Christian abusers force underage women to marry

Polygamy is great. I wish it was legal.

You do realize that when groups of women live together for an extended time their cycles tend to synchronize? Well, at least it's a theory.

I dunno, in any case it doesn't sound all that pleasant to me. ;)

Wow...this is the most intolerant thread I've seen. This Jeffs jamoke is a deviant, irrespective of his espoused faith.

I'm a little disappointed in you guys. (the mods - who are 99% liberal and should be leading the tolerance charge).

I'm not LDS, and have my issues with that faith, but you guys sound like a lynch mob.

If they weren't white Americans - this conversation would never have started.

based on college i'd say its a fact...

also having juggled a few girlfriends at one time, it would have to be some VERY close women for it to be feasible.. and damn.. where would you find the energy once you were in your 40s??

tbph i think the concept of 'family marriages' is much more workable than polygamy..

10 for 10 on the irony scale...

that whoosh you heard when you opened the thread was you missing the (rather unsubtle but clearly effective) point Bill was making...

Let me assure you that I've seen much, much worse. This is nothing but a tempest in a teapot compared to the ones we've dealt with and taken action on. It certainly doesn't rise to the "starting a riot" kind of level we'd normally jump on.

My personal line is based loosely on "would it hold up in a court of law as being actionable." This is hardly that.

Not sure what you mean by "Jeffs is a deviant, irrespective of his faith." Jeffs is held as the prophet, seer, and revelator, president of the church, and CEO of the UEP, or United Effort Plan, which is the corporate arm of the church. He is not a deviant by their religious standards, only by the standards of general society. His followers herald him as the greatest man in the universe, superceded only by Joseph Smith, Jesus Christ, and God.

As far as "this wouldn't have happened if they weren't white Americans..."
This discussion would take place if Asians, Hispanics, African-Americans, Native Americans, or any other race/culture in America was marrying 14 year old girls to 40 year old men by force or religious influence.
Do you believe it's acceptable for 14 year old girls to be taken to Mexico or Canada to be married to men older than 18? Is it acceptable for a religion to condone and encourage, even preach such activity in our society?

I don't have a problem at all with polygamy, I am friends with many people engaged in the activity. I do have a problem with the religious implications and pressure placed on very young girls, and the banishment of young men for purposes of leaving young girls for the older men (Google "Lost boys, polygamy).
There are a lot of unbiased/report-based articles found on RickRoss website. On that page, you'll find several stories going back over the years about young girls being forced into marriage.

Then you may have missed the point here. The original post was a satire of several poster's attitudes towards another religion.

It is, of course, absurd to condemn an entire religion because of what a few nuts do in the name of religion. That's true whether the religion in question is christianity or islam.

I'll buy that for a dollar Bill.

And to Doug, no, I do not condone it, I missed the satire and viewed it as painting with a broad brush.

Jeffs is a self-declared prophet. Big difference.

Now, having said that - that is one of my issues with the LDS faith. I have a hard time with the idea that the boss man is a prophet and the "window to heaven." But most of the works of the mainstream LDS are very good for humnity as a whole. They do some good things...and their welfare program for members on hard times is stellar...the Fed should model it.

But hey...I could be wrong about my reservations. (see attachment)

edit to add: My girlfriend is LDS - and trust me - she condemns the hell out of it. You should have heard the un-LDS things that she said she would do to the guy

That is the point DSE does not seem to get. No one in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints condones the marriage of young girls to grown men. Jeffs is a sexual deviant and there is nothing religious about him. You can hate the Morman faith all you want. But don't try to say that my church condones what the FLDS church does. They are in no way connected and we do not condone their actions. So go and and post some propaganda that says different but if people want to know what Mormons believe you should ask one.
The most terrifying words in the English language are: I'm from the government and I'm here to help.

I tend to agree with this. I'm more or less a non-believer myself, but I don't think the LDS church is just like the FLDS church, which believes in polygamy.

My wife is a Morman and I've been in the LDS church a few times. I have to admit they have some crazy beliefs, but I can't see how those beliefs are any more crazy than what other churches believe in. I've met a ton of honest, hard working, Mormans. Many of them would do anything to help you and I'm sure many of them would never condone Polygamy.

I have to admit that some of the arguments against Mormanism are interesting though. I'll have to use some of them the next time I am arguing with my wife or some of the missionaries that often stop over[:/]....Steve1

I've got no problem with living/sleeping with whoever you want. I do have a problem forcing a 14 year old to marry and sleep with a religious leader.

I completely agree. The 14 year old should not be having sex with ANY religious leaders B|

Bill, I would've expected you to at least know the difference between a splinter sub-cult and mainline Christianity. Apparently you don't.

But then you're a greenie, so you don't have to be held accountable for anything you say, no matter how inaccurate or just plain offensive.

I'm confused here....they're *all* subcults from "mainline" Christianity. Catholics consider themselves the original Christians, but today...Christians claim Catholics aren't Christian. Mormon leaders and authors have written hundreds of books in order to 'prove' to the world that Mormons are Christians. But Christians claim Mormons aren't Christian. So....are Catholics "mainline?" Are Mormons? Baptists? (and if so, are American Baptists, Northern Baptists, Southern Baptists mainline? Or just one of the three? Two of the three?) Are A of G "mainline?" Who gets to decide? Is it based on membership numbers? Date of origin? Thickest library?

AWL71, it seems we agree that FLDS and LDS are *exactly* the same excepting that the FLDS think it's acceptable to marry 14 year old girls to grown men. This is true. In the LDS faith, the young woman must be at least 16, and it's not forced (so far as I know).
FLDS practices in this life, what the current LDS church practices in the temple and spiritual life. Marrying multiple women to one man. Women are chattel to both groups. This is demonstrated in one small part by how the LDS faith requires the man to know his wife/wives spiritual name to bring her through the veil in the temple, but she is not permitted to know her husband's spiritual name. Women and children are property. Property to be cared for, to be sure, but still property.

Other than the Roman Catholic church, did you know that members of the LDS faith have the highest arrest and conviction rate for child molestation and child pornography of any religion in the USA? Quite true (source, Utah State Attorney General's Office). So many that Anderson Cooper and CNN did a special story on the subject. This is due in part, to Utah citizens having the highest percentage of Internet connectivity of any state in the USA.

In other words, what LDS church canons may say, and what their followers may do, are two very different things.

Jeffs is no more a "self-proclaimed prophet" than Gordon B. Hinckley. Jeffs ascended to the throne in the exact way that Joseph Smith indicated it should be done; by blood, by inheritance, by birthright. Which is also how the Church of Christ (Formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints) have done it. Their prophet is a *direct* blood descendant of Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith's wife was never a "Mormon" and split from the current theology when her husband was killed. It was made *very* clear that the ascendancy to the presidency of the church should come from Smith's seed. Brigham Young just happened to be a better politician.
But now we're way off topic, so to bring us back...
Joseph Smith was convicted of having sex with a young girl (14 years of age).
Joseph Smith is the founder of the current LDS faith, which has approximately 150 splinter factions of various sizes.
Brigham Young, first leader after Smith of the current LDS Church, married two women younger than 16 years of age, both after he was past 50 years of age.
So did John Taylor.
So did Lorenzo Snow.
So did Wilford Woodruff.
So did Joseph F. Smith (who married his 14 year old cousin and had two mentally disabled children by her).
In other words, had it not been for the Edmunds-Tucker Act, there would be no FLDS church, and 14 year old girls would still be wedding 50 year old men in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints even today.
And...according to the Utah State Attorney General's office, at least 2.5% of those attending LDS services and practicing members of the mainstream LDS faith in Utah, are polygamists.

Of course there's a difference. The original post was a satire of the many "Muslims are a death cult" postings. The crimes of one sect of a religion do not tar everyone in that religion, whether the religion is christianity or islam - and whether the perpetrator is named after a prophet or an apostle.
