  1. Getting effective firearm education and safety training only after you've purchased a gun, doesn't address the kids 10-19 years old that are living in central cities unable to break the cycle of violence that has plagued them for 50+ years. The CDC has found that these kids are extremely over represented - that their firearm homicide rate exceeds that of all age groups. Last year the CDC did a study in Delaware amid a 45% increase in shootings in Wilmington, and a homicide rate that outpaced every other state. (the majority of which have been significantly decreasing in the last 10-15 years, btw) Anyway, the study showed that 15.1% of the offenses were committed by those under 18, and 39.4% were 18-25. So we see why it's imperative to educate and address the violent culture when these kids are at a very young age, as addressed in the CDC report linked in the post to Kallend Above. Once they make it past 25, the numbers drop dramatically to 16.5% and then 6% for 35-39 year olds, and 8.3% for ages 40+ Also, the good thing about addressing the violent culture is that it simultaneously addresses the 30-40% of homicides committed without firearms that gun control nuts have the tendency to ignore as well. . . http://dhss.delaware.gov/dhss/dms/files/cdcgunviolencereport10315.pdf Never was there an answer....not without listening, without seeing - Gilmour
  2. Ya, it figures that the guy who bitches most around here about gun crime is only willing to invest 30 seconds into coming up with solutions that fail to address the heart of the problem - big surprise. It kinda makes it seem like you're not really interested in solving the problem as much as you are in political divisiveness and sticking it to the conservatives. Thankfully there are objective people that actually do take the time to determine the problem and provide real solutions to address the issues surrounding our violent culture: From CDC: "National and state prevention programs directed at reducing firearm violence should focus on youths, particularly in central cities, to reduce the burden of firearm-related mortality in the United States. Initiatives designed to reduce violent deaths in urban areas can draw upon a growing evidence base for effectively addressing behaviors that underlie violence involving youths." "A concerted effort has been under way during the past few decades to build the evidence base for youth violence prevention, and a number of effective strategies are now available for preventing behaviors that underlie firearm violence involving youths. These strategies include programs that: 1) enhance youth skills and motivation to behave nonviolently and resolve conflicts peacefully, 2) promote positive relationships between youth and adults (e.g., parenting and mentoring programs), and 3) influence the social, environmental, and economic characteristics of schools, workplaces, and neighborhoods in ways that can reduce the likelihood of youth violence (e.g., encouraging social connectedness and facilitating economic opportunities) 4)In addition, new approaches are being tried and tested, such as CeaseFire, which seeks to prevent street violence, particularly shootings, through outreach, conflict mediation, and the changing of community norms that support violence." The report also suggests direct measure to reduce firearm homicide/suicide such as safe storage, safer design and legislative efforts, However, it goes on to say that "most of these direct measures have not been evaluated adequately, making it difficult to know their effectiveness in reducing firearm-related deaths and injuries" http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/pdf/wk/mm6018.pdf Never was there an answer....not without listening, without seeing - Gilmour
  3. The majority of gun related homicides in the U.S are committed in areas that seem to be more representative of 2nd and 3rd World Countries. Cities like St. Louis, Detroit, Baltimore , New Orleans are the only "First World" cities on a list of 50 with the highest murder rates in the world. Cities like Detroit and East St.Louis, IL can often be seen on lists of the most dangerous places on the planet - usually listed somewhere between Karachi, Pakistan and Baghdad. 60% of gun related homicides are committed in the top 50 largest metro areas - and the closer you get to the heart of the main cities, the gun homicide rates are about 2-4x higher than that of the entire metro area. ...and that doesn't include the smaller poverty stricken areas like Saginaw, MI that recently made it to a list of the most dangerous cities in America. The CDC reports and other relevant data can be found here: http://www.citylab.com/crime/2012/12/geography-gun-violence-cities-versus-metros/4044/ Never was there an answer....not without listening, without seeing - Gilmour
  4. Here is some corroboration to your OP published 22 June 2016. http://thefederalist.com/2016/06/22/america-is-awash-in-guns-and-crime-is-at-record-lows/ Yeah, sure Are you able to articulate (put into words) the part of the article that you object to, and why? Those numbers are still consistent with the fact that the gun homicide rate is significantly lower compared to that of 20 years ago when there were less guns per person. 5. WHAT YOU POSTED was a cut and paste of a spin job from Guns and Ammo written in 2013. From the CDC report: Between the years 2000-2010 firearm-related suicides significantly outnumbered homicides for all age groups... Guns and Ammo point summary: The vast majority of gun-related deaths are not homicides, but suicides... Those manipulative spin-doctoring bastards! Is one sentence ALL you could find that was accurate? From the CDC report: There is empirical evidence that gun turn in programs are ineffective... Spin doctors: Gun buyback/turn-in programs are “ineffective” in reducing crime... Would you care to explain how that is inaccurate, or provide something constructive in terms of how we can make these programs more effective? Maybe you and your buddies can take up a collection as there might be a few guns I'd be willing to part with for the right price - maybe it'll help save a couple squirrels, or maybe even a deer! 12. A Milkmaid had been out to milk the cows and was returning from the field with the shining milk pail balanced nicely on her head. As she walked along, her pretty head was busy with plans for the days to come. "This good, rich milk," she mused, "will give me plenty of cream to churn. The butter I make I will take to market, and with the money I get for it I will buy a lot of eggs for hatching. How nice it will be when they are all hatched and the yard is full of fine young chicks. Then when May day comes I will sell them, and with the money I'll buy a lovely new dress to wear to the fair. All the young men will look at me. They will come and try to make love to me,—but I shall very quickly send them about their business!" As she thought of how she would settle that matter, she tossed her head scornfully, and down fell the pail of milk to the ground. And all the milk flowed out, and with it vanished butter and eggs and chicks and new dress and all the milkmaid's pride. Do not count your chickens before they are hatched. 13. You don't know what my point was. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure it was this "With this and the CDC thread, you've ruined the day for kallend and billvon et al." Seems pretty straightforward to me. Was there some secret trick to it? Don't think so. If you think that the OP in this thread said anything that would give K and BV pause, then you really have no clue what the pro-renewable energy argument is about. ...but billvon posts a lot of information about renewables and climate change to promote that argument. Don't get me wrong - much of that information is extremely valuable. Some of his best arguments are the simple ones - like how there are better uses for oil, rather than just burning it up for fuel given the possible alternatives. However, If there's anything in the OP that should give him pause, it would be to stop trying to spread awareness by using arbitrary alarmist bullshit. A large part of the article talked about how the SCC was calculated. One year it's about $30 per ton, but then several years later it all of a sudden doubles - and BV has used that information coming from the agencies listed in the OP to support his argument. Now he may say, "well, with better science, we gain a deeper understanding of the problem and can formulate better models that give us more accurate figures." - fine, but you'll still need a period of consistency in order for that to become more reliable. ...and it's not just stuff like that. I think the last time I talked with him about climate change, he was posting all these ridiculous heat indexes of 165F or 175F not realizing (or deliberately ignoring) that the charts and calculators he linked to specially stated that numbers out side of the range listed are meaningless - and they were. He was just simply using them to alarm people. If one has to insult the intelligence of others in order to promote their argument, then perhaps it really isn't as strong as they think. I just don't see how it helps the cause in the long run. . . . . . as for Kallend, I think Ron was obviously referring to the CDC thread that lists plenty to give him pause - no explanation needed there. 16. You can spend that much on 6 packs over here for the rare tasty stuff, but the ABV will be anywhere from 10-15%. This stuff is a mere 4.9% - fucking hell. 17. Ya, I've been to quit a few truck stops during my travels across the country. They all seem pretty clean nowadays. Good, because that wasn't my intention. You seem to have a decent gauge on my facetious tone that tends to get me trouble with some other posters - which is understandable, I guess. 20. Those areas are a lost cause - the buildings were abandoned long before I came around and the neighborhoods were being burnt down on devil's night while I was coming of age. It's doubtful that those recently off the boat ever set foot there. One of my favorite past times was just cruising around taking photography of urban decay and contrasting it with contemporary development in our hope of rebuilding. 23. I can sort of see the point you claim to be making. You picked a very poor way to make it. Right, but the part you're missing is how your accusation that she is white trash was in equally poor taste, if not more. See the thing is, is that you can spout off whatever bullshit you want and nobody bats an eyelash - but then I come along and say that maybe she's just an angry immigrant, (which btw is probably a more accurate statement) and you guys flip out and jump the train to bigotville U.S.A, even though we were talking about Canada. But whatever, you're right - it's stupid, but this is SC - wtf do you expect? The thing that troubles me the most however is that as a truck driver you should really know your white trash a bit better - so it will be interesting to see if you got this one right - the way I see it, there is still a chance that she might just be a crazy christian speaking in evil tongues, or perhaps an unintelligible French Canadian - so at least you still have those two possibilities going for you. 25. We were the dumb polacks. But you guys are missing the point as usual. Many Canadians don't have a problem with immigration. They had concerns about vetting the immigrants and were hesitant to haste toward an unprecedented influx in such a short amount of time. Again tho, this story most likely isn't about bigoted white trash as much as you guys want it to be, but rather just another case of minority on minority crime.
