  1. And there you have it Collective hallucinations? Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  2. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  3. Umm, US declared war on Japan - Germany declared war on US, US returned the favour, right? Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  4. Nice metaphor - but thats not at all what happened to Roman democracy. The mob could no more vote themselves cut price grain than we could vote ourselves a tax cut. . Ummm - didn't the US vote itself a tax cut in 1980, 1984, 2000 and again in 2004? Through a referendum? Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  5. Nice metaphor - but thats not at all what happened to Roman democracy. The mob could no more vote themselves cut price grain than we could vote ourselves a tax cut. And the Barbarians destroyed the western empire 500 years after the civil wars destroyed democracy in Rome. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  6. Well thats an incredibly sad (and slightly dishonest) way of looking at things. Living a 'good' life does not neccessitate being perfect or 'sinless'. Its not a binary scale, you can slip up once or twice and still be a good person (not now Paj). What sort of way to go through life is it thinking "Oh well I may be horrible and unworthy but at least I can suck up to this bloke and he'll give me a free pass." Thats just depressing! 7. Well, I don't know anything about the Vatican and it's alleged lies (or anything else). But the idea of blaming Rome for incidences of sexually-transmitted AIDS or any other STD is pretty sad. When people in South Africa prematurely die of AIDS symptoms because they have been taking wild garlic and sweet potatoes instead of HIV medication then its fair to blame the SA Health minister for spouting such absolute garbage. When the Vatican uses its huge influence in high risk areas to stop people from using condoms, and spreads deliberate lies and junk science about the efficacy of condoms in preventing HIV transmission then it is fair to blame them as well. 8. I guess the same could be said of the people who rant about all our civil rights being taken away and who claim we're unbearable close to becoming a Fascist police state. Explain how that fits? Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  9. So, to paraphrase, "The existence of a God as the creator is a theory with a lot of support, because it could account for everything observed. OTOH the continued lack of any observations of God is causing much head scratching and soul searching, leading to the present debate as to whether or not there is a God. No one will accept it as true until it can be demonstrated." Can you make verifiable predictions based on a god hypothesis? Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  10. I'm not sure whether to or . When I think about the Vatican's staggeringly brazen lies on the subject I feel exactly the same way, except without the option of laughing. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  11. Too late, John. I've caught you in a misspelling. That clearly shows the lie in everything you've said in this thread - your clumsy attempts to disguise your perfidy notwithstanding. I fixed it 6 minutes before you posted - thus showing that it was a typo and not a spelin eror. 7:08 – 7:03 = 5 minutes. Not 6. 5. If you've lost your ability to do simple arithmetic (and apparently you have), how can we possibly trust your exit separation calculations? This is serious. It could cost lives. It shows as edited 7:02 on my screen, you've lost the ability to read Roman numerals VII:II? I thought we used Hindu/Arabic numerals? Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  12. What the hell is that about? Is Santa 7 years old? Everyone should know that Father Christmas much prefers mince pies, brandy butter and a couple of glasses of sherry. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  13. Ah so are we now taling about generic faith in a generic god, or are we looking at specific religions? Religions use god to build theories on creation and other scientific matters that are demonstrably false. I am also not quite sure how applying logic to the god assumption leads to doctrine like "homosexuality is evil" and "everyone who doesn't believe what you believe is evil"? It might exist, or it might not. General relativity or gravitational theory might be slightly wrong instead. Dark matter is a theory with a lot of support, because it would neatly account for observed behaviour of galaxies. OTOH the continued lack of any observations of dark matter is causing much head scratching and soul searching. No one will accept it as true until it can be demonstrated. 15. I'm sorry what? Why do mutually beneficial laws involve a tacit admission of another force? That badly needs explanation. You can sit down and draw millions of triangles and they will all fit the axiom. You can draw as many parrallel lines as you want And they will all be exactly parrallel. It doesn't matter if you want the axiom to be true or not you can show that it holds for every example you draw. Draw me god on any scale and show that its true. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  16. The Jews as a race? They're just people, most are probably quite nice, some are probably complete arseholes - just like any other group. The Jewish religion? Centred around worship of one of the most petty, spiteful, insecure psychos thats ever been committed to the page. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  17. Unfortunately for you, that will never, ever happen. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  18. Hey Jon, First, biblical philosophy goes back 2/3k years (NT/OT), many cultures had prohibitions on those behaviours prior to that time. Hell, several city states in Greece even had radical democracy before Judeism began to spread further than Israel. Secondly, as to the non-religionism of creation, here are a few quotes from Phillip Johnson, the founder of ID. ID is the theory specifically designed to bring creationism into the school environment. "I have built an intellectual movement in the universities and churches that we call The Wedge, which is devoted to scholarship and writing that furthers this program of questioning the materialistic basis of science." ..."Now the way that I see the logic of our movement going is like this. The first thing you understand is that the Darwinian theory isn't true. It's falsified by all of the evidence and the logic is terrible. When you realize that, the next question that occurs to you is, well, where might you get the truth?" ..."I start with John 1:1. In the beginning was the word. In the beginning was intelligence, purpose, and wisdom. The Bible had that right. And the materialist scientists are deluding themselves." "What I am not doing is bringing the Bible into the university and saying, "We should believe this." Bringing the Bible into question works very well when you are talking to a Bible-believing audience. But it is a disastrous thing to do when you are talking, as I am constantly, to a world of people for whom the fact that something is in the Bible is a reason for not believing it." ... "You see, if they thought they had good evidence for something, and then they saw it in the Bible, they would begin to doubt. That is what has to be kept out of the argument if you are going to do what I to do, which is to focus on the defects in their [the evolutionist's] case—the bad logic, the bad science, the bad reasoning, and the bad evidence." "We are taking an intuition most people have (the belief in God) and making it a scientific and academic enterprise. We are removing the most important cultural roadblock to accepting the role of God as creator." "Our strategy has been to change the subject a bit so that we can get the issue of intelligent design, which really means the reality of God, before the academic world and into the schools." 19. Yup! But I appreciate the answer anyway I don't wear labels ... "born again" in our world today is more a label than a description. Is that better? Yeah its cool. I get what you mean, even if the specifics are a bit beyond me Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  20. Yup! But I appreciate the answer anyway Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  21. Steve, are you a Born Again Christian? I was under the impression that where your beliefs differ from Paj's it's because he was BA and you're something different and more moderate? Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  22. A while ago new Scientist published a few short articles about the disparity between federal funding for researching cures and vaccines for biological weapons like anthrax, which has killed less than a handful of US citizens in the last 5 years and diseases like Flu, H5N1 and other 'pandemic' threats which kill or could kill thousands. I can't remember the figures but the Bio-weapons research was getting disparately large amounts of funding. Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  23. um... this definition doesn't require that the force entirely counter that of gravity... But it does say perpendicular to the external flow, which excludes camera wings (while falling down the tube) which produce drag parallel to the external flow approaching the body. Doesn't exclude components of tracking and wingsuit lift though Do you want to have an ideagasm?
  24. Ooh, ooh, I have one of those! (shamelessly stolen) God: Man, I have a great gift for you, it is called free will! Man: Thanks, but I don't think I need any right now, I'm getting along pretty well without it. God: Well you're having it anyway. Man: Oh, ok. So, uh, what do I do with it? God: Nothing. You must continue to follow all my commands or I will cast you into the fire! Man: Riiiiight. Oh well, disregard the above then! Do you want to have an ideagasm?
