  1. Dug out my GTI. I'll need the equivelent of a first jump course I'm so uncurrent with it... Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  2. Harvey was my student and one of my best friends for 30+ years. Soss was someone you could never forget. You may find this interesting: http://www.aicommand.com/SossAtAngelFalls.htm He's still with us in cyberspace... https://www.facebook.com/?sk=nf#!/hososs The Herd's alive and kicking... https://www.facebook.com/?sk=nf#!/pages/United-Parachute-Club-Home-of-The-Herd/178554785514724 Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  3. A typical certified GA airplane will stall from the wing root out to the wing tip. The buffeting you feel is the disrupted airflow from the part of the wing near the root that is stalled flowing over the rear stabilizer/ rudder. This is accomplished by the wing having a twist in it so the angle of attack varies along the wing. The root reaches the critical angle first and as you hold it there more of the wing stalls until it "breaks". Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  4. I'm well versed in the stall principles in aircraft. But a typical aircraft doesn't stall suddenly and completely like a canopy will on rears. Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  5. Thank you gentlemen. I have a better understanding of what happens now. Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  6. ....explain the aerodynamics of the sudden stall when using the rears... Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  7. No my question was "is it the rate of change of the critical angle that causes it?" I guess the correct question should have been... is it the difference in rate of change to the critical angle of attack that causes it? Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  8. Who told you Kroops fall apart after 10 jumps? Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  9. Could someone that has a clue explain the aerodynamics of the sudden stall when using the rears? Is it the difference in the rate of change of the critical angle that causes it? Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  10. CH-54 with the people pod. Can beat an F-15 to 10,000 ft. Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  11. Why would there be an increased possibility of an off field landing when jumping from an almost stationary aircraft? Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  12. I think they're kind of cool. I mash my face right up against the glass and watch the ground rush up at me. It's as close as you can get to experiencing "ground rush", without actually being in real danger. Peach Tree Plaza in Atlanta has the best glass elevators I have ever been on. Safety meeting then ride the elevators. That was in 1979 during a brief stay at the Benning School for Boys. 13. 100% Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  14. Everything you could ever want to know about how your eyes work. Note the part about strobes... http://www.skybrary.aero/index.php/Vision_(OGHFA_BN) Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  15. I think the USPS has an advantage with international shipping. Something to do with clearing customs. Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  16. Can't make it perform like it should if you don't have the instrumentation to know what its doing. If you don't know EGT, CHT and fuel flow you can only guess. Even without fuel flow you could see any problems due to a blocked injector, induction leak, sticking valve or a fouled plug. Leave the old cht installed and get an engine analyzer, it will help protect your investment and let you know whats really going on. Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  17. Inadvertant IMC by committee. Never learned that one... Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  18. Anybody notice this should be in bonfire? Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  19. Semantics... We HAVE to notify them, they might (and to the best of my knowledge always do) file a NOTAM. When ever your doing a real demo (one that requires form 7711-2 such as over a congested area or open air assembly of people) the certificate of authorization that comes back from the faa will typically require the filing of a notam. That is the only time you are required to file one. Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  20. How does the DZO know about your talk with the new guy? And when they say "thats ok, I know what I'm doing" what do you do? Get off the load, call them an asshole, pull their reserve? No you go talk with the DZO who's the one that can do something... bunch of people standing around saying your gonna hurt yourself doesn't work. Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  21. Well it seems like he got the message... Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  22. Not trolling Chuck. You saw the results you got from "talking" to him. Didn't do a damn thing. I say don't waste your breath and go right to the person that can do something about it. Thats the only way you can make a difference. I don't think talking to an idiot makes you someone that takes safety seriously. Somebody that takes safety seriously would do something that would yeild a positive outcome. Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  23. I take it you'll have no problem personally scraping the next Whizzkid up off the ground and filling in the divots. Your attitude is exactly why the situation has got where it has today. People need to start speaking out loud and clear if we want to cut the body count. I don't think its my place to tell some idiot that he is an idiot. If he doesn't get it he doesn't get it. Do I think what he is doing is right, hell no. But its not my place to tell him. I'd say something the the DZO or S&TA Thats their job. My job is to get off the load that he's on and join the clappers. Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  24. Like highly experienced canopy pilots seem to be doing on a regular basis in the last year or so? Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
  25. Thats a DZO issue. Replying to: Re: Stall On Jump Run Emergency Procedure? by billvon If the plane is unrecoverable then exiting is a very very good idea.
