Dropzone.com Merges with Rockclimbing.com

Recommended Posts

Actually, it sounds like the code behind rockclimbing.com is falling over, and that it needs a
thorough overhaul. Maybe their servers are seriously overloaded too. And that the original owner didn't
have the time/money/expertise to fix the problems. So Sangiro bought the site.... ...at least, that's the
way I read it.

That's about the way I read it, too. At first I was trying to figure out which way it was going - was rock
climbing going to be moved to dropzone's servers/pipe/board engine or the other way around? But I
think you've got it right.

This has probably been taken care of already, but my only suggestion for the principals is: Get everything
in writing. I help run a community site that works on a volunteer basis - no ad banners or anything.
There was a related site that lost their hosting on short notice, and we took them in. Things went OK
for a while, but then some of the features on their site took more bandwidth than anticipated. In
particular, one video clip got slashdotted, causing a US$2000+ phone bill - the normal bill was about
US$200. It's not fun to have to code in a redirect to close off over half a site's content, but the
bleeding had to stop somehow. This incident caused a lot of bad feelings between the people involved -
one of them still won't talk to me. Since dropzone and presumably rockclimbing are working with "real
money" - or at least selling ad banners and so on - they are probably run more like a "real business",
with contracts, profit/loss statements, etc, so getting things in writing will probably be second nature
to them.

I looked at rockclimbing's front page and one of their forum threads about the merger. It seems like
their pages (phpBB) load more slowly than dropzone (Gossamer Forum) but someone in the thread
over there said the same thing about dropzone! I can't tell much about the relative server load from
here; my ping to dropzone is 92 ms (Vancouver, BC, I think) and rockclimbing is 55 ms (California,
I think.) No uptimes for either site at netcraft; they're both using Linux/Apache. Merging the user
lists "should" be relatively simple, but getting the rockclimbing archives into Gossamer Forum will
probably be interesting. GF can apparently do imports, but it doesn't list phpBB as one of the things
it understands.

What do we have in common with rock climbing?

The two communities are more alike than you may think. I know several skydivers, who used to go away to climb every weekend. (I used to cllimb, as well.) The two sports require focus, concentration, coordination, strength, perserverance.

Both are very social sports. Everyone knows everyone in both of these communities. Also, climbers/jumpers are quite accepting of each other because of their shared bond/love of skydiving or climbing. Also, both groups of people embrace newbies. The experienced in both sports tend to teach/help others to discover their sport because they love it so much and because skydiving/climbing is not something that everyone can relate to.

Both sports use a lot of mental focus and visualization. Both sports are also somewhat spiritually giving to a person. It's about the elements (earth/rock and wind/earth) and you. You learn to work with the elements, not to try to conquer them.

I think that each of these sports in various ways, compliments the other.

Congratulations, and thank you for the merge. I much pefer DZ.com over RC.com due to the organized layout, visuals, speed and ease of use. Still, I expect that you will be helping to implement good changes both there and here, if needed. Congrats, again! B|

Nice, HH.

Just one question...

Are pointless boobie posts welcome over there? ;)

Yes. In fact, we at Rockclimbing.com welcome all forms of porn, mainstream and deviant. B|

This is all kinda funny, huh? I'm reminded of various sci-fi stories, in which somebody travels to a strange parallel universe where everything is the same, but with one key change. Weeeeeiiirrrrd...

Hi, Jay Young here. I'm the content editor at RC.com, which means I edit and write for the Articles section and the Gear Guide. I'll echo what my co-hort, Phil, said... the deal is done and we're a glass-half-full kinda crowd, so I'm looking forward to what we can do together.

While I'm likely still considered a wuffo, I do have one jump under my belt. But, it was a long time ago and it was tandem. :$ As I understand it, like Santa Claus, the Easter bunny and the Tooth Fairy, "perfectly good airplanes" don't really exist.

Jay

PS - Where the hell's the "Submit" button?! Is it "Post Reply"? Weeeeiiiiirrrrrd...

Gotta love a guy with a positive attitude! B| I'm looking forward to seeing what Sangiro has in mind also. Change and expanding one's horizons are always a good thing!

I take my kids to the indoor gym here in FL when I can (there isn't a lot to climb outdoors around here!) and we were all set to climb in NC last spring until that damn Beech Mountain broke my wrists while I was snowboarding! >:( I've promised them we will be back, so I hope to learn a lot from reading your site.

according to Daniel Du Toit of dropzone.com

Who is this?

Hey everyone, let me clear up some confusion and introduce myself a little better...

To date I've been the behind-the-scenes partner of sangiro. We've known each other for a long time, even before the existence of this site. In fact, I have a small part in the history of dropzone.com, which was to "introduce" sangiro to the web, more than a decade ago.

I'll be taking the reigns at rockclimbing.com, similar to what sangiro is doing here. Together we'll look at finding and leveraging synergies between the two sites. Btw, I'm very excited about the way you've welcomed the climbing bunch around your bonfire since the announcement. You're equally welcome to come hang out on the other side of course!

I'm a decent rock climber, but a beginner skydiver... I've stepped out of a plane only once before. Nevertheless, I'm keen to change that. So if anyone is willing to teach me to sit-fly, in return I'll share some very interesting stories about sangiro after a few beers at the next boogie. B|

That's a fair comment... ;)

Looks like the word "merge" is creating a bit of confusion with some folks. We plan to merge the operations of both sites and to a large extend the technologies. We do not plan to merge the actual sites. Those who are concerned about that need not be. It will remain 2 sites and if you choose you can continue to hang out here and never have any interaction with the folks over there.

There were some questions above as to how you will benefit from the merger seeing as skydiving and rockclimbing is so "different". I for one think the actual sports have more in common than some may think, but to find the actual benefits you have to look more at the tools needed to run a good adventure site site rather than how the sports compare side by side.

Some examples:

If someone on RC.com develops a logging application to log their climbs, it would be a very small step to tweak that and give you an application to log your jumps online. You benefit.

If someone on RC.com writes and algorithm that allows them to compare gear by listing and comparing manufaturing data, it would again be pretty easy to bring that home in the skydiving world and you'll benefit.

At RC.com you can categorize your photos when you upload them and in doing so allocate them to a specific route or climb. If we had that over here we would have been able to show you all photos related to Skydive Arizona when you viewed that listing in the DZ database and still leave the actual images in your own personal galleries.

....there are many more examples like these.

Another question was asked about banners: "Will we start seeing North Face banners?" In the spirit of openness, the short answer is: You may. This was always the case though so there's nothing new there. Most of you have been here long enough to know my attitude towards commercializing this site. A very small percentage of each page are allocated to advertising. We will continue to push to fill as much of our ad space with companies from the skydiving industry, but in the end we need to be able to make a living or look at alternative models to keep this site going. I can assure you you'll like almost all of those even less.

Give this a bit of time to mature. Don't worry about radical changes to your world, especially not over here. Have some fun with our new friends! I am very confident that we'll be able to bring a lot of cool new stuff to both communities a lot faster and a lot more efficiently than we have in the past. :)

It would be interesting to know how many new users were added to the rc.com website after the announcement.

Also, how many were added to dz.com as well.

B|

who cares, rock climbers have cooties. Wonder if they've got fluff in their forums... Can't be as bad as the bootay kissing we get here in the Bonfire. Must investigsate. :D

Please do not take Jay at his word on the above points. The TOS on rc.com specifically forbids posting porn, boobies etc. By doing so you may invoke the ire of the mods who can institute tarpits and bans.

The reasons for this policy is that we run a G rated site. We do have many minors visit the site and we try to keep the site work computer friendly. Many workplaces have filters set to a very low tolerance for porn etc. By posting these types of things rc.com will be very much less accessible from work computers. We cannot have a subsequent rise in the productivity of the various economies where users are based now can we, that just would not do at all. B|

We remedy that by putting a "NSFW" (not safe for work) on the post. I understand about the minors though.

I'd rather see dz.com merge with cuteasianchicks.com. Much more overlap...I'll draw you a Venn diagram to support the business case.

I think this development is bizarre to say the least: maybe you got laid by a rockclimbing hottie ?:) And no, this is not a personal attack: just hoping for the best for you.

do I have a chance of being one now? :)

Good.
Maybe now dropzone.com will be updated more frequently
and have fewer gramatical and spelling errors in it's articles.
