  2. psssst... you already got the deal you don't have to suck up to her any more. But yes, she is very nice, even to fools like me.
  3. developing and printing is more than half the game in b&w. It's easy and you'll never want another person touching your film again after you've tried it. You're really missing out if you never get to develop your own film, use an enlarger or print to fiber paper. That's the best part! I'd suggest finding an intro to b&w photography course at your local college's art center. They'll have a darkroom available to rent for cheap, with use of their chemicals. Get a good, cheap prime lens (no zoom), maybe a 50mm 1.7 (minolta right?). You can probably pick one up for $30. You'll learn faster that way without the zoom and you'll also get shots that you could never get on any consumer zoom lens. Shoot on manual, even if you use the built in light meter. Bracket your shots. Take notes on every shot you take. Buy a loupe to inspect your negatives. Stick to one film for a while, kodak tri-x or ilford hp-5 are good films that are easy to develop. T-max is good but harder to develop consistently. Play with pushing and pulling film, expose for the shadows, develop for the highlights. Read ansel adam's books. What's important in B&W is the same as what's important in any type of photography. Make sure you're happy with your shots. Have fun! Make sure the b&w film in your camera is not c-41 process b&w. 17. How'd I miss this? You probably subconsciously blocked this memory because deep down inside you knew it would be a bad idea! But back to the topic... How do you know if a packjob is good or not? I mean once you roll it all up there's no way to see what's going on inside. I'm pretty sure my packjobs aren't the greatest but heck they've all opened so far. How about this: have you ever thought a packjob sucked but jumped it anyway and had to chop? Have you ever thought a packjob was absolutely perfect and had to chop? Is there really a correlation between the quality of a packjob and malfunctions? I guess it's hard to know because if we were *certain* that a particular packjob would end in a cutaway the rig would most likely get repacked... 18. Hey Hollister peepz. Thanks for all the fun jumps and hospitality! I had a great time there this weekend jumping with all of you. I would have been a more active participant in the post-skydiving activities but unfortunately i'm not feeling so well... I was also very glad to observe something that is really a part of my japanese-ancestry. It was great to see the ancient-japanese ritual of the sake-bomb being preserved and re-enacted so enthusiastically by all you guys. p.s. if you don't know/remember who I am, i'm the only 6'3" japanese guy within 40 miles of myself, unless I pissed you off then i'm the other guy that kept saying he had no job. 19. Oh come on! I won't tell anyone! I promise. Oh no! Did I miss out on all the fun?!? Anyway, is anyone going to head to hollister tomorrow? It'll be my first time there so I guess i'm owing beer... Gotta go... plaything needs to spank me Feel the hate... Photos here
  20. Hey what are friends for after all? All I ask is that you face dubya and yourself towards the camera. Gotta go... plaything needs to spank me Feel the hate... Photos here
  21. No doubt what I would do here. I'd shoot whatever I had in my camera at that time and keep shooting 'till there was no film left, while yelling at jsaxton to save him. Then as jsaxton is trying to save him i'd reload probably with some 800 speed color film like fujicolor press or NPZ. Might even consider using NPH as skin tones are rendered beautifully. I'd then take pictures of the rescue attempt to get another pulitzer prize winning photo of the rescue attempt. If they both get into trouble, i'd load yet another roll of film and keep shooting the greek tragedy unfolding in front of me. It'd be a tough choice at this point for film selection. Do I want low contrast to render the skintones properly or do Iwant to pump up the color saturation to add emotion to the shot? Hmmmm well if i'm sure there are a few prize-winning shots already, I may consider risking it with a slower speed slide film like fuji velvia or kodak EPP to really juice up the colors and start playing with the angles a bit. Do I have a flash unit with the camera? If I had a digital camera I would shoot in RAW format. Gotta go... plaything needs to spank me Feel the hate... Photos here
  22. Are you suggesting I try a new landing pattern? I think Moto got pond scum in the general landing area. Then he tried to microwave his wet shoes and socks! Eeeeewww. Oh sooooooooo wrong! I am puddle scum #1 and it was only my shoes that were allegedly in the microwave! Gotta go... plaything needs to spank me Feel the hate... Photos here

  24. Autofocus is done with the lens wide-open. The kit lens is f/3.5 wide open at 18mm, vs f/2.8 for the 20mm, or ~60% more light to auto-focus with. You can see the effect of a smaller aperture by when using your 20mm lens. Set the aperture to 3.5 and hit the DOF preview button on your camera. You'll see why the autofocus has a hard time with the ef-s lens. In fact, if you can get a hold of a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 lens, try shooting with that. You'd be amazed at the kind of shots you can get in poor lighting conditions. Gotta go... plaything needs to spank me Feel the hate... Photos here
