Florida Power and Light are FUCKING INCOMPETENTS

>Yeah, for 28 hours now.... Thanks bill, it's all clear to me now.

I think they might be a little busy lately. How long would it take you to replace a power pole?

>The ease, low cost, and feasibility of this must be why I and all the
> renters I know are doing this by the score.

It's a piece of cake. I put my first system in in a studio apartment. It's about as hard as putting together a stereo system; it takes about six wires. If it's important to you, you'll do it. If you don't care to do it, that's also fine - but then your power problems are just that, your problems.

Somehow I have a feeling that after all this is over, despite your animated diatribe as to how evil the power company bureacracy is, you will meekly mail your next payment in. Talk is cheap.

If it makes you feel any better, which it won't, but anyways, my freind's grandparents didn't have power for THREE WEEKS after Charley hit. As of right now, my parents haven't had power for a week. Another friends parents had their house destroyed.

Quit whining, and take it as some time to enjoy life the way they did 100 years ago, without all of the technology we have now.

Well, now, bill, I have to grant that this is a completely fair question, since I am a trained electric power technician, with a crew of four, and an FP&L crew truck complete with one of those big augers and spools of cable and everything... :S

Gee, and in that I must alone among all dropzone.commers.

Tell me more about this system you're talking about (are you talking about where you make your own electricity somehow and sell the extra back to the company?) and what I should expect it to cost, and maybe I'll consider doing it. Who knows?

Trust me, my diatribe is NOT representative of my overall attitude during this whole ordeal, and if you knew me in person you'd already know that. I recognize that I was blessed with a minimal amount of damage, and inconvenience, compared to many many people. (I also didn't build a house on the shore of the ocean, or one out of aluminum foil, for starters, but that's a different issue.) In fact, when the power first went off, I accepted it as an inevitability and I went into "camping mode" complete with my Princeton Tec Aurora LED Headlamp and everything, and rode it out. I didn't get really pissed off until I had my power restored in record time only to have it yanked OFF again for what I consider to be a bullshit reason.

How bullshit of a reason is it if that power pole was to fall over with live electric on it and burn a house down, or worse kill some one? And it could have been prevented by just installing a new pole.

I lived in ice county Ohio growing up. Ice would pile up on the lines ant poles would bend, break or lines would snap. A bent pole was a major issue since even though it might look minor, the damage was often quite severe.

Are you a trained specialist that can certify that the bent pole provides no danger to anything? Or are you putting your needs above the safety of others?

My folks in West Palm Beach lost power at 9am on Sat (9/4) and have just been informed that power will be turned back on at....7:45pm....on Friday....NEXT Friday (9/17)

That's 322.75 hours, so things could be worse.

They have my sympathy. I hope I don't end up in the same boat.

FWIW, when Hurricane Gloria hit Long Island back in what, '86, my family was without power for a full week +. We had gas heat and cooking, so our friends came by all week to take showers and cook the food they had that would have spoiled. Back then, I used to blow my hair dry (hey, it was the '80s!) and life sucked.

I'm lucky that the coldest the water gets in Florida here is still tepid, so I can take a "cold" shower that really isn't too bad, since I'm stuck with electric (non-functioning) cooking and heat.

anyone in FL whining about a few weeks loss of electricity needs to go experience Iraq for a bit.....

Whoa! D'you feel that? It was like a..a...thread drift or somethin'! :D

Okay, I'll bite:
Do you mean as a U.S. soldier, or an Iraqi, or Saddam Hussein at the height of his power, or what?

For my part, I can't see a comparison: over here, it is not unreasonable when people pay money for a utility -- part of which is used to assure prompt repair capability as well as durable materiel to withstand a hurricane as much as is practicable -- and expect satisfaction. When you go somewhere like Iraq, all bets are off, and if you told someone you were disappointed that they didn't provide reliable electricity and water, they'd look at you like you were crazy, and they'd be right.

i mean anyone...right now...sorry been talking to a lot of people about Iraq lately via IM most of them are still there.....

i'm talking about standard of living period. The minor inconvenience you have from a few weeks without power is NOTHING...absolutely nothing to the way millions of people live everyday but just wait... how much more whining will we get from spoiled floridans complaining about cold showers... try no shower... try no water, no gas or kerosene to heat your house... in fact try sitting in a line 16 miles long to get 5 gallons of gasoline...

to many Americans have NO perspective... "give ME give ME give ME!! fix my shit now! I dont have a clue how or why it works but FIX IT!!!!! why don’t i have a life of comfort and leisure?" do you really think the pittance you pay in utility bills paid for the infrastructure you enjoy?? please.....

When you're bitching about the price of elec, think. I was helping build one in DeBary/Sanford on the St .Johns river right B4 9/11 for Fla. Power. The bill was 1 BILLION dollars and it was only a third done. Bitch at the the greedy (construction) corporations.[:/] They power companys have a lot of bills to pay too. It isn't like they are Enron or something.

If I'm reading you right, no one is ever justified in being dissatisfied with their current condition -- much less complaining a bit about it, because there is always someone who has it worse.

That's sophistry.

Let's see what happens if this notion holds up.

You, Zenister, go with your date into a fine restaurant, dressed to the nines. You each order the Surf and Turf. When it comes out, your steak is cooked so much that the innermost meat is brown, the outside is charred, and you find it inedible. Her lobster is so overcooked that it has shriveled inside to a tough, stringy mass. The tail looks more like what should come out of one of the skinny legs.

You telling me you won't complain to your waiter, and have the meals sent back, because you're aware of the fact that there are starving children in Ethiopia who would eat it all and smile and wish for more??

We are not unjustified in feeling dissatisfaction when a standard to which we are used to living suddenly and precipitously drops. We are subject to conditioning, and we are certainly not used to comparing our day-to-day living conditions to those of some faraway culture we never experience or interact with, just for the perspective of it. That's a ridiculous standard to hold people to. Do you wear shoes that are too tight just because some people can't afford shoes? Do you drive a shitbox car just because some people have to hoof it?

I have never said that things couldn't be worse. What I am disputing is that we have to have lived at the worst, bottom-most level for our dissatisfaction with current conditions to be justified or defensible.

Are you saying that it's just Americans who live an "I-don't-know-how-it-works-but-want-it-fixed-now" lifestyle? French people, Italians, Germans, Brits, Chinese, Japanese -- all these people know how their calculators, cellular phones, automobiles, aircraft, televisions, refrigerators work?? Amazing!

If anything, what you point out is true of people around the world -- certainly not just Americans, and even more certainly not just Floridians.

wow you are rapidly becoming the king of straw man arguments here, your example is so far off the mark it's not worth attempting to address.....

your certainly not justified in whining like a spoiled 3 year old and wishing death and dismemberment on those who are attempting to restore your pampered way of life... particularly when there is no human agency to 'fault' at all, simply the fact that nature sometimes hammers the FL coastline..... don’t like it? DONT LIVE THERE!!! It isn’t the first time and it wont be the last…learn to adjust or stop whining….

if you cant adjust to a few days, or even weeks of minor discomfort?? well... i think your first post in this thread adequately expresses the level of pampering you've grown to expect, and exactly how you react when that standard drops due to causes beyond anyone's control.......:S

Yeah... We Brits make all that stuff at home. All we need is some earth... And a Small Aubergine!:P

Anyway, didn't you buy a copy of "How To Fix It" by Kaylee Frye?

No!!?

Shame that there'll be no copies available just now;)

Nah Mike, right idea, wrong legume, a small lemon works better.B|

"all these people know how their calculators, cellular phones, automobiles, aircraft, televisions, refrigerators work?? "

All we do is plug them into a reliable power source and away we go......

You are obviously not paying attention.
My first post about this came not when the power went out -- I expected that.

I posted only when the power was RESTORED, and then SHUT OFF DELIBERATELY because some fuckin' PUSSY down the street got all afraid of the leaning power pole. THAT is when FPL shut off our RESTORED power. And they didn't get it fixed -- which would be an easy fix since they know EVERYTHING ELSE IS WORKING FINE IN THIS AREA. We're entering our second day of NEEDLESS power loss. THAT'S what I'm pissed off about. So I got home tonight for the second night in a row to find no power.

And to make it worse, my landlady has a huge ass generator BRAAAPPPPING away about 20 feet from my fucking bedroom window. And it's 10 feet from HER fucking bedroom window, so why it didn't occur to her that maybe the two bars of butter left in her fridge from the FIRST outage are not worth running the genny to save is beyond me, if the cost is the noise through the fucking night.

Dude, I don't care if you don't sympathize, or don't understand, or don't read with full comprehension, or don't approve of my righteous rage. But I'll bet you're no prize to live with when something YOU expect to be a certain way fails to meet your pleasure.

Either that, or you're SO much better than I am.

Oh yeah... I remember now... That 240V power supply with the NATIONAL supply grid that's specced to stand up to the weather.:)
Ya know, yer lemon's ok for the low voltage stuff, like in cars, but ye canna' beat the Aubergine for surge protection and watta' resistance. I wouldnae swim in my wristwatch if I used a Lemon to make it... And I feel a lot safer under my Aubergine reserve:P.

I just drifted by.....Didn't realise this thread was meant to be your personal domain.
Dude if you can't take people posting on threads, don't post them in the first place.
