  1. Another knife vs. gun story: http://www.kltv.com/story/17926183/two-men-injured-after-altercation-including-a-gun-and-a-knife
  2. Rankin wrote a book by that name also. Copies are hard to come by. Amazon ony has one, and it's selling for $125.
  3. Kind of hard to do when you don't even provide a link to your web site...
  4. And the reason that people don't submit reports is because the "talking bad" occurs even when it's not justified. Since that activity is allowed here, that's what makes people reticent to post anything, because they know what the inevitable responses will be. If the forum was operated with higher ethical standards where speculation and unjustified bashing was squelched, then more people would be willing to come forward. And that's why it is the way it is.
  5. Are they serious? Do they think is someone is in possession of an illegal firearm they will just come forward and register it? Well, if it's not in the registry, then it's illegal! And with only 10 million database entries, from 600 different sources, cross-referenced to weapons permits, exemptions, orders, indemnification and personal prohibitions, what could possibly go wrong? I'm sure there's no chance that a serial number could be entered incorrectly, or two people with the same name could get mixed up, or anything like that. Not to worry! I'm sure the U.S. machinegun database is perfect too. And those Canadians must be crazy for getting rid of their long gun registration database, as the Germans always know what is best.
  6. News:Germany announces plans for gun registry "Germany's parliament is establishing a weapons registry. It will gather information from the 600 offices that issue weapons permits throughout Germany in one place. "The registry is intended to make it easier for German authorities to get an overview of the roughly 10 million firearms in the hands of private owners. According to the draft of the Bundestag legislation, "the national arms register catalogs weapons as well as weapons permits, exemptions, orders, indemnification and personal prohibitions pertaining to weapons." "Germany's Federal Administration Office is charged with maintaining the registry, which is designed to be quickly available to authorities. The goal is to make it easier to determine whether or not weapons are legally possessed, and to help officials with risk analysis when emergencies come up."Full story: Deutsche Welle Not to worry, cristelsabine, I'm sure that everything will go just fine with all your firearms.
  7. The news reports are immediate, but have no useful information about cause. The report that includes that info from knowledgeable authorities takes weeks to put together, from gear inspections, multiple witness interviews, etc.. And people here are too impatient to wait for that. Thus, they start with what they have - a news report.
  8. Another critic with no specificity. You been taking lessons from skydekker?
  9. The context of the introduction was intended to make it clear that this poll was for self defense outside the home. I also did not intend this to be yet another thread for arguing about the Martin/Zimmerman case - there are enough of those already. This is more of a generic self defense options topic. I don't think anyone except skydekker expects people to be legally obligated to run away inside their own homes. And kelpdiver complains that there are other options, but doesn't bother to offer up what those are. So this is all just more of the usual funny stuff that goes on here.
  10. How long will that keep an attacker from getting to you before you're cornered and trapped? You can run from one end of a house to another, for most average-sized homes, in under 10 seconds. What are you going to do after that? In an outside scenario you're not limited by walls, and if you're young and quick enough, you might just escape. The question is, should the government make running away a legal requirement, and prosecute any intended victims who dare to stand and defend themselves? But hey, you're free to run around in circles inside your house of that's the strategy you want to use. It's a free country. Good luck.
  11. Re: Gun ownership Note that at least two of the states in the "most peaceful" category are also states with very high levels of gun ownership. That's one sign that this study is BS. In addition to these problems about gun ownership being an invalid measure of peace, there is another problem on top of that. They count violent crime as a negative, which is fine. But then they also count number of people in prison as a negative too. So what that means is, a state would be "more peaceful" by their measure if there was a lot of violent crime, but none of of those violent criminals were in prison. And that's the opposite of what it should be. A state that actually did a good job of catching and imprisoning their violent criminals would score a double whammy against them by this method. The more violent criminals there are in prison, the MORE peaceful it will be. The more violent criminals running loose on the streets, the LESS peaceful it will be. Criminals in prison should offset violent crime on the street. Is this crap what passes for medical logic these days? Gun-o-phobia strikes again!
  12. WIth all the controversy created by the Martin-Zimmerman case in Florida and the "Stand your ground" self defense law, it seems that some people would prefer to see stand-your-ground repealed. So I'm just wondering what alternative proposals they prefer that the government require of citizens when confronted by criminals.
  13. News:Man buys knife, stabs 2 at store "A man stabbed two people at the Smith's Marketplace grocery store in downtown Salt Lake City. According to a witness, it appears one man was stabbed in the side of the head and another was stabbed in the stomach. The exact condition of the victims is unknown, but police believe the injuries are very serious and possibly critical..."Full story: KSL.com
  14. Let's see, Obama wants to crucify the oil companies, and bankrupt the coal companies. Where would that leave us, energy-wise? Steam engines, anyone?
  15. And they're all sliced in half, so you can't even cut one off and drink beer out of it.
  16. I didn't claim that he did - I was just arguing about your definition of "cheap". Back when I was a teen with my first car, the minimum wage was $2.25 per hour and a gallon of gas was 25-cents. Thus, a gallon of gas was 11% of one-hour's work. Nowadays, the minumum wage is $8.00 and a gallon of gas is $4, so you have to work 50% of an hour to buy a gallon of gas. Going from 11% to 50% isn't "cheap". On your next topic, here's just one news search for you regarding coal: http://www.google.com/search?q=obama+coal+power+bankrupt Coal provides over HALF of the electricity in America. Now what do you suppose would happen if Obama bankrupts the coal industry and all of those coal mines and coal fired electricity generating plants just disappear?
  17. "Site" should be "cite". The definition of "cheap" does not mean "priced below world market value".
  18. I got lucky and they doubled the pay scale just before I was drafted/joined in 1972 - a whopping $180 per month - with rent to pay, and a wife and child to support! I found a two room shack to rent for $75, which left me a whole $105 to pay for food, car, gas and electricity.

    Just wrong

And if that story gets you riled up, you might also want to google the fiasco with armed federal agents of the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) raiding fish-mongers.
  20. It looks like Eddie travels around the country full time taking first-jump courses. What a guy!
  21. Use Google: http://www.google.com/search?q=7.5+years+seven+prison+for+driving+the+wrong+way Drunk, twice the legal limit, driving the wrong way for 14 miles on an interstate highway, killed two people. I think the fucker is getting off too easy.
  22. Have you ever punched through a cloud in freefall in violation of the FARs? Have you ever opened lower than 2,000', in violation of the BSR's? Have you ever made a bad spot? Does that make you an incompetent skydiver? Have you ever rolled through a stop sign? Have you driven without your seat belt? Have you exceeded the speed limit? Does that make you an incompetent driver? Fact is, if you do anything often enough, for long enough, you're bound to violate some technical rules sooner or later. That doesn't make you incompetent at what you're doing, nor does it even mean that you are generally unsafe. It just means that you're human, and everyone makes mistakes now and then, especially when it involves a myriad of government regulations that are difficult to comprehend.
