  1. nonsense - people keep saying this......the poll assumes you have the option to choose - there's no inconsistency - saying pull what ever handle you can get is a non-vote. It's not like if someone can ONLY get the main, that they'd refuse to pull it "well, he wanted me to pull the reserve, but I couldn't reach it, so I assumed he wanted me to just let him go and die. too bad, the main hacky was right there." Always Pull my reserve if you have the time and the option. {It pretty much goes without saying - pull the main if that's in reach and the reserve isn't - but anyone that need that clarification is too stupid to skydive} I think the 3rd option for AAD is pretty much a vote for reserve also - for people that I think aren't skilled enough or altitude aware enough to make the save without killing themselves or hurting me even worse. ... 2. I wonder how anyone could make that assessment if they weren't right there within a couple feet. But I like your post. any time someone says "a bit more", "a bit less", etc - I always feel like they are just staying on the safe, but uninformed, side of positions. You see it a ton with very conservative engineers. A little bit more safety margin is always good, right? Until the design doesn't work. Then just a bit more, I mean, really, just in case..... ... 3. I think this is where different people will shade the meanings of those words slightly differently. To me, acceptance indicates a certain participation, while tolerance says that I accept their right to participate, without choosing to do so myself. So maybe others' tolerance is my acceptance of their right to do something. Or something like that. Wendy P. I like Winsor's take on it. Tolerance used to have your connotation which is pretty much indistinguishable from "acceptance". But now it definitely has taken on an "enforced acceptance by law" definition under the PC police. Seriously, when you hear about 'tolerance' a lot of people default to litigation thoughts. ... 5. I really do love that comment, Wendy. This is really my point all along. 7. more likely - more and more people of various backgrounds are giving up the democrat's imposed stereotypes of people about which political position they MUST belong to based on thin and subjective personal choices and choosing their own ways more and more people are realizing that fiscal conservatism doesn't have to be locked in a bigotted way to social extremes that represent a tiny fraction of the right. And that the left's typical tie in of completely unrelated fiscal opinions to fringe right wing nutbags is now becoming an impotent strategy as people think for themselves. more and more people are thinking on their own it must really be KILLING the dems and the extreme right wing that they can no longer tell people how to think and which bias they MUST live with - and that threats of name calling on PC social issues no longer affect how people think and act in terms of protecting the tangibles in their lives ... I'd hypothesize a team that trained really hard on only the Intermediate draw getting 11's and 12's and 13's (medal contention, but still competitive) - and then at the very end of the season really had a great learning ramp but didn't have enough time to train the slot switchers in time for nationals just one possibility, but, hey, that's just me ... 11. I have no issue with this observation - when I teach mantis backslide, I definitely tell the student to put those grippers together (knees together) with the other inputs - it's very effective. However, if knees are wide - the hip joint will not allow any type of good arch. It's called bone on bone impingement. Almost every skydiver around can benefit from a narrower stance. Especially newer students who sit wide almost by reflex due to the adrenaline. However, the OP will really need to do something to get into a clean basic arch before anything else. Arms are easy - I use this sequence to get legs squared up. (He really needs to get observed directly by someone - like, I don't know, his instructor or coach? Or at least a decent belly flyer.) and, frankly, if he's counter turning to the upper body input - it's not backsliding - it's normally something in the torso or legs twisted wrong. aside - I also teach box turns (like Cat B) to emphasize lifting the other elbow rather than digging down the turn side elbow - it keeps the shoulders more squared up. FWIW ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  12. I have to change position on the backsliding thing. The car analogy by another poster doesn't pass the physics (sorry VegasJoe). A more apt analogy for the car thing is belly vs back flying - which is true, the same body position with the wind hitting your back vs your front does make a turn go the other way. Not true for forward vs backwards movement when in freefall. try it directly in the sky with the eyes closed (start a backslide for a couple seconds, and then hold it and do an upper body turn to the right - you'll backslide and also rotate clockwise simultaneously) and then watch the vid. However, correcting the basic body position and getting the spine and legs symmetrical usually fixes about everything. So (this is to JackC1), for whatever reason, when Vegasjoe has his students straighten their legs, it works likely because the actions needed to extend legs cleans up the body. I think finding what works for whatever reason is what makes guys like VJ excellent instructors. And that's what matters - even if I disagree with his physics, I'll still accept he gets results and try to figure out why without the mockery (though, I know you guys are just having fun with each other). ALL BETS ARE OFF in this discussion IF THE Student's backslide is SO BAD that they are essentially vertical. ... 13. You might be backsliding during the turn (but it would imply your spine isn't straight and legs uneven and pretty heavily). That's the simplest explanation - if not, then you need legs and spine coaching anyway. for backsliding - do these in this order, even if you don't think each is necessary: 1 - Knees together more (no matter where you are starting) 2 - Toes out (keep them out and 'feel' the push from the air) 3 - toe taps - make sure they are lined up 4 - arch 5 - relax Try your turn again. (pretty standard and needed sequence I teach for AFF and Mantis coaching) For goofy legs and spine 1 - Knees together more (no matter where you are starting) 2 - Toes out (keep them out and 'feel' the push from the air) 3 - toe taps - make sure they are lined up 4 - arch 5 - relax Try your turn again. (look familiar?) Don't hide your roadblocks from your instructors - likely having someone decent go up with you and look at your body and also be a still reference point and you can diagnose this in one jump. (or the tunnel ) If you are stable and under control, then they wouldn't bust you back to an earlier learning jump. But you still have to demonstrate turns and axis control for your A license. ... Instructor suits

as always, worry about the suit features, not the actual vendor decide what you want and then shop the different vendors advice on cordura and going with two piece suits is really good advice for instructors (though not for sport jumping otherwise). I don't have anything extra to add there. Maybe more pockets - as an instructor, it would be nice to carry an additional goggle set, cleaning cloth, packing stuff (pull up, rubber bands) to pack fast, a place for cards to carry the curriculum and flows, etc. ... Nope, there are no requirements other then no more then 50% of a team can have won Gold in Intermediate and I think no medalists from higher levels to be in that level. Only the one criteria - no more then 50% of a team can have won Gold or higher I don't think just generic medalists is a criteria also. but now I'm not sure. I'd rather see round 1 be a 'qualifying' round and then the teams are assigned to the category based on the results (with the option to OPT in a higher level, but not lower). I'd think that would allow for a more competitive field. Either that, or maybe have intermediate be split into two. There always seems to be two groups in intermediate (the small group of about 5-7 teams that score double digits - then a whole pile of teams that cover the 5-10 range) - lately, it takes 12+ to medal - no diff this year. The full dive pool is split - OPen and advanced Why not the partial dive pool as well - upper and lower intermediate groups I understand the military teams really had to brave the weather with their huge canopies that are required of them (another example of the gov choosing for you what's best and safe). 20. This weekend, I'm going to burn as many copies of GO, DOG, GO as I can find. Join me on my journey. My statement, by burning the books will be "Hey, I'm burning, Go, Dog, Go books" However, anyone is welcome to assume any other unstated motives I have or motives they'd like to think I have to spark furious debate - or not. I'm not sure yet, but I may do this naked as this is apparently very effective in getting out my message of "I'm burning Go, Dog, Go". I'm expressing myself as follows by being naked ----- "Hey, I'm Naked" However, I'll be assuming a few more things past the true expression - 1 - Hey, I'm Naked = Hey, pay attention to me 2 - Hey pay attention = you'll listen to what I have to say - perhaps if I also do a little dance 3 - As stated earlier, You'll listen to what I have to say = you'll hear/observe me expressing "I'm burning Go, Dog, Go" 4 - THEREFORE Hey, I'm naked = "I'm burning Go, Dog, Go" Which oddly enough, I could have just said in the first place. Or, I could have figured you guys would figure it out when I lit the pile of the books..... It's all very subtle - I hope the simple people get it, and their cats which they keep in a box. have a great weekend - someone please bring a fire extinguisher - buring private property while naked is concerning, it's supposed to be a bit windy. ... 22. sure - I guess tonight I'll choose to cook with olive oil instead of butter. Thus, I'm "expressing" myself. This is a FREE SPEECH issue. Maybe not match my socks next week - OOOOOOOH, I'm really taking it to the 'man' now. not sure about your last two sentences in this context, but I have no issues with them as they are obvious, so any disagreement you find with their general gist is just you constructing one - I'll flame if you like, but I won't really feel motivated about it. How about I just express myself by eating rice with a spoon? (can you tell it's getting close to deciding on dinner?) burning a book or a flag is just that - burning something. If someone wants to pretend they are making a statement, or if someone wants to infer a statement - meh. Whatever. As for me, I'll ask someone; "hey, why ya burning that bible?" he'll respond "because I think religion sucks" or "it's cold" or "it makes pretty colors" at that point, I'll take the words he stated directly as his "statement" anything up to that point is just him being obscure If someone also states "I'm burning a bible next week to highlight man's inhumanity to man".....Didn't he just MAKE the statement? regardless of whether he follows through on the action to burn his property or not?
