  2. Is he still jumping? For anyone too lazy to find the bio: Hobbies I have been an instructor all my life. I was a Red Cross volunteer for ten years starting in 1972. During this time I was an Advanced First Aid instructor, a CPR instructor, and a Water Safety Instructor Trainer. I was also a Scoutmaster for a total of ten years between 1977-97 helping out with four different troops. I learned to swim when I was four, and I made my first scuba dive when I was twelve. (Don't ask!) I got my scuba certification in Florida in 1970. My first regulator was a double hose regulator - which I still have. I worked as a scuba instructor for most of the time I was in college. When wrestling with sharks became boring, I started jumping out of "perfectly good airplanes." I made my first jump on Sunday, May 7th, 1989 at 1:35 in the afternoon - not that it made a lasting impression. By November of that year I earned my Jumpmaster rating, and was eventually qualified to be a tandem master and an AFF instructor. I also served as a Safety & Training Advisor for my regional director. (AFF = Accelerated FreeFall) ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? 3. Ok, try this as a system. It would be voulontarry, but listed under your username. -A few regulars from around the country are given the ability to do the known /unknown thing for people. -They do this by filling in a form for that person. -Once three people fill out the form for someone they are made "known". -after ten people fill out the form for them they are given the ability to fill in forms for others. -If they feel the person is an "expert" in a field they check that box. Expert status would have strict guidelines and be made rarely available. -The persons who filled in forms for you would be in your profile, so abuse could be tracked down quickly. Having a person's location would make abuse quickly obvious. ie: there's no tm named Betty Spegetti in NH and lots of people would know that. form: Username = _____________ .... Location = ____________ .... Expert = Rigging __ ......... Freeflying __ ......... AFF __ ......... BASE __ ......... CReW __ ......... History __ For example: Billbooth status=known location = Florida, USA Rigging, Tandums, History ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? 4. I think the idea behind what he is referring to (and possibly misunderstanding) is especially when using the one-hand-on-each-handle method, most people will unconsciously let muscle memory take over and pull cutaway then reserve. The problem is that if your hand slips off of the cutaway without pulling it, then you pull the reserve handle, because that is what your left hand does when your right arm reaches extension. That is one of the biggest arguments of the two-hands-per-handle folks. I'm a one-hand-on-each-handle person myself, but always put the mental image of the main leaving when I dirtdive a low speed mal. not crap..chink..chink , but, waveoff..pull..spinningcrap..chink..fall..chink..ahhh ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? 5. I asked this exact question in EMT-basic class. I am not an expert, So please correct me if nessecary. Thats why I brought this subject up in the first place. A: Do you really, really, really need to take it off? (ie airway or lots of bleeding) B: Maintain c-spine, have a helper hold the victim's head near the back of the jawbone. C: Slip both hands up inside over the person's ears and push outwards and up to push the helmet off rather than pull. D: They now make little air pumped pillow thingies that you slip in above the person's head and inflate to get a helmet off. ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? 6. I wholeheartedly agree. By saying safety day class, I meant familiarizing skydiving medical professionals with the specific model at the dz, as there are several different types. I just couldn't imagine holding manual traction for any extended period of time. Anyone want to give an opinion on whether it is better to do manual traction or wait for the ambulance.(lets say we're talking about a trained EMT, plenty of help, isolated femur fracture with deformity and swelling) People have brought up some great points about legal issues. I am so glad to see that a few dzs have policies about first response. I fear that that isn't true of most dzs though. ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? 8. propilot wrote: There is a very high proportion of medical professionals in the sport. So many EMTs, Nurses, Doctors are skydivers that there is a high chance that someone trained would be there. A femur fracture is one injury where a $100 piece of equipment can mean the difference between deadly bloodloss and only massive bloodloss. Training on any specific variation of the device would be essential (great safety day class.) Good judgment must be used in any injury. You don't see skydivers putting people on long backboards and running injured people to a pickup truck even though the equipment is there. This is a device that brought the fatality rate from femur fractures in WWI from 80% to 20%. I do think that there would be issues with the ambulance service using equipment that was already in place, but maybe this is something to bring up with them. Any dz worth it's salt should have a good working relationship with the first responders in the area. At my old DZ the head EMT muckety muck guy for the town was delighted to be asked by us to give a safety day briefing to the dz about first aid for a critical injury. We learned a lot about what info to give and how to get the resources there as fast as possible. He learned a lot about skydiving gear and mechanisms of injury. I'm mostly referring to the DZs where help wouldn't arrive for 30 minutes or more. It just seems like a long time for that thigh muscle to be spasming and moving those bones around. ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? 11. Another great way to get people out is to get someone to write up their first jump story for the Bat (school paper.) Include details, like cost and what the fjc was like. Target it to someone who would jump if they knew more about it. A positive piece is garonteed to convince people that they can do it too. Talk to the photographers too, because a nice swoop with a colorful canopy makes an irresistible cover shot. I have a cover shot of my husband on the Eagle (A&M town newspaper) and we got more than one Bat cover while I was there. It is sure to make anyone interested in skydiving pick up the paper. ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? 12. Howdy Aggie. I was an officer of the tamusc for a few years, and here is what worked for us; Cheap colorful flyers with the tearoff phone numbers at the bottom. Write SKYDIVE really big with some info about first jump course, price and whatnot. Make up a few with different sayings, so people who notice them keep noticing them. come SKYDIVE with us We're the Texas A&M Skydiving Club Take a first jump course at AOT and jump the same day. Static-line $150 or Accelerated freefall $250 every weekend 10 a.m. Stay for first jump stories at the bonfire at sunset. skydive.tamu.edu Call ###-#### for more info (then the little dangly things with) SKYDIVE info Bob ###-#### People who will jump usually are interested in skydiving and will notice a flyer about it if you make the word skydive big and clear. A big roadblock for many people who would otherwise be skydivers is not knowing that it is pretty easy to make their first jump. Talking to an enthusiastic club member will work out a lot of the feer of sounding stupid questions. Static-line and AFF are the way to go. We almost never got a student to come back after a tandum. Maybe we were doing something wrong, but we just didn't. There is a real sense of accomplishment after doing aff or sl that we just didn't see with tandums. If you can combine that with getting the student to feel welcome (no trouble at aot for that) and getting them to stay for first jump stories and beerlight, they really get a taste of why to continue in the sport. When they call for info be sure to tell them about the first jump stories at the end of the night, so people plan on staying. A little effort with getting everyone to stop and gather for it goes a long way. ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? 14. Here are two ideas on this topic I've just had. Many people may not want their identities public, but it would be nice to have their status as a real person verified. In other words, the moderators would have their name and info, but their public profile would only have what they wish to show. I have noticed many people, for example MakeItHappen and myself, who have chosen to not put their names in their profile. Secondly I think a modest fee or required donation for identity verification (for lack of better term) would be a reasonable way to help prevent overwhelming demand, and provide compensation for the work done to check info. ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? 15. I sure as hell will look at advice differently from Bill Booth or John LeBlanc and the like differently than I would skyguy434. And I never said having any sort of a ticket makes a person suddenly less of an idiot, but it will give you an idea of where they are coming from experience wise. There was recently a thread about people with false profiles in the rigging forum, And it does make a big difference if you lie about your qualifications. My point really was more about distinguishing the anonymous from the real people. Anonymity (god it just took my brain way too long to drag that word up) almost always brings out the worst in some people. I don't think I need to give examples of that, do I? There are a lot of instances on this site when trust matters even if it is just whether you respond to a question or not because you suspect it is a troll. Let's say Joe Smith says that his sister has cancer and is blind, but she wants to do a jump. Are people going to put more effort into researching options for this chick if they know that Joe is a real guy than if they don't? It is just a little way of taking some of the anonymity out if you wish to. I still think it's a good idea, but I can't argue with sangiro that it would be a lot of work to set up and maintain. Maybe with a little tweeking we could come up with something worthwhile. Hell, thats why this section is called "suggestions and feedback", not "do this now". ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? 18. From slashdot.org Jet-powered Nausicaa Glider Project SuperElectric writes "As reported on slashdot.jp, Opensky is a project led by media artist Kazuhiko Hachiya to implement a working, jet-powered version of Moewe, the vehicle (pic) that the heroine rides on in "Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind". They've successfully test-flown (.mov, 8.6MB) a 1/2 scale model, and are moving into phase 2, which includes interviewing for test pilots (women only!). Can anybody knowledgeable in experimental aeronautics speculate on how doable this is? While it's not designed for general production (riders must be less than 50 kg/120 lbs), this would certainly beat Segway any day!" Looks a little poorly thought out. If you just added a cockpit and seat it would be great, oh wait, that would be an airplane. ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? 21. Recent issues with people lying about their identities or their qualifications and ratings has compromised trust in these forums. Unfortunately it has made a generous and helpeful group of people turn skeptical. This situation has made me think of something that might be useful. What if everyone had an identity rating that only the moderators could alter. It could go next to the Newbie/OldHand Status 0=Suspect 1=no info 2=vouched for by a 3 3=known Everyone would start at 1 when they sign up. Then moderators could change the number to 3 if they knew the person was who they said they are, 2 if a known person vouched for them, and 0 if they were thought to be a troll. Having an identity verified would be great when you want to trust advice or information. For example you would know that billbooth is really Bill Booth when he posts and not just some wacko who registered the name. Newbies would have an additional tool to evaluate advice if they could know that a person is real and does have a rigger's rating or whatnot. Just an idea ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari? Spelling and grammar errors are left as an exercise for the reader.
  22. Ok, this is like the third time today I've seen a skydiver write something about "go in for surgery". Geesh would you all word it differently for cripes sake. 23. Turtlespeed, You rock for doing what you did. Sounds like you did a great job too. I was at the seen of a car vs pedestrian accident and had no idea what to do except to designate one person to call 911. We put pressure on a bleeding headwound and found a medic alert bracelet, but I really felt helpless and unsure of what to do till the EMTs got there. That was a horrible feeling, so I took an EMT course. I learned the basics which really helped put the incident behind me, and made me feel like if I'm ever in a situation like that again at least I will have some idea of how to help till the professionals get there. I would highly recommend it to everyone. It's a step past First Aid and CPR which don't quite teach you how to approach a major accident. Now that I started talking about it here is a brief list of the steps that I got out of the class. Maybe someone will get something out of it. Think of your and other rescuers safety first. The last thing the emts need is more patients. Think of traffic, downed power lines, fire, chemicals, and whatever got that first guy. ABCDEs Airway- is air able to get to the lungs Breathing- Are they breathing? Circulation- Heartbeat? Dangerous Bleeding- Stop any huge loss of blood EMS- Make sure 911 has been called Leave them where they are unless they are in danger where they are (fire traffic etc) or unless you have to move them to address the above ABCs (ie, move them to be flat n their back for CPR, you might do damage by moving them, but they will be dead anyway without breathing) If they must be moved just try to keep the back, neck and head straight in line like it is once they get put on the backboard. This is to prevent any further damage to the spinal cord. Try to have them keep their head still. Get any info that the docs might meed if they were to lose conciouness later. Name, who to notify, any special medical concerns, alergys to meds, last time they ate or drank anything, etc I don't know if that helps any, but I would love to hear what a real EMT thinks. ~Cindy~ Quantum materiae materietur marmota monax si marmota monax materiam possit materiari?
