  1. I think you're being a little naive. There will always be guns available somewhere in the world, someone to smuggle them here and a criminal to buy them. Limiting the number of guns available to collectors does nothing to change the predispostion of someone to commit a crime, which is the idea, right? Neither does raising the price, because there will be a higher incentive to bring less expensive guns to the street. Besides, I think someone who can't afford a $500 Glock or $2000 Kimber should be entitled to protect himself. People don't just lose track of guns. -------------------------------------------------- the depth of his depravity sickens me. -- Jerry Falwell, People v. Larry Flynt
  2. As an official dz.com mindless liberal (tm), I must say I agree with this. Even if you don't actually have a concealed carry permit, there's no reason you couldn't have a background investigation. No, this wouldn't prevent someone from getting the investigation and then becoming a felon. It wouldn't prevent someone from going crazy after passing the investigation. But it's a whole lot better than nothing, and it assumes that a certain standard is met. Wendy W. Actually, some places require a criminal background check (telephone call) in addition to such a permit. -------------------------------------------------- the depth of his depravity sickens me. -- Jerry Falwell, People v. 3. Like drugs, illegal guns will always be available for criminals. I think you are attributing to guns a much larger societal problem. There is no way to prevent all crime or criminals from having guns. Similarly, there is no way to make responsible people more responsible. The difference is that responsible people have something to lose e.g. their liberty as an incentive. "Many people" have no fear of the law, little to lose and no respect for human life. The only way to identify those people is to look to their past conduct -- crimes -- and try to dissuade them from committing more. About the only thing we have to accomplish that is incarceration. If you want to make the country safer, then educate people who are in high crime areas and likely to fall into criminal activity to be able to get better jobs and leave. Getting back to the original post, people with children around need to safeguard their guns. That is something different than every gun needs a trigger lock or some other blanket nuisance when circumstances warranting such a safeguard do not exist. More importantly, I think children need to be educated about guns (to stay away from them) and there appears to be some resistance to that from the guns are bad crowd. -------------------------------------------------- the depth of his depravity sickens me. -- Jerry Falwell, People v. 6. While I doubt many would argue that the existing laws should be better enforced, the thing I love most about the argument that we need stricter gun laws is that they don't really apply to felons, e.g. it's illegal to make them register a gun they can't have. They will have zero effect on people have PROVEN they are more likely to commit crimes. So, who are you going to enforce these stricter laws against? It must be the ordinary Joe who snaps and decides to murder someone. There's really no way to stop someone set on irrational behavior, let alone detect him. So, I guess what we need to do is take away the rights of everyone in case someone loses it; so, they turn to a knife, car, poison... I know since "many people" don't care about their own safety [have a death wish?] we should go into their houses at night and make sure they aren't violating the stricter gun laws. Who's houses? The people who registered their weapons, of course, because we know where they live. Oh, but that would violate the Constitution. [meant to be sarcastic] There is no way to own a gun "*responsibly*" under that scenario. Your argument presumes that there are no honest men and we all are predisposed to evil. We mind as well throw everyone in jail now, just in case. It worked for more than one dictator (as did taking guns from the people). It also ignores both the deterrent effect of guns on crime as well as their use in non-lethal crimes. If someone is indeed irrational enough to murder, than he will find a way and if they're going to murder a child, it really doesn't take a gun purchased legally or not. When you live in an area where it takes police 20+ minutes to come or where crime is prevalent, you're right; it's better to be innocent and dead than have a gun to defend yourself from the "offensive criminal." That way you don't have to worry about being sued by the criminal's family when you kill him. On the other hand, it may not be a bad idea for people to understand exactly what a bullet does to understand its power (like a drunk-driving video) for those who have never been exposed to it. -------------------------------------------------- the depth of his depravity sickens me. -- Jerry Falwell, People v. 11. Last spring, I really needed a vacation but didn't have any time. I was talking to a friend and tongue in cheek said "I should just go jump out of an airplane." To which she replied, "call Mickey, he's been jumping for like 10 years." So, I did and flew out the next day (thinking it would be quicker than driving 80 miles). After the tandem, I told the videographer that I might jump again sometime... I went straight back into manifest, started AFF, got grounded because of weather, went to the local skydiver watering hole and spent the night on a couch in the hangar because of wicked thunderstorms. -------------------------------------------------- the depth of his depravity sickens me. -- Jerry Falwell, People v. 16. Last night, I was out with some friends and got drugged. If it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone. I think I was being set up to get rolled and was well on my way to being found robbed and disoriented along the side of the road by police or worse, but three friends went looking for me and probably saved my life with no time to spare. 18. I took Scott Miller's class as soon as I got my A. It took a full day and gave me a better understanding of how to fly a canopy and confidence therein, which I think decreases the likelihood of injury from panic and/or stopping flying the canopy. I thought my first jump was pretty good conisdering it was a new canopy to me, but Scott made suggestions to make it better. The second jump I popped up for the first time and did everything wrong but PLF. It seemed more drastic than it was. Watching the video, Scott showed me everything I did wrong (reach for the ground, let up on toggles, etc as well as what I did right) and made it clear that I could have rode it out and made a decent landing. I gained a lot from that crash and the subsequent landings applying its lessons in both confidence and skill. It was money very well spent. -------------------------------------------------- the depth of his depravity sickens me. -- Jerry Falwell, People v. Larry Flynt

Yeah, but if i use 'em, i'll have to take my kitchen table apart.
  20. I was there a few years ago at the end of March. Rented a car (be warned about the scams with bald tires, broken radios and other problems -- try to get full insurance is you rent a car). We drove west to a dirt road up to Monteverde to see Quetzals (birds) and do the zip lines with the towers (very cool), then around the lake to Arenal. There were fields of potholes! So, get a Jeep Cherokee! Sitting in the hot spring resort is nice if the volcano isn't clouded over. I thought the waterfall hike was overrated -- bring water if you go and drive all the way to the entrance. We drove back by Volcan Poas (clouded over by the time we got there) and were supposed to go rafting from San Jose. (Couldn't wait to leave San Jose). My favorite part was Drake Bay/Osa in the southwest. We flew into a dirt landing strip, took a boat to the "resort," snorkled off a beach and swam up a river, next hiked in the rainforest (a bunch of Scarlet Macaws on the beach) and last went out to an Island (actually I went fishing instead). If you really want jungle, go to the ranger station in middle of the part, I think it's called Sirena. If you want bars and surfing, stay north. -------------------------------------------------- the depth of his depravity sickens me. -- Jerry Falwell, People v. Larry Flynt

  24. One commentator recently opined that some of the criticism was coming from retired military who rose in a system of massive armies and bombing without the benefit of the technology that exists today and the tactics stemming therefrom. I wonder how much the technological advances we have seen in the past decade have changed the way we wage war. -------------------------------------------------- the depth of his depravity sickens me. -- Jerry Falwell, People v. 25. In school, we used to play asshole bingo which is similar. In every class there are a bunch of people who can't wait to be called on (e.g Marcia Brady, Frosty (bad hair coloring)). So, each was given a nickname. When you got bingo, you had anwer a question using the word of the day -- yielding beer as the prize.
