I'm more of a salad bar guy than a Hometown Buffet man, but to honor you I'll give it a try Farflung. I did go to one in Arizona (?) years ago. I saw an old guy eat enough fried chicken to feed a big family. Nothing else, just a mountain of fried chicken.

We are fortunate to have Fresh Choice. It's a giant salad buffet. You can be kinda healthy without getting all tofu-ey and organic.

Hometown buffet is rumored to be subsidized by the makers of Lipitor. How else can they feed a guy 7 lbs of fried chicken for $7?

So Farflung, why are you so modest about being a military pilot? I've never seen similar behavior. You never give the usual "there I was, SAMs coming up everywhere" stories. Even if you were a Herc or Buff driver you could spin some good yarns.

Jumping next weekend. Gotta get some more airtime while the weather is still warm. I used to jump in bitter cold until one day, miserably near hypothermic, I said "why?".

Ted Braden was assigned to my command at Fort Dix about March 1967 when he was returned to the US after being "apprehended" in the Congo. He was Special Forces SFC at the time. His 201 File and Form 20 listed him as having 3 years of college at the University of Toledo and a GT score, roughly IQ, in the 150s. He had prior commissioned service in the USAF. He had several "coded" assignments on his Form 20. He was confined to the post stockade pending disposition of his AWOL charge. The Article 32 Investigating Officer recommended a GCM. The AWOL charge was supported by an Extract Copy of the Morning Report from his unit in Viet Nam. On the day his GCM was to be convened the CG of Fort Dix received a phone call from GEN Harold K Johnson then Army Chief of Staff in which he directed the GCM not be convened for "security reasons". With the assistance of the Assistant SJA at post headquarters we persuaded Braden to resign for the good of the service with a bar to reenlistment. He was escorted to the Transfer Station at Fort Dix by my XO and that was the last I saw of Braden. While in the stockade he had his own cell with a TV and was smoking cigars while all other prisoners were limited to non filter cigarettes. His appearance was immaculate. We had some private conversations that had me wondering who was in control.

In 1974 while at Fort Jackson I had a conversation with the Asst IG about this case without mentioning Braden's name. The Asst IG looked at me and said you are talking about Ted Braden. I was dumbfounded. He then told me he had seen Braden in Viet Nam in 1973 and he was then a Sergeant Major. The Asst IG thought Braden had been a CIA plant in the Congo and his position had been compromised so he was "arrested for being AWOL". We documented his travels from Viet Nam to the Congo znd they took him to Australia to Seattle to Miami to Brussels to the Congo.

Per the Social Security Death Index Braden was born in 24 Sep 1928 and died in 21 Jun 2007 in Stroudsburg, PA.

My recollection was Braden was about 5 feet 8 or 9 and very physically fit.

It went as far as him emailing an African wildlife expert at a zoo to settle it................................... only to have the guy email him back saying how important his job is and that he doesn't have time settling debates as rediculous as that.................................................. Or in short, he didn't know which lead us to wonder just what kind of expert he was.

It was in a Soldier of Fortune magazine dated Dec 1994, but that same article and picture was in another article prior to that.

Won't be as good as having the original magazine article from the safety deposit box, etc., but if the writer is the same John Mullins that is the real-life / author / veteran / black ops guy that the character in the Soldier of Fortune game is based on, he can probably be contacted for dates of when the article originally came out - if that is something you want to know. Search on John Mullins Vietnam for a web page or contact info. Or you could contact SOF magazine archives dept. Not sure if having the date is something that would help - just a suggestion.

John Mullins is deceased.

The 1st time I saw the same article and pictures was in 1990.
For some reason he placed this issue in a safe deposit box in January of 1995 before he died...NOTHING ELSE WAS IN THAT BOX. He had opened the box in March of 1990. I do NOT know where the things are that I saw in March of 1990. The ticket I didn't see until 1994. The 1994 find was in the box with the taxes for 1990 and this was the first time I saw the ticket. I had seen the stub and the bag in 1990.

I only found the safe deposit box because of a key and receipt in his wallet. We had our own personal joint safe deposit box.

I had to take the key, the receipt and death certifcate and marriage certificate and will to the bank. Since I was not on the account I was NOT allowed to be in the room when it was opened. When they handed me a magazine - can you not imagine MY surprise. I asked them again - if they were sure there was NOTHING else in that box.

Remember at the time I DID NOT know who DAN COOPER WAS.
He tried to tell me and he wanted us to go for a ride - he had to show me something. This was was about 4 or 5 days before he died. I may still have my journal and give you exact dates. I dressed him and both nights - there were horrible rains - I couldn't get him to the van. They had OK'ed me to take him for a ride. He begged me to take him even in the rain and wind - but there was NO way. I couldn't get him in and out of the van and I couldn't even get to the van...to bring it around so the orderly could help get him in.

After I found out who Dan Cooper was - I contacted the Editor of the magazine -Robert Brown who also is now deceased.

He told me the Mullins family would have the pictures and they had NONE on file in their office.
I wanted to know who the men where in one of the pictures in that magazine.

He also told me this was a reprint of the same article done in other magazines. Some where I have my notes of that conversation and can provide more details of that discussion. of anyone is interested.

The Soldier of Fortune had also printed this or a similiar article by John Mullins in prior yrs. The article centers around Bu Dop and all of you remember those discussions. The title of this particular article is "The Man Who Held The Secrets"

I only kept the book because it was just strange...that he left only this in the safe deposit box. Even after I found out who Dan Cooper was - it was a long time before I pulled this magazine from the momento box. I sent the information to CARR but got NO WHERE and the same with Agent Hope. I am just this crazy old woman no one really ever listens to...and according to one person - a liar and I am making all of this up.

There is NO WAY this simple woman could possible make all of this shit up. THere is NO way I would have spent the last 15 yrs doing this if I did NOT know what I know...I don't have all the pieces. There was another safe deposit box under the name of John Collins opened in 1980 and closed in 1990 then Duane Weber opens a secret box in Pensacola.

Question since your father disappeared in 1971 - do you know if he had a broken arm and burns. Seems like this is something you would know, but I don't remember the history on your father and your siblings and the other set of siblings. Please refresh the backgound on Melvin Wilson for all of us. Date and known activities and location until 1971 - at least what little you know.

A simple outline like that might help others to fill in the blanks.

What got my attention was the Salt Lake and 727. I had found some information on this yrs. ago looking for the name of woman - who I thought would been the mother of Duane's daughter. Since I never knew her last name - that search was for ought.

I had the complete passenger list on that flight at one time. I forgot who helped me find that information and hope I still have it - as it might not be available anymore. I do not even know where to look in all of these massive files I have acquired. I remember I was looking for motive - because of something Duane said I could never quiet put my finger on...but, it was in reference to someone dieing in a plane crash - a woman. Salt Lake was mentioned.

Your bringing this to surface again because of Melvin Wilson is shear coincidience, but it make me want to revisit that list. Maybe, because NOW I know more about Weber's past than I did at the time the research was acquired for me. Maybe now a name would POP.

Can I actually put him on Ignore on the thread? Note how EVERY post he makes is directed at me and they are always violent and threatening. Look back at his last 15 posts and you will be shocked at the number of those post that repetitively do nothing but name calling and making threats. If he is not attacking me he is attacking others. Very few civil posts.

Being civil with him does NOT work - like the lecture I gave on exposing a 9 and 12 yr old to this thread.

I wanted to get in touch with John Mullins family - to know his history and see if they had names to go with the pictures. I tried but got nowhere on that research.

So much is happening so fast right now it is hard to keep up and find time to breath. My guy is amazing. The FBI really screwed up. Instead of having an informed agent - following the Cooper case it changed hands so many times that no one agent had enough background to really investigate decent suspects.

This thread is a good example of how the FBI missed Cooper. Too many researchers going too many different ways and NOT one of them has access to all of the Cooper files nor sufficient infomation on suspects ...to get a clear picture. They FBI almost had Cooper - but they didn't put a lid on the Money and the press in 1980 so Cooper was able to successfully slip through their fingers ONE more time.

Frankly I am glad Cooper got away, but if I told you why it would upset someone who reads everything I post.

I guess I'm spoilt living here. Seen both in the wild a number of times...maybe you guys need to get to Africa, big difference to seeing them in a zoo...

On Braden. Those of you who remember some of my argument about a hypothetical Cooper profile will realise I am tickled at the Congo angle. I said it was a great place to disappear along with the dollars...which would be easily spent with no-one checking serial numbers!

Yes, but the lionesses will target the stragglers, so it is often the old, weak or babies who get taken. But they can still do damage to the lionesses.

If you've ever watched footage of lioness attacks, it is quite fascinating. I guess it's instinct, but it is akin to a well- executed military plan! I saw aerial footage once of ...I think it was some wild dogs they were after... and the aerial footage showed clearly how they executed a pincer attack on the pack. Incredible stuff.
