There was talk at the time of how ridiculous it was to object to an affair, of how it would be expected in any Western European country, etc etc etc. The “abuse of power” angle just didn’t make it into a lot of the news. And plenty of guys admired him for still “having it.” The MeToo movement hadn’t happpened yet, Harvey Weinstein was still rising, and the ejecting of CEO’s for affairs with subordinates was just beginning in the 90’s. Just because I’m kind of embarrassed about my reaction at the time to the president (who gave my cousin the creeps when she met him) having an affair with a subordinate doesn’t make it untrue. And I can't help but think that one of the many things that kept HRC out of the White House was these same people finding themselves unable to vote for a wife who would put up with that.
