A gift for iPhone users !

Recommended Posts

Hello to everyone,

Today i am proud to announce a birth (not a child ;) )
As an iPhone Developer i made an app suited for Skydiving. The name of the app is "SkydiverGps". This is not a logbook (there are app for that). It s a live recorder that uses the integrated GPS on the iPhone.

With this app, you can actually record your speeds (vertical and horizontal) and your flight duration. You can also export each one of your jumps to GoogleEarth (the software) in order to visualize your 3D path.

Looks cool ? Wait... I made it free so that you guys can enjoy it

There is a website associated with this app http://www.skydivergps.com/iphone/ . You will find there some useful informations, details and screenshots.

Enjoy this app, have fun, and don't forget that safety goes first !

The refresh rate is 1 per second ( so 1hz) but it has been tested and it looks really good

Doesn't the iPhone (among most other phones) use aGPS that relies heavily on the cell tower reception to give it a better fix as to where it is?

Without the assist, it is possible that your results are way off, so sure, it might be a novelty to see you roughly flew this far, this fast... it's not that accurate.

A few persons from around the world ( california, england, france ) have given me the first live test of this app and the results are really cool...
We can see with precision the path in 3D in Google Earth, from the airplane to the ground, with the different parts of the jump (plane, freefall, canopy, ground)

I have also a person that has tested it in a wingsuit and it looks really interesting. The fact that it 's going slower is better for the gps data of the iphone, and for the precision of the data...

I did this with my GPS running watch this very weekend as an experiment and this is the result:-
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/103106328#.TjWdhAWRrUI.email
If you switch to aerial view you get a google earth map and can zoom in to see all aspects of the jump.
Flightpath, Run in, Exit, Freefall, Track, Canopy ride and Swoop.
Wouldn't have a clue how accurate it is, it was purely done for fun.
It is a Garmin Forerunner 110 GPS watch by the way.
I'll try the iPhone app for comparison.
Cheers

It does'nt close down location services after exit (off the app :D )

There's this little pointer up next to the battery, that stays there until you close it with the "background app bar".

Kills your battery.

TK (DZO of Z-Hills) noted that problem too. Sadly it seems like it's unavoidable, if you disable the location services when the phone locks or minimizes the app, nobody would ever get any data off of it.

Also, I wanted to comment on this:

I disagree, the fact that its falling slower isn't better for the GPS data. Think about this (I'll try to explain it the best way I can):

1Hz refresh
~10m accuracy

Now, if you go 20m in that one second, there are error margins of ~5m on each side of the locations, putting your distance traveled between ~10-30m. Now think of going 200m between data streams, with the same accuracy and refresh, your variation is a smaller percentage (something like 190-210m).

Hopefully someone will chime in if I'm completely off base, but I did a bit of research on this about 6 years ago, and I'm pretty sure I'm right on it.

Hello everyone,

Answering to several private messages, here are screenshots made by the application SkydiverGps for iPhone. 3D Paths are the red lines in the following files.

In GoogleEarth you can turn around, zoom in and out, and pan...
Great way to visualize our jumps

Enjoy

So first few jumps (wingsuit flights) with the app (not thrilled about jumping with a $400 phone)
After everything is all said and done... Love the app. I think its badass to import it into Google Earth and see my flights. The flights are pretty accurate to what/where we flew. (not sure how true/perfect the slope is... dont really care I just like the part of seeing it over the map I want to do a full out max performance flight and see what it looks like...

Over all love the app!
I do wish the app could sense when the freefall started so I dont have the plane ride on the google earth maps
Is it saturday yet?
