I don't get it. #3

Recommended Posts

Well it looks like you can talk about fucking Matt Damon but you can't talk about fucking people in general. Am I missing something? Do we need to replace the word fuck with carnal knowledge. Do we need to come up with a list of topics that are not going to offend the advertisers?

Don't get me wrong. I too think the bonfire is a better place without videos of people eating shit and pictures of charred mutilated bodies. I don't think a thread about sport sex is anyway near that catagory.

Yeah, yeah, yeah I know who owns this site and I'm willing to play by the rules if I know what they are. I think the Open Forums post leave alot to interpret. Do we need to make this adult skydiver forum child friendly? I'm not being a smart ass here. I truely want to know.

At first, I thought I understood, but am finding myself confused as well. It is appearing that the only thing we can safetly post about is fluffy kittens and news articles that are not harsh enough to spark a speakers corner debate.

The "rules" here of what is acceptable and not acceptable are very vague and anything that *crosses the line* but isn't neccesarily in the rules as a no-no, get's the axe with no explaination.

If you DO post something that gets trashed and you don't know why, you're supposed to just sit back and shut your mouth because this is "not your house" blah blah blah and the mods can do whatever they want. And don't you dare "challenge" them. All that does is leave people wondering why something they posted wasn't acceptable. It doesn't solve the problem (i.e. letting them know why or what in particular was wrong). I've seen it so many times happen to so many people, myself included.

I absolutly agree with everyones post here so far, very confusing, and takes some of the fun out of the bonfire. Have the advertisers been complaining/offended or is it a situation that they "might"?

If all the whiners just go back to rec.skydiving, it might actually make a comeback!

Actually, if you want to see why this site is moderated, switch to rec.skydiving for a while. You could arrange a boogie over there! How about the week that the WFFC would be, all the bonfire whiners just post on rec.skydiving instead of here?

I came from Rec.skydiving. I know what it was like over there and I don't think DZ.com is anywhere close to it. I'm siply saying the new guidelines need to be clarified. If some of us need to find a new place to play then so be it. As I said before, I don't mind playing be the rules if I know what they are.

Because one thread relates to a comedy act (I assume it was a repost of the sarah silverman show...i didnt open it), and the other is a thread about who you want to have casual sex with. One is (i assume) a link to a video of a song, the other is a thread that will tend to get a lot of short responses, which bogs down the server, and is on a "questionable" topic.

Course I'm not a moderator so what do I know? I'm MUCH worse on my own site than the moderators are here. :)

One makes this place a lot more like Juicy Campus than the other. It's pretty clear to me which one.

My best guess as a non-moderator is that all this questioning isn't going to get anyone any closer to understanding "the rules." Fact is that there's probably not a list of things that you can and can't do, there's just a general philosophy and atmosphere that the owner of the site tries to maintain, and he's got several people that he asks to help him maintain it. They're all human beings (well, I'm not 100% sure about billvon, I think he's got at least a few mechanical parts, but I digress...) and are all going to interpret things slightly differently and it's probably going to vary from day to day and even from hour to hour, and will vary based on their mood, their tolerance, their patience, on how recently they've had to clean up a similar mess, and whether any of us like it or not, on who is posting it.

It's kind of like employee dress codes. I've worked at places that have had them. I've worked at places that have tried to spell out what's allowed and what's not allowed, with great detail, and those places have usually been the ones where the dress codes have failed most miserably because everyone tries to push the envelope around the edges. I've also worked at places where the expectation is set that employees will dress in a professional manner, and the culture of the company is what enforces how people dress, and no HR person has ever had to write a policy saying "you can wear this but you can't wear that."

Damn! Now that I can't post just anything I want on the Bonfire, I have to find something else to do. Maybe I'll go free Tibet or something!
Is Tibet moderated?:|

Wow.. someone actually understands how things really work. :)
Moderating is a lot like that famous saying about the differences between art and porn. You are not sure what is what until you see it then you know if its acceptable or not.

We have been given a direction that we are to steer the forums towards. The end destination is not defined and neither are the decisions we need to make to keep the forums moving towards that goal. From time to time a major redirection or course correction needs to be issued and Sangiro is really good about helping us keep the end goal clear. Some people on the forums like to be roadblocks to that goal and others are happy to go with the flow. Questioning the decisions we make are fine, we are only human and we do make decisions on both our history on the site and in real life and we also tryt to see where we see threads will moving towards in the near future. For thread that are only going to cause issues if we know we are going to be offline we might just help to eliminate the issue before it flares up too large of an issue.

For the most part we actually edit or remove a very small amount (around .1%) of postings and the vast number of those are by the same people over and over again. We are not trying to "quiet anyone" or to scare people away from posting but we are asking you to think a bit before you post.

Nah, I was only guessing, since no matter how many phishing schemes I try, I can't get your password out of you.

No matter how many people "QUIT" it will never be back like it was in the really *good* days that I loved. We'll see if the improvements help. We'll see. I kinda miss that cocheese guy already.
