masterrig 1 #27 August 19, 2011 QuoteQuoteQuoteThere are so many smart women ... why do the Republicans keep pushing retards like Palin and Bachmann? Take the example of Republican Christine Todd Whitman. Sharp as a whip, long career in government, successful 2-term Governor of New Jersey. Then she became Bush's Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, where she was repeatedly marginalized for trying to do her job conscientiously (which meant actually trying to protect the environment, (uh- see name of agency...) instead of toeing the right-wing anti-environmentalist line); and eventually she resigned in disgust. In 2005, she released a book entitled, It's My Party, Too: Taking Back the Republican Party... And Bringing the Country Together Again - the title of which pretty much speaks for itself. She also has founded a political action committee called It's My Party Too - again which is fairly self-explanatory. So instead of a smart, capable and conscientious Republican woman like Whitman being embraced and nurtured by at the national level, she's shunted aside, and is left with playing the "outsider looking in" to her own party. Instead, the poster-child female champions put up on the Republican party are people like Bachmann and Palin and (for God's sake) Christine O'Donnell. And my friend Lawrocket calls us to task for calling Republicans "stupid". Well, this is why, Jerry. I showed up at the airport in New Jersey where my airplane was based, and the the owner was sitting at his desk with a shocked look on his face. He said "did you see the car that just left? That was the Governor!" It turns out that, after he spent years butting heads with bureaucrats in Trenton in the attempt to upgrade the airport, the Governor took matters into her own hands. She showed up in a Gov't pool sedan, without entourage or press presence, asked what was needed, and took notes for two hours. The airport now has working runway lights, a rotating beacon and a freshly paved runway. Christie Whitman is one of the good guys, and I would vote for her in a heartbeat. Blue skies, Winsor It's a shame, the 'boy's club' in Washington holds-back real potential. Chuck

quade 4 #30 August 20, 2011 QuoteWhat's a R I N O? Ironically it stands for "Republican In Name Only," but the Republican party has been so co-oped by non-traditional Republicans that RINO is now a name these "new" Republican give to anyone in their party they disagree with. Today, anyone following directly in the footsteps of Ronald Reagan himself would be called a RINO by these people. And I ain't kidding. Reagan himself would not pass the litmus tests much of the Republican party now feels is mandatory to be considered a "real" Republican. http://www.redstate.com/thedividedstatesblog/2010/05/11/ronald-reagan-the-great-rino-of-american-history/quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward,” Bachmann said on conservative activist Jay Sekulow’s show. Rise of the Soviet Union? Then there's the Elvis's birthday blunder, The "Lexington and Concord in New Hampshire" blunder, The John Wayne’s Iowa birthplace blunder, And then during the GOP debate last week in Ames, she claimed that Standard & Poor’s downgrade of the U.S. credit rating validated her belief that the debt ceiling should not have been raised, when the rating agency said that exactly the opposite was the case. He's insufficiently extreme and not divisive enough. That means too little publicity, and that means too little money with which to campaign. He will also be 77 1/2 years old on Inauguration Day 2013. (Incidentally, today's his birthday.) Frankly, that makes him just too old.

They rarely make specific promises though, like $2 gas, or "read my lips, no new taxes." That Bush paid a price for that precise promise, though now he must just be kicking himself and asking why the fuck did I do revenue enhancements when these guys don't even pretend to balance the budget? Similarly, Obama stepped into a bit with those graphs promised this much unemployment if porkulous was or was not passed. But to his benefit, that's a bit more complicated a promise than "gas for $1.xx." so people won't remember it as well.

Which is yet another reason why Republicans get tarnished with the "stupid" - as in, "intellectually lacking" - broad brush. Bachmann's promise was stupid - even other Republicans are laughing it off - but the sound-byte, like the proverbial seed, finds purchase in fertile soil: an audience that is willing to believe it. In other words, Stupid Message is well-received by Stupid Audience.
