This is VERY normal. My 11th jump was a cliff strike in Mexico, took 2 years off. My 77th jump was a wicked building strike, took 2 months off but returned a VERY different BASE jumper. That was all 300 very nervous/fun jumps ago and I now pick and choose what,when and where I will jump VERY carefully. It is occasionally frustrating to see my "300 jumps with no problems" buddies huck gainers effortlessly and without care while I go handheld and freakout. Don't try and compare where your comfort level is to some idea of where you think it should be. Fear levels vary from situation to situation, and person to person. Like folks are saying, the option to walk off is ALWAYS an option, and is a sure fire way to stay alive. This fear may not ever totally go away, in fact, if you spank an object and it doesn't wake up your senses, you might then need to really think about quitting BASE. Good luck, and good topic as well. jimmyh, getting my BASE # was one of the coolest accomplishments ever for me. Funny thing though, you make it sound like BASE #'s, Duran Duran and Ronald Reagan are all part of the same tired old scene. Sorry you feel that way even if you aren't. And sorry you're breeding endless new jumpers in SoCal, most of the rest of the States have growth more in control I think. Are you coming to the GoFast Games so I can see this hotshit new futuristic sport you're apart of. No Stich, never jumped in Lubbock. I was an Austin boy back when nobody BASE jumped within a 4hr. radius. As someone who got into BASE the "wrong way" as well. I had a VERY rewarding and lucky first jump, and then shattered my ankle in 6 places on my second. I was jumping skydiving gear on a 400' tower and had 46 skydives and was just soooo damned hard up to get into the sport. The difference was, I had no mentors available in my part of Texas and internet guidance was not in existence yet. Take advantage of the cool folks you got in the U.K. and try not to burn any bridges. It's a really small community worldwide and if you wanna get invited to the cool shit, you might wanna settle down a little and start buying ALOT of beer for people. Lot's of beer and an attitude change can fix anything. Trust me. And congrats on not killing yourself right out the starting gate. Every year at the GoFast Games, the bridge folks tell us about any suicides that might have happened that year, and I always think that that is way too tall of a bridge if I was gonna do that.
