Can you figure this out?

Recommended Posts

This is an extra credit question for a class of mine:

Three guys decide to take a little vacation to Florida to have some fun in the sun. They arrive at the hotel and are in the process of checking in at the front desk. The total bill is $30, so each guy gives the clerk a $10 bill and off to their room they go. A little while later the desk clerk realizes that he overcharged the guys in that room…it actually should have only been a total of $25 for the room.

So, off the clerk goes to give back the money that he accidentally overcharged the guys. But on his way to the room he realized he can't divide the $5 three ways, so he decides to keep $2 for his trouble and gives each guy back $1.

So here's the actual numbers:

Each guy actually paid $9
3 guys times $9 = $27 total
The clerk kept $2
$27 + $2 = $29

The original price was $30….what happened to the other dollar?

Since I suck at math, logic , and anything else that I can't bullshit my way through, I am completely lost. Let's hear from the smart people!

the math is wrong .... you're taking money that spent and adding it to money that was kept...

each guy spent $9 so they paid $27, but the clerk kept $2, so the manager got $25, which is correct since the price of the room is $25.

you can't add 27+2...

Technically, each guy didn't pay $9. Yes they each gave $10 (for the total $30) but the hotel only kept $25. So each guy paid roughly $8.33 for the room. The bellhop or whomever kept $2 for himself, and gave each guy back $1.
So here's the math $8.33 x 3= $24.99
Bellhop keeps his $2
Each guy gets back $1
So $24.99 + $2 +$3 = $29.99 Just round up the extra cent...the $1 didn't go anywhere, it's just buried in the wording.

Don't know if my answer is right, that's just the way I see it.

ARE YOU SERIOUS YOU CAN'T FIGURE THAT OUT ??

Yes. As I mentioned before, I'm not the brightest bulb in the box. :|

edited to add: and I'm okay with that:D

Each actually paid $8.33. 25/3. Then they got the $1 back which put them at $9.33. One of them actually paid $9.34.

nuh uh. their wording is trying to confuse ya.

"The clerk KEPT $2
$27 + $2 = $29"

that's wrong. the clerk kept 27.... the room + 2 bucks. returned three.
30-2=28
25+3=28

shut up, Piis!!:D

So, I guess the answer to the riddle is:

What extra dollar??!!!

And people wonder why I look at them sometimes with a blank stare!!:D:S

it's a stupid riddle because it's faulty wording from the start.. no logic involved. the math people were trying to make it way too complicated-- sorry if i ruined your thread stewie:D

The room costs $25 + $2 clerk surcharge = $27
The guys paid $30 and each got $1 change for a total of $3
$30 -$3 = $27

In another fashion...

If it was 2 guys who paid $30.
It was a $20 room, so the clerk was given $10.
The clerk gave each of them $2 and kept $6.

New numbers:

Each guy actually paid $13 (15 - the 2 returned)
2 guys times $13 = $26 total
The clerk kept $6

$26 + $6 = $32

The original price was $30….what did those other $2 come from ?

There was $30 in the till when the guys headed to the room.

$5 was taken out to give back.

That leaves $25 in the till, $3 back to the guys, and $2 to the huckster bellhop with no ethics.

Still a total of $30.

edit: Why the fuck you gotta make this so complicated?! :D
