  1. There is no debate. ....because there is no "other side".
  2. There is no debate. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  3. Bizarre argument. Our attitudes are the same as they always have been - out of sight, out of mind. The only thing that has changed is our ability to safely and reliably perform abortions. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  4. So you do disagree with Pajarito and Steveorino then? Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  5. Hospitals? Not sure. Every culture has been concerned with health. I'm not sure who began the first institutions dedicated to health. Universities? Depending on your definition, I would say Socrates / Plato / Aristotle, or even earlier. I would be surprised if ancient Babylon didn't have schools of higher learning. Great works of art in the renaissance? Since art is much older than the renaissance, I'm not sure it is a relevant question. It always surprises me how much some people are willing to specifically credit to religion. I saw a published email debate between Sam Harris and some religious US TV pundit who credited Christianity alone with developing (I shit you not) mathematics, astronomy, universities and (brace yourself) democracy! I hadn't realised jesus was alive in 500BC.... Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  6. You look outside and tell me that a tree is made of wood. I say, no, not really. To me, I think that tree is really made of jello. I don't care that those who've studied trees decide that it's made of wood. Neither of us is right or wrong. It's all just jello to me. Very bad analogy. You are pretending that the various authorities on the Bible all agree that its made out of wood. Thats just not true or the protestants would never even have split from the catholics Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  7. Sometimes you don't even have to rephrase a question to call 'bullshit' on a politician. Sometimes just repeating it is enough, a la the infamous Jeremy Paxman, Michael Howard "Did you threaten to overrule him?" interview (For the Yanks, Jeremy Paxman is a famous 'no-holds barred' UK political journalist) Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  8. 1) Sure, scripture points to - but does it explain (or hint at) why? 2) So is the fall (from eden?) the reason we are currently mortal and not eternal? Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  9. In early autumn wasps often get drunk after feeding from rotting apples. I don't think they seek it out but it does affect them. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  10. I think it may have happened to a glider pilot or two, they used to intentionally fly into massive cu-nims to break altitude records and occasionally their gliders would disintegrate from the turbulence / lightning strikes. I seem to recall a story connected to a fast jet pilot who ejected near one as well. Can't link to any though, and haven't heard about actual skydivers getting caught in Cu-nims either. 11. I was going somewhere with this conversation but cant remember what it was. Anyway, can I take it that you also envisage some other form of (for want of a better word) punishment in hell apart from that seperation from God? I'm not really too bothered with that, just slight curiosity. After thinking about it my real (twofold) question is why is there a seperate heaven and hell? Why sort out souls into the good and bad (or repentant and unrepentant if you will)? Second part, how do the two areas of creation gel together? Is the eternal side (heaven and hell) a neccessary repository for the souls created in the temporal universe or is it the other way round. Is this material, temporal universe specifically a place to test us before we 'graduate' to the eternal, non-corporeal realm of the afterlife? When I compare the two it seems that the eternal realm should be the 'higher' realm - more godlike as it were - so why this temporal world at all? I'm not looking for an argument with these questions, just an understanding of how (and if possible why) you think it all fits together in the long run. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  12. This issue has been rumbling away in the UK for a while now too, with the NHS funding alternative practisioners and the Royal College of Physicians opposing it. I think the best quote I've heard was something along the lines of "There really should be no such thing as 'alternative' medicine. If you can show, through clinical studies that it works then it is medicine. If you can't then it is not." Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  13. Actually I think he's on schedule for once. Its a shade under 9 months from the 2nd of March and he's decided that we can't produce a decent outcome! It seems now that 10 months is what it'll take to bodge it just enough to be able to leave. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  14. Can you get him to tattoo the apostrophe in? Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  15. It would be interesting to know what the constitution of the student association says about what grounds are sufficient for expulsion. The guild of students at my university just voted to deny all funding and related priviledges for the Christian Union students club. In our case the club breached the equal opportunities clauses by not allowing non-christians to join, which makes it a no brainer. Didn't stop the CU from stating their intention to sue. The one you posted doesn't sound so cut and dried - they better be sure they're not leaving themselves liable. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  16. To be honest, I'm not sure. I just happened to have my Black's Law Dictionary a foot and a half away, so I thought I would post an excerpt. Your interpretation seems reasonable, and I am inclined to agree, but like I said, I'm not sure. I doubt it. It would still be willfull and deliberate murder. Doesn't have to be premeditated. States, as far as I know, have statutory language in them that requires the element of premeditation for a 1st conviction. Black's LAw Dictionary is a general definition, not law. Even its definition makes me lean toward a degree of premeditation. Either way, I would expect this to be tried as a 2nd if no plea could be reached. There was a lawyer here who got drunk, drove fast and cut this 18YO college student in half, then left the scene. He was actually tried for 2nd and got the conviction. He was sentence to 11 years as I recall. So that should have been vehicular manslauter, but they were able to squeeze 2nd in there, so who knowns? 3 words: Arbitrary and capricious. Then I guess I'm wrong. Seems wierd to me though Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  17. ***In the Book of Matthew, 23:33, Jesus observes, "Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?” Jesus used the word gehenna, not hell, and his audience understood gehenna was an allegorical phrase likening the fate of the "generation of vipers" to that of garbage; Is that it? 18. Yeah, that makes sense. Yeah, I was trying to figure out a way to word it better. A modern warplane takes 10-15 years from conception to active service. The aerodynamic theory, electronics, systems, weaponry, materials, manufacturing techniques - every individual thing that goes into the design will have been surpassed by the time the aircraft makes it onto the front line. 19. Would you mind telling me where I can find it? Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  20. It is still current, I used the information from one many times in Iraq. It is currently still flying yes, but the plane itself is not current. It still is an awsome plane but it stopped being current on May 1st 1960 with a lucky missile shot. Every modern warplane is obsolete by the time it enters service. Also, the U-2 that flies today is not the U-2 that got shot down in 1960 Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  21. The greek word translated as destroy can be used figurative as well as literally. Again, you fundamental atheist are no different than fundamental Baptist. My point is that it could not be used as a source for the idea as hell being apart from god, not because it says something slightly different but because it does not say it at all.
