Interesting morning for New Yorkers apparently...

and no warning from the FAA

NEW YORK - A Boeing 747 used by the president was escorted over lower Manhattan by an Air Force fighter jet Monday as part of a government photo opportunity and training mission, causing a brief panic among office workers near where hijacked passenger jets crashed into the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Workers from several office buildings poured out onto the streets before they learned that the flights were harmless.

I think the FAA was doing as told and maybe the WH Press Sec could have said some thing around 930AM?
Not enough time to plan any thing by a bad guy but planty of time to avoid most of the panic those folks felt.

You know we are going to end up in the other forum.;)

Matt

An Instructors first concern is student safety.
So, start being safe, first!!!

Asshats!

The idea that their flying over metropolitan NY or Los Angeles with their after burners on is going to make us feel more "safe"!?? The sound of freedom -Hah!-

My a/c is the tactical equivalent of a VW bug but heaven forbid that I stray near those hallowed halls within the holiest Beltway.

Timmy McVey is laughing his ass off at these jerks and their misdirected efforts. Why didn't the same workers bail out of their buildings when a big fat U-Haul broke down on the street out front? Because the FAA, TSA, EIEIO and alphabet guys didn't tell them to be afraid. No; they tell them to fear my a/c capable of carrying a massive 600# of who-knows-what to deliver a gnat like blow to the urban scaredycats. Ohhh Nooo... Run awaaaay. It's a Cessna!!!

It is part of the new administration:

A Lieutenant goes to a General's office and says:

Lt: Sir, I think we ought to buzz the Statue of Liberty in AF1.
Gen: why?
Lt: It would be a training mission. We could have fighter jets flank the heavy. Not only that, they could take some waay cool pictures.
Gen: Ok - as long as there are cool pictures for the revamped whitehouse web site. But let's not tell anyone. Everyone will be so surprised.

During the flight the pilots say
Captain: Hey look at all those people rushing out of the buildings to wave at us.
Co-Pilot: Told ya - it would make great pictures.
Navigator: We got them skeered now.

President Obama: “To help build a new foundation for the 21st century, we need to reform our government so that it is more efficient, more transparent, and more creative."

efficient - nope - lost that one
more transparent - nope lost that one
more creative - well maybe a point on that one.

To whoever made the call on that operation - What were you thinking??
They burned a lot of money, I want to see the photos of AF1 with NYC in the background.

I hope someone counts up how many calls were made to 911 and whose real emergency call got locked out.

Back in aught-two, I was busily working away in my office in downtown Los Angeles. And I heard a whoosh. I look out ajnd see an F-14 and F-4 flying out toward the Valley.

A couple of minutes later, "WHOOSH" the other way and heading toward San Berdu. A few minutes later, they come back again for another flyby. I then decided to relieve myself of my post on the 22d floor of the One Wilshire Building and get the hell outta there. When I returned about an hour later it was all clear.

That evening I learned that they were practicing fly-bys are Chavez Ravine for opening day. Fucking assholes.

Two weeks later that same F-4 augered in at Pt. Mugu.

My wife is hotter than your wife.

Paul:

Shit rolls downhill. The Commander in Chief is in charge of the Air Force. Some dumbass staffer probably had this idea.

This one is on the POTUSam

By ALL accounts he didn't even know about it. Nor, should he normally be concerned with a simple photo op of AF1. Go to any web site of any of the military demonstration teams; Thunderbirds, Blue Angels, whoever . . . you really think the President gets involved every time they do a flyby of a landmark for photos?

No. They have military press offices that do that all the flippin' time.

I get it:

Stupid ass things done during the past 8 years = Bush's fault.

Stupid ass things done now means Obama had no idea about it.

I guess Obama's fuck up during a press conference today was the teleprompter's fault. Afterall, he's infallible.

Correct me if I'm wrong: Doesn't the USAF report to the CinC?

Um, nope. It was Louis Caldera, director of the White House Military Office that authorized the mission (and the now canceled DC flyover).
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright

Isn't this the same administration who chastised auto execs for using private jets?

I gues they never heard of photoshop [:/]

I really don't have a problem with them wanting to take some kick-ass pictures. It's their handling of the situation that makes me think "WTF"...

The White House Military Office, among other things, tasks the aircraft used by the executive branch (not to be confused with Special Air Missions). The person currently running it is a politician, not a Soldier, Sailor, Airman or Marine (see my other post in the "FAA" thread), and he is also not capable of exploiting a positive public relations situation -- which is what this fly over could have been.

From what I read on AP this morning, President Obama was furious about how the mission was carried out (an aid to Mayor Bloomberg is in deep sh*t too).
