Do I really believe that these rugby players are some of the hardest hitters ... no. But calling Jammer one of the hardest hitters in football is more than a stretch.

Both sports are incredibly physical. Saying otherwise proves you know nothing about that sport. Also, with the exception of only the biggest linemen in the NFL I think you would be very surprised by both the speed and stamina of football players.

I have a lot of respect for rugby and think it is awesome to watch. I just wish it was easier to find on TV over here.

Oh boy [:/] Do I really have to put :P into the thread title? Pity there isn't a tongue in cheek icon!

A concept that many americans just don't seem to get (a bit like cricket :P)

you sat in front of the TV for 4 hours for WHAT? 11 Minutes of play? If it werent for NFL lawyers and copyright laws Youtube would kill football as a media sport.

Isn't it a bit strange that only people who come from countries which play rugby that are the ones calling american football pussies? How many NFL games have you been to in order to make an assumption?

I've been to several, I thought it was an interesting game until I saw it live. OMG, tedious is not the word, 5 mins of play lasted 45 mins as they kept changing one team for another. I doubt that they have the stamina to play rugby. As for crash helments and massive padding what the hells that all about?

I'm raising the BULLSHIT card to the above.

Same here..... there's no where near 5 minutes of actual play:P

It seems to me to would be very unwise to assume that just because they don't, it must mean they can't. :P

Except... it kinda does.

No-one can do everything. You can't specialise in power and keep your endurance. Time that Footballers spend training for endurance capabilities would be time wasted because they don't need it on the field of play.

No assumption involved, notice the keywords TESTED and PROVE.

Training methods for endurance are entirely different for power or speed, NFL players are extremely specialized, obscenely so even IMO it would be a far better sporting event if everyone had to play every position at some point as the TEAM would shine through more than a couple of superstar positions.

I will flat out admit that football is a game of sprints. In fact, no lineman should ever have to move more than 10 yards (albeit 10 yards pushing an incredibly large man who is pushing in the exact opposite direction). That being said, your logic only seems to reiterate the fallacy I was trying to point out. If rugby players are so big, how do they train for size and endurance?

Once again, I love rugby! I have just tried to limit the number of physical sports I take part in outside of skydiving. It would really suck to lose a couple of months skydiving because I threw my back out bowling. :D

So what's with the make-up on the cheeks then:P

and what's with plays last 2 seconds and then having to stop for a rest and change the team.. aren't they fit enough to play a whole game? :P

Not just (American) football but all the major league sports here, do that.

Rugby players are not as big or as fast as football players in similar positions. The heaviest international rugby forward you will ever see will be about 280lbs. There is no shortage of American Football linemen at 300+lbs, some even get over 400.

This is the easiest position to quantify since sheer bulk is the easiest thing to measure, but a similar effect will hold true for each speciality across the field. It is a simple biological fact of life that you cannot be a champion sprinter and marathon runner, nor can you be a competitive bodybuilder and climber. Absolute prowess in size, strength, power or speed will always come at the expense of the stature, cardio-vascular capabilities and even the type of muscle fibre you need to be an endurance athlete. Endurance comes at a cost, end of story. An American Footballer training for great endurance is both wasting his time and hurting his game.

An American football team is like a team of track and field single event specialists, great at one thing, shit at everything else - a rugby team is like a team of decathletes, each with a certain talent in one area, but trained to be capable in every event.

That said, in most areas the amount of power you lose is small compared to what you gain in endurance. Like for like, I can definitely believe that the collisions your body takes in big rugby tackles without armour are comparable to the hits in American football with armour. The main difference, IMO, are the rules concerning tackles. In Rugby Union you can't (for instance) tackle a player in the air, you can't pick him up and drive him head first into the deck, you can't tackle above shoulder height and you can't shoulder check, you need to attempt to grasp and hold the other player. It's those kind of tackles where a player can be taking a major hit to the head and neck that's a major reason for AF's need for helmets and pads. Rugby players still hit each other extremely hard, they just do it in the areas that their opponents body is capable of taking the hit. You can't train your brain not to get concussed.

Rugby is for men who relish some good medieval style prison sex....... without comiting to an actual prison sentence via a crime on their personal record... fags!!!!

Where I live Hard core Dykes do Rugby just to prove they're more than manly enough without the whole " growing a penis thing".

All of you get help, you need it.

But if you are really that "bad ass" try some CRW see you Saturday morning at the DZ if you are truelly as bad ass as you think.

To me you are all Poofers.. until you caress some nylon.

if there is one thing id rather do then watch an average match of either of the sports its crw, it would be a tough call though between crw and ireland v england in the world cup final

I had a close friend I used to do a lot of CRW with. This was more the more casual variety than big ways but we finished most of our jumps with it... biplane - side by side - downplane. We had a blast.

But there is no sport as brutal as our football. Rugby almost comes close. But it's still a distant second. And soccer? LOL That's for girls and little children. Baseball is far superior and complex compared to cricket. And basketball? I dunno... I'd compare it to basket weaving. Stupid fecking game.

whats the weather like on your planet?

you want brutal,

in ireland we have a national sport called hurling, id put a hurling team up against your american football teams any day of the week and id have a hard time choosing between a hurling team and a rugby team but the rugby guys would probably ease ahead due to sheer bulk rather then toughness bulk

Just for the record, I think Hurling is feckin' A COOL! B| The first time I saw it I wished we had it here. It looks like a blast to play.

But it's nothing compared to our football. No sport compares. And that's a fact.

I'm just sayin'.

You are tripping. Baseball more complex than cricket? LBW alone has more nuance than the entire baseball rule book!

I dunno, lawn bowls probably has almost as much standing around doing nothing:P

Seriusly, as much as I'll admit that American Footballers can hit harder than rugby players the sport as a whole is borderline unwatchable. Seems like it sold its soul to the TV dollar a long time ago, so if you prefer watching adverts to action, then you're welcome to it.

HA! What do you know of the baseball rulebook?
Explain the "infield fly rule" to me. :D QUICK! Do it now. Don't Google it.

If football was "borderline unwatchable" it wouldn't get the highest TV ratings of any sport in the world including that poofy world cup ya'll seem to love. I tried to watch the US play England but fell asleep. -YAWN- What a snoozer.

It was an Englishman who came up with the name "Soccer". Don't blame us!

"Rounders" is not baseball. :|
