  1. Heh heh. We all start out in the same place. Here's my first 7 minutes in there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0NCznXZG0o I also still get a chuckle over my exit on my AFF 5 jump: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHdsUICa7zY Here's my most recent tunnel session. I've never been terribly interested in freeflying, so I mostly just stay on my belly and have fun in the tunnel anymore. This is like 340 jumps and several hours in the tunnel after the earlier videos. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zXwpysPy6A I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  2. Yeah, I got the same thing out here in Colorado. I'd never heard of the wind tunnel before. I did 6 minutes there after my first AFF jump and was sore for three days. It did help with the flying, though. I think I ended up putting in about half an hour before getting my A license. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  3. Welcome! No one's very good at it at AFF level 3. Check again in a couple hundred jumps! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  4. Eat right. Exercise. Wear an AAD. Die anyway. Go forth and die. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  5. If you want safe, you could sit around at home in your underwear playing WoW all day. Of course, 90,000 people a year in the USA die in household accidents, so best not move for your seat for much. You can probably get Doritos on amazon.com. 20 years they'll probably look back on this post and say "Wow, think of how many people would still be alive if that guy hadn't pointed out that you could buy Doritos on amazon.com." I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  6. Inasmuch as there's butt-hurt, I recall it was very similar back when they made seatbelts mandatory in the USA. Even now you still occasionally hear some ridiculously situational case where you'd have been better off not wearing one. I could make a harsh, Darwinistic argument for letting those guys not wear them, but a fatality accident usually closes roads down for hours. 7. The snake's all like "You think you can walk all over me?!" I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  8. I have one in my rig and one of my skydiving career goals is to never have it deploy my reserve for me. I've forgotten to activate it a couple of times and realized it on the plane, but wasn't terribly concerned about doing any one jump without it, especially solo. I've been much more careful about checking it a couple times as part of my gearing-up process now, though. I also know a few people who don't use one, either because they don't trust them or they can't (or don't want to) afford it. It very much reminds me of the whole seat belt argument when they started making those mandatory. I'll always have and use one, personally, but I'm not particularly inclined to tell some old coot with 10,000+ jumps that he has to install one if he doesn't want to. I think we're all aware of the risks we take. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  9. Google skydiving vs. base jumper fatality rate. Just so we have the correct context for me to link this. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  10. No flare at all. I never did stand a landing up on the damn thing, usually ended up sliding in on my heels. It also steered rather like a cow. The openings were never terribly hard but they were snappy -- the previous guy had sewn a pocket into the slider. Flying it did give me a new appreciation for my Safire 2, though! I've suggested that my friend donate the canopy to Mile Hi. They could slap it in a rig and make it the "Mile Hi Challenge Rig!" Maybe let people jump it after 200 skydives. It did do a good job of getting me on the ground and will definitely make you appreciate whatever else you're flying. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. 11. Heh, I borrowed a F111 Raider 2 made in 1990 for a dozen or so jumps. The improvements made since then might not be major ones, but they are definitely noticeable improvements! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  12. The openings on their canopies look pretty nice. I want a skydiving canopy I can catch thermals on and go flying off cross country for half an hour or so. Maybe I should try to get them to cough up a prototype for me! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  13. I'd hate to know how long it'd take to climb one that high. http://what-if.xkcd.com/126/ Except that's stairs, not a ladder. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  14. As far as I know I did't do anything special to get the magazine. I was a bit surprised when the first issue arrived after I got my A license a couple years ago. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  15. Hey all! Friend of mine's has flown at the iFly tunnel in Denver a good bit and is curious to fly in some other tunnels around the country. The rates page for the Eloy tunnel puts time there at neighborhood of $20 a minute. I assume that's with coaching. If my friend and I want to go down there and just fly around in the tunnel for a bit, is it possible to book non-coached minutes? I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  16. I don't think we can land one at Vance Brand. Runway's not long enough. An extension of the runway will be considered, but length is only one aspect of the runway that relates to or controls the type of aircraft that can utilize the airport. In addition to length, the weight bearing capacity of the runway is also a limiting factor. The current runway is weight-limited to typical corporate jet aircraft weighing up to 30,000 lbs with single landing gear, or not more than 60,000 lbs with tandem landing gear. If an extension of the runway is constructed, the weight limits of the existing concrete runway will still control the size of the aircraft that could use the runway. There are not currently any plans to increase the structural weight capacity of the runway. Quite simply, the airport was not designed or built to accommodate larger aircraft. Also, the layout of the existing airport property, the spacing of taxiways and the proximity of the hangers to the runway limit operations at the Airport. Tim Barth, Longmont Vance Brand Airport Manager Yeah yeah, you know who says "It's not the length of the runway, it's how you use it"? Someone with a short runway! 17. Hmm... "It's RSI from dealing poker hands at casino." "It's caused by global warming." "Slipped while flogging the BF." "I knew I should have bought that voodoo doll that old gypsy woman was selling!" I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  18. Birthday jump in birthday suit? I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  19. I don't think we can land one at Vance Brand. Runway's not long enough. If we have a boogie here we'd probably burn through our 50,000 skydives for the year in the month the boogie occurs. Not that I think Mile Hi would mind THAT too much. The weather's been shit for the last, though. It's raining today. I want to at least go do a hop and pop, but it's just not going to happen. Pretty crazy, for Colorado. If I wanted to live somewhere it rained all the time, I'd have moved to Seattle. I'm kind of bent out of shape Seattle decided to move (its weather) here I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  20. Ya know, it might not be a bad idea to extend an olive branch. maybe she'll get hooked on skydiving and come on over to our side. Stranger shit has happened! In the meantime, thanks to Ryoder for keeping us all posted, the DZO, Staff, and skydivers at MHS for keeping the faith and fighting the good for all of us! That'd probably be the ONE JUMP where the wind picks up and the TI ends up sliding along the ground on the student's face for 100 feet. Not intentionally -- for all the talk, it IS a professional operation there and committed to safety, but the universe seems to have a twisted sense of humor about that sort of thing, and if you tempt fate like that, that's the sort of thing that seems to be inevitably bound to happen. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  21. Not, "Do I get a helmet too?" I don't chuck a drogue, but I hang out with people who do! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  22. I show 'em the paint marks on the top of the helmet and remark that once you get out of the plane, the helmet's wearing YOU for protection. Plus that way I don't have to stick a gopro to my forehead. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  23. I get "Windsor" whenever I try to do "Wingsuit" I've given up and now go on Windsor jumps on a regular basis. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  24. Ooh! I had a thing for this! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
  25. Heh, ours are solid old girls, but I think the average whuffo would find them to be a wee bit intimidating. Leastwise I found them a wee bit intimidating, going up the first... few... dozen... times. It's funny, now I feel safer on the purple otter than I do on a commercial airliner. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?
