The Minimum Wage

Recommended Posts

...needs to be doubled to get the economy stabilised :)
Quote

Minimum wages were first proposed as a way to control the proliferation of sweat shops in manufacturing industries. The sweat shops employed large numbers of women and young workers, paying them what were considered to be substandard wages. The sweatshop owners were thought to have unfair bargaining power over their workers, and a minimum wage was proposed as a means to make them pay "fairly." Over time, the focus changed to helping people, especially families, become more self sufficient. Today, minimum wage laws cover workers in most low-paid fields of employment.

The minimum wage has a strong social appeal, rooted in concern about the ability of markets to provide income equity for the least able members of the work force. An obvious solution to this concern is to redefine the wage structure politically to achieve a socially preferable distribution of income. Thus, minimum wage laws have usually been judged against the criterion of reducing poverty.

Although the goals of the minimum wage are widely accepted as proper, there is great disagreement as to whether the minimum wage is effective in attaining its goals. From the time of their introduction, minimum wage laws have been highly controversial politically, and have received much less support from economists than from the general public. Despite decades of experience and economic research, debates about the costs and benefits of minimum wages continue even today.

Maybe it's time we have a tiered minimum wage system where the wage would depend upon conditions such as single/married, employed/unemployed spouse, number of children, education, etc.
A single high school dropout with no kids does not deserve or need as high of a minimum wage as someone who is married, has two kids at home with their spouse, has a high school diploma and no criminal record.
This is the part that will get ugly for some: Tax breaks would be given to employers so that there is no advantage to them to hire people from one minimum wage group over another.

I never understood why it is politically palatable to pay MORONS to have more children. Tax breaks for more than 2 children????

FUCK THAT

If stupid people want to have more than 2 children they should pay a hell of a lot more taxes to support that increased burden to society.

I agree that there would have to be a cutoff for number of children. 1 or 2 seems to be a good place to start discussion.

Parents aside, the 3rd-and-later kids are innocent: they didn't ask to be born, and can't fend for themselves. More money staying in the family puts more food in those kids' mouths.

Its because those MORONS vote for the politicians that the promise higher minimum wages and bigger tax breaks for their illegitimate children. And when those children grow up, they do the same. Ever watch the movie Idiocracy?

Where's it written down that the "minimum wage" should compensate unskilled labor enough to own a big house, big cars, big screen T.V., cell phone, high speed Internet and satellite T.V. and come with free health care? NO WHERE! Its just that the MORONS are out numbering us (they breed more) and are voting those politicians into office that promise them more hand-outs.

Minimum wage laws are inherently wrong and should be scrapped. However, Americans have become so conditioned to the mighty edicts of the left-wing nanny state that it would be impossible to make any progress toward liberty & freedom in this area. Better to focus on regaining freedom in other areas and repealing other intrusive laws.

Remember 30 years ago when most fast-food restaurants were reasonably clean and well staffed?
Thanks to left-wing minimum wage laws employers are forced to pay entry-level employees more than they're worth. It has become too expensive to schedule an extra person or two on any given shift.

Funny how the people who claim a monopoly on concern for the "little guy" are the same people who impose high taxes on those minimum wage paychecks, demand that waiters, bartenders & pizza guys report tips, and impose laws which make it more difficult for business owners to hire several more little guys.

Cheers,
Jon

I have a better idea...let's make it ten times what it is now....that should really stabilize things. And we'll tax the shit out of the super rich to pay for it.

BTW...you need to move to Venezuela :D

Doubled? Why double it? Just set the minimum wage at $500k per year? If the government taxes 95% of it, the person will still have $25k in wages, and the tax money will help support everyone else.

There will be no such thing as an "employee" anymore and a head of lettuce will cost $100 dollars, but it's okay. The government will put in a luxury sales tax - meaning that $300 sack of potatoes is a luxury good and taxes will make it $450. Everyone will be able to afford it - they make $500k per year.
