural : human beings, persons —often used in compounds instead of persons —often used attributively 3 plural : the members of a family or kinship 4 plural : the mass of a community as distinguished from a special class —often used by Communists to distinguish Communists from other people 5 plural peoples : a body of persons that are united by a common culture, tradition, or sense of kinship, that typically have common language, institutions, and beliefs, and that often constitute a politically organized group 6 : lower animals usually of a specified kind or situation 7 : the body of enfranchised citizens of a state The amendment never refers to an individual, only a "militia" and "people." The amendment would be much more clear had they used "the right of a Person", referring to an individual, rather than "People", referring to a collective group, the militia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Amendment_to_the_Constitution_of_the_United_States But all of that beside, I am in favor of ownership and I am a gun owner. I'll hide my guns before I would ever turn them over to any government. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
  17. if you're an active CCW permit holder and normally carry, what reason can you think of that they would disarm just because they're at a bar? What a stupid question. Uhmmmm, let's see... maybe if they might have a drink or two or three or four or five... If the bar a person goes to is so damn dangerous they need to be armed, maybe the answer is not being armed, but finding a safer place to go. Do you honestly believe that every CCW permit holder will refrain from drinking while carrying? Of course, some in this thread believe that it is alright for a person to have a drink or two while carrying. Do you condone breaking the law as long as it is only a drink or two? 18. You should really attempt to actually read the book that you claim is truth. It so seems that Jesus was about healing the sick. It says so in the bible. Now I do suspect that you will re-interpret the scripture to reflect your own view. Have at it. “But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;” (Matthew 12:15, KJV esword) “Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.” (Luke 4:40, KJV esword) “And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all. ” (Luke 6:19, KJV esword) “And his fame went throughout all Syria: and they brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.” (Matthew 4:24, KJV esword) “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10, KJV esword) I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.” (Exodus 15:26) “And the Lord will take away from you all sickness, and will afflict you with none of the terrible diseases of Egypt which you have known, but will lay them on all those who hate you.” (Deuteronomy 7:15) “So you shall serve the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness away from the midst of you. No one shall suffer miscarriage or be barren in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days.” (Exodus 23:25) “He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” (Psalm 107:20) “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: who forgives all your iniquities; who heals all your diseases …” (Psalm 103:2) “For I will restore health to you and heal you of your wounds,” says the Lord. (Jeremiah 30:17) “O Lord my God, I cried out to You, and You have healed me.” (Psalm 30:2) He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds … Great is our Lord, and mighty in power …” (Psalm 147:3) “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:19) "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." 19. Every President, since Eisenhower, has relied the teleprompter, with the exception of G.W. Bush. Bush used large note cards due to his inability to follow the teleprompter. Ronald Reagan never gave a speech without a teleprompter. It is so inept to imply that Obama is the only President to rely on the teleprompter. 20. I fully agree with the outcome of the articles at that site. Those are people protecting themselves. The "stupid rednecks" Ryan speaks of are the idiots who have to let everyone know they have a gun. It's a waste of their time and resources when they are called out to confront the person who is brandishing. My nephew is the K-9 guy and works with the S.W.A.T. team and the drug task force. Typically, Ryan and Diesel (his dog) are the first to go through a door or around a corner. The last thing they need is armed citizens running around thinking they are helping the police. They are not helping. They are putting the police in greater danger. They are also putting themselves in danger of being shot by the police or the person the police is looking for. The last thing I want is to hear that Ryan has been killed in the line of duty by a suspect, and even worst, by some yahoo running run with a gun thinking he is helping the police. They really do prefer that a CCW holder stay inside their home when a suspect is being sought. CCW is not a right. It is a privilege much in the same way as a driver license, or even a hunting license is. You have a right to own a gun. You do not have a right to a CCW permit. If CCW was a right, a permit would not be required. As a driver license or a hunting license can be revoked, so can a CCW permit. The 2nd amendment does not give you the right to merely run around with a gun. It only allows the right to own a gun. Permits issued by the State grants the privilege to carry. Step outside the rules and that privilege will be revoked. As for another post, I never claimed that you quote the NRA. I use to be a member of the NRA. Was a member from the early 70s into the late 80s. It seemed that they went from protecting the right to own, to mostly fear-mongering, and constantly requesting that member send more money. John, I am all for ownership. Spent labor day weekend shooting a number of firearms, from a Glock 9mm, a shotgun, several 22s, to a Remington 270. I fully plan on buying more firearms when the money is there to do so. But, as a responsible gun owner, I realize that there are people who have no business having a gun. I realize that there is a need for certain laws to restrict certain people from gaining access. I realize that there are loopholes that need to be shut. I can walk into a gun show, here in Missouri, and purchase any type of firearm without ever being questioned. If I can do that, then a person with a lengthy felonious background can do the same. Surely, you are not in favor of gang bangers being able to buy assault weapons that will be used to kill people. Part of being responsible is realizing that the elements that can effect our rights need to be restricted. Realizing is in your favor. 21. You are correct. I just had this conversation with a cop who often trains with S.W.A.T. in the KC area. That cop is my nephew. According to him, it is extremely hard to hit a target that is moving in an adrenaline fueled situation. I've shot at a police range and did not do as well as I thought I would. Faster the pace, harder it is to hit the target. I asked Ryan what he thought of CCW holders. While he is in favor of CCW, police much prefer that they never pull their gun. He tells me that in all of his years on the force, he has yet to see where CCW holders made the situation better, only worst. Also, they are more of a danger to those in the immediate area as well as a danger to the officers. On a number of occasions when they were searching for a suspect, they would come across some yahoo with a gun and a permit, also searching for the suspect. If not for their training the permit holder could had been shot. Even worst, he fears one of these idiots will fire on them, the police. As Ryan tells me, the cops live with a lot of fear when on the job. Searching for a person who may have a gun is downright scarey. Add in some idiot who believes the 2nd amendment gives him the right to run around with a gun and the fear is even worst. As he tells me, CCW does nothing to reduce crime and it is usually stupid rednecks who have CCW permits. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." 22. I lived on a rail test car (see photo) for 10 years. I'm going back on the rails come Monday. I have been on nearly every inch of rail east of the Mississippi and on a large portion of rail west of the same. I have tested every inch of rail in Mexico and a good portion of the CP and CN in Canada. I have been through every town along those rails and have been out in a large number of those towns. You do not tie up in the best part of town. Rail yards are generally in the slum areas. In all of the years being in these parts of towns, I can honestly say that I have never encounter a situation where I needed a gun. I have lived in the rail yard in Harlem as well as the station yard in Jamaica, NY. Partied in the bars in the same area. Never had any need for a gun. The only incident that I saw was at the Lariat in Fort Worth. No gun would had prevented that guy from getting his throat slashed. According to the Bureau of Justice the chance of being a victim is extremely low. However, according to Texas DPS, you have a far greater chance of being a victim of assault that causes bodily injury from a family member. In fact the number one crime in Texas is family violence. In 2004 assault that causes bodily injury (convictions) exceeded assaults of the same outside the home. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/administration/crime_records/chl/convrates.htm 2004 - 14,159 vs 12,560 2005 - 15,117 vs 10,450 2006 - 17,473 vs 7,752 2007 - 18,507 vs 7,620 2008 - 20.239 vs 8,276 2009 - 20,290 vs 8,443 You have a higher probability of being harmed by a family member inside your home than you do by a stranger outside your home. You are in far greater need to arm yourself against family than anyone else. I am far from naive and uninformed. It is the paranoid that need to inform themselves of the actual facts and ignore the fear-mongering of the NRA. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
  23. Who defines "self destructive evil nature?" The people who wrote your bible? I don't harm anyone. I don't steal. I don't do anything criminal. I don't do anything that would even go against your book. Yet, you claim everyone has a "self destructive evil nature." That is an awful large claim to make. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
  24. Not necessarily an anti gun site as they favor personalized guns to stem the misuse of guns. I've been in bars throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico (working the rails), as well as bars overseas (Navy). I've seen bar fights and even been in one or two. Only twice have I ever seen anything escalate to the point of extreme violence. Once in Fort Worth at a place called The Lariat, someone got their throat slashed. Once in East St. Louis at a biker bar called Froggy's when a Saddle Tramp fired a shotgun through a window. Weapons of any type are banned at Froggy's. The owner, Mexican Joe, scans you with a wand before you can enter. He doesn't give a shit if your gun is legal or not. He simply does not allow any guns, knives, or any type of weapon in his bar or even his parking lot. If he hears you have a gun out on your bike, you're eightysixed. That is a great policy to have. If the places you go are so dangerous that you need a gun, maybe you should choose where you go more carefully. "...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black." Neil Young
  25. if you're an active CCW permit holder and normally carry, what reason can you think of that they would disarm just because they're at a bar? What a stupid question. Instead of implying that someone is stupid, explain why a person might need to be armed inside a bar. Is there a higher probability that they may have to shoot someone while there? I highly doubt it. CCW permit holders are just as likely to break the law as any other person. Studies in Texas shows this to be true. http://www.lcav.org/statistics-polling/gun_violence_statistics.asp Dangers of Permissive Carrying Concealed Weapons (CCW) Laws Shall-issue laws permitting the carrying of concealed firearms (CCW) (where law enforcement has no discretion in issuing a permit or license) do not appear to reduce crime, and no credible statistical evidence exists that such permissive CCW laws reduce crime. There is evidence permissive CCW laws generally will increase crime.59 A National Academy of Sciences report reviewing existing data on the effectiveness of firearm laws, including research purporting to demonstrate that concealed carry (also called “right-to-carry”) laws reduce crime, found that the “evidence to date does not adequately indicate either the sign or the magnitude of a causal link between the passage of right-to-carry laws and crime rates.”60 An analysis of Texas’ CCW law, (a law adopted in 1995 that overturned the state’s 125-year ban on concealed weapons), found that between January 1, 1996 and August 31, 2001, Texas license holders were arrested for 5,314 crimes, including murder, rape, kidnapping and theft.61 From 1996 to 2000, Texas CCW holders were arrested for weapons-related crimes at a rate 81% higher than that of the state’s general population age 21 and older.62 Since the Texas law took effect, more than 400 criminals – including rapists and armed robbers – had been issued CCW permits, and thousands of the 215,000 permit holders have been arrested for criminal behavior or found to be mentally unstable.63 The “largest category of problem licensees involve[d] those who committed crimes after getting their state” permits.64 Florida’s CCW system had, just in the first half of 2006, licensed more than 1,400 individuals who had pleaded guilty or no contest to felonies, 216 individuals with outstanding warrants, 128 people with active domestic violence injunctions against them, and six registered sex offenders.65 So, other than believing that they are there to protect everyone from criminals, what other reason would a person have to need a gun inside any establishment?
