Hell yes, women are scared.  And, that is exactly why they are voting to support the right to an abortion.

Sean Hannity: Democrats trying to ‘scare women’ on abortion | The Hill

Jerry Baumchen

Fox News host Sean Hannity accused Democrats of trying to “scare” women voters into thinking Republicans want a nationwide ban on abortion, which he said contributed to GOP losses in Tuesday night’s elections.

Now where would anyone get that idea?

I suggest that the US take a different approach to lowering its abortion rate. Try the Canadian approach. For decades now we have things that both sides want. 25% fewer abortions per woman, and absolutely no law about it.

Please. They don't care about 'the children' or about 'life being sacred'.

They care about controlling women.

Ol' Rick Santorum accidentally talks about republican fears out loud: "You put very sexy things like abortion and marijuana on the ballot, and a lot of young people come out and vote. It was a secret sauce for disaster in Ohio. I don't know what they were thinking, but that's why, thank goodness, most of the states in this country don't allow you to put everything on the ballot, because pure democracy is not the way to run a country."

O no!  Not DEMOCRACY!  With YOUNG PEOPLE in it!  How will the old white protestant straight guys keep control if we give the young voters a VOTE?

He is not wrong about that. Even though in this case the outcome corrects an abuse of power.

Agreed. The phrase wil be taken out of context, like it has already here, and used against him. He should have known better, but oppression by majority, otherwise known as pure democracy, is not a way to run a country.

Hi Bill,

I mean, look at the disaster that happened when we gave the vote to women.

Sure, but you can say the same about an unfettered representative democracy. Politicians are more than capable of oppressing minorities if they’re allowed to.

It’s a constitution and an independent judiciary that stops oppression by the majority from happening.

This. It’s why people have to understand that a Constitution is just the rules for a game (a country), and trying to change the rules is like trying to hide an attractive card in poker

Is oppression by a minority somehow preferable?

You mean the constitution that doesn't make it a pure democracy? Yes, having a constitution that sets up your country to not be a pure democracy is one of the mitigating factors of a pure democracy.

Sure, but in the context of the statement of the politician in question I thought we were contrasting people voting for representatives vs people voting directly on policy - not whether there should be constitutional limits on either system.

In fact it would be a very odd way to interpret his words as a statement on whether constitutional limits should exist given that the vote he was talking about was for a constitutional limit on government power. The existence of constitutional limits is implicit in his statement and the entire conversation that follows.

No, trying to set up a system that avoids both extremes is generally preferable. Weird question really.

Not really.  We have a system right now that is giving a few extreme members of the House an influence way out of proportion to their support in the population.  We had executive orders from presidents with fewer votes than their opponents thanks to an Electoral College designed to give outsized power to states with small populations.  We have a single senator from a small state blocking dozens, maybe hundreds, of military appointments.  We have state houses with gerrymandered districts that create policies out of line with the wishes of a majority of the population.

Yep.  He wa also complaining about the high voter turnout because that tends to draw more young people - and young people don't vote for republicans.

Hi Bill,

IMO they vote with their heart & not their wallet.

Jerry Baumchen

That’s because some of them haven’t had enough time to understand that sometimes the wallet influences the heart. No family, children — it’s easier to go for broke. Both metaphorically and literally
