  1. I've been following this discussion since the beginning. I don't agree with the idea of requiring qualifications to jump a wingloading and have said so. But I had a thought yesterday: How much difference would it make? That is, how many people who are getting hurt or killed would have met the qualifications and been 'legal' to jump the w/l they were? From what I've seen & read, the answer would be 'not many'. Most of the people I know who got hurt were fairly well qualified. They had the experience, the jumps and the skills to do what they were doing. They just screwed up. Some had the jumps and the advanced licenses, but didn't have the skills. Some of the 'new jumpers' who got hurt were under reasonably conservative canopies. They just thought they could do what the 'cool kids' were doing and flew themselves into the ground. This applies both to what I've personally experienced and what I've read on here. The one big exception to it was Sangi. And he had everyone on here telling him he was going to hurt himself for a fairly long time before he proved them right. The actual number of people who were on a canopy beyond their skill level when they got hurt is pretty small, as far as I can tell. Again, this is just my 'gut feeling', and doesn't really have any facts or statistics to back it up. I welcome correction from anyone who has better info.
  2. His original name was Sangi. After he biffed, and ended up paralyzed for life, he came back under the name "Clipped Wings" and owned his mistake. The one Virgin Burner started asking for donations for books for Sangi to read while in the hospital: https://www.dropzone.com/forums/topic/30584-anyone's-got-a-spare-50$-for-our-friend-sangi!%3F/ There's a couple other threads, including the one in incidents, but I can't seem to find them. The 'member page' has ALL the content from the person. In chronological order. For some folks, that's a few hundred pages.
  3. Hi guys, Provided you got the the member name correct then a member search is possible. You can look at https://www.dropzone.com/profile/69423-sangi/ for all the content done by that member, hopefully that narrows down the search somewhat.
  4. His name was Sangi - he unfortunately gets a mention in quite a lot of threads; https://www.dropzone.com/search/?q=sangi
  5. No easy answer. Drinking, smoking and driving are toughies. Kids at that age don't realize they aren't immortal. Rush got it right in Dreamline. So telling them that doing that stuff is a bad idea because it will cause long term harm won't sink in. They will 'worry about it later' or it 'won't happen to them'. There are some kids who won't believe that anything bad can happen to them. Sangi was an excellent example of that. It's pretty clear that different actions & decisions require different levels of maturity. Impulse control and empathy (understanding how ones actions affect others) can be taught early, but often aren't. That's why some choices are given kids earlier and some later. Of course, not all 18 year olds are 'grown up' enough to make good decisions on a lot of stuff. Hell, even some 30 year olds aren't. For criminal actions (like the one in the OP), it can be really difficult. Which is why the 'one size fits all' approach of automatically shifting kids into adult court for some crimes (or only keeping them in the juvenile system) is not always the best idea. Some kids are pretty far gone and 'rehabilitating' them is difficult if not impossible. Others made a bad choice, compounded it with more bad decisions and ended up in a lot of trouble, yet aren't really "all that bad".
  6. I went back to the beginning and read the first page or so. I'm pretty sure you are asking about Sangi. If you are, he's paralyzed for life. He came back on under the user name "Clipped wings." 7. So surprised that people are answering this seriously. It has all the hallmarks of trolling, just surprised it's a xfire 1 and not 3. How many people with 26 jumps use 'fully elliptical' etc. Yeah you are probably right, but then again, I also did not believe Sangi was a real person Besides, some real person may be reading this thread, wanting to do something just slightly less moronic, and getting the impression that he is making conservative choices.
  8. Just search for sangi on here and youtube. Wheelchairs are kinda cool, was driving one for probably 5 month, because of some stupid downsize. Too bad this is a troll, the last post Was just too obvious. I had high hopes to witness the birth of the next world champion of canopy piloting. ------------------------------------------------------- To absent friends
  9. Suggest you read Sangi's downsize story: https://youtu.be/tF578oSkrKk http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=4203276;search_string=sangi;#4203276
  10. I feel like Sangi should've stayed on Katana. The ground hungriness of Katana would have let him hook higher thus giving him more chance to abort the turn. It is not really safe to learn how to swoop with super short recovery arc canopy. Had he made same choice of low turn with no intention to abort with Katana, Sangi would've been dead. I think I rather wanna be dead than be paralyzed like Sangi. Bernie Sanders for President 2016
  11. it always turns to sangi 2.0. sangi busted 360°'s with 150 jumps until he got busted. and posted EVERY (questionable!) video. no courses. no mentoring. just one bad decision after the other. at one point he's had a sub-100 katana, was it a 90? i dont remember. he smacked in with about 180 jumps, pretty much right after he went back to his 129 safire2, from hard pressing from side, public naming and shaming and even calling his dz about his katana. “Some may never live, but the crazy never die.” -Hunter S. Thompson "No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try." -Yoda
  12. This thread definitely went to tar and feathers. I read: Want a smaller container because I take freeflying seriously; Want a container I can make many downsizes with. I don't fly my canopy radically and may start HP landings next season. How that turned into Sangi 2.0 is really posters feeding off of posters comments and not really what the OP was saying. What size did you end up buying? Are you considering going to a low bulk main? etc. Hope it works out for you. Sadly, one of the most important questions people ask (Should I downsize?) is always responded to with tar and feathers.
  13. I think people posting dates they think he is going to bounce and comparing him to sangi can be classified as overreacting. Sangi bounced because he started swooping before he was ready. Flying a basic pattern is not comparable. OP I am glad you have decided to stay at the 150. The canopy is more than capable of scaring the shit out of you. So will have fun.
  14. That's just bullshit. You know as well as I do that what prompts reactions like this are when people are making stupid decisions but are displaying arrogance when justifiying them. The 'I'm exceptional', or 'I understand the risks' argument just doesn't hold water. You've made some pretty questionable decisions about your canopy choices in the past if I remember correctly, and weren't exactly receptive to those comments at the time - even though you'd just been giving Sangi the exact same advice. Maybe that's colouring your perspective about the feedback possible on the board. I can think of several threads in the last month about people wanting to downsize inappropriately which didn't end up like this one. Again - it's the attitude which brings on the shitstorm. That's a learning point. not sure where you got the "you've made questionable canopy-decisions part" off or from. got a used rig with a 150 sabre, next step was a 119er safire2 with the shiny, custom-made micron to go with it. at 250 jumps. gained a bit of weight, dropped a lot, bought baserigs with 265ers in there. not thinking about downsizing anytime soon. as i havent jumped much lately due to a work-accident that almost left me killed or seriously disabled. but hasnt. so, better get your facts straight, spit out what bothers you or whatelse is on your mind. if i could read the crystal-ball, i'd be living in my fancy penthouse i can jump from since i've won the lottery or.. yea, well, sorry to say, just shut your trap. and i mean that in the friendliest way possible!
  15. That's just bullshit. You know as well as I do that what prompts reactions like this are when people are making stupid decisions but are displaying arrogance when justifiying them. 16. No. When the consequences of a bad decision are as serious as they are in skydiving, people will tell you the truth. It may be unpleasant, but it's the truth. The video of Sangi's accident is a stark reality of what can happen. If you don't understand that, you really need to step away from the sport for a bit. You got a lot of "You're going to die" comments because far, far too many people have died jumping canopies that were too small for them. There have been more than a few people who died under small canopies who knew what they were doing, and just made the 'wrong mistake at the wrong time' and didn't survive the error. People are blunt on here, going so far as to "predict" a date to make it clear that this is serious. As was noted above, too many younger people are "invincible." They say that they understand the risk. They say that they are willing to accept the consequences. But they don't really. They truly don't believe that it can happen to them. They won't admit that to anyone else. They may not even admit it to themselves. Your attitude and comments are very typical of a 'young hotshot" who is "above average" (or at least believes so). What is known as "Madd Skilz." Whether or not you really are that type, I don't know. All we have to go by is your written word. So the reaction here is typical. A lot of that type get hurt. Some just have a close call. And often quit after that, saying something like "I really didn't realize it could happen to me." Some get killed. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo
  17. dude, dont EVER ask a question about downsizing on here. shitstorm waiting to happen. but yea, about sangi.. he's a friend of mine, and he didnt listen to ANY advice, and i've seen his videos. if you think you'll be fine and you're confident about it, go for it. i once miss-eyed ad 90°, got the visual, thought to myself "oh, THAT's how it looks like to femur!" and stabbed it out. i hit hard, went back up another 3 meters and just kept the thing flying to a final (stand-up) landing. one of the instructors asked me "do you want me to talk about this to you!?" - my answer "nah, i know that was stoopid!" just be alert, every. fucking. time. skydiving maims and kills people. and sometimes those people are still virgins at the age of 20-something, and they'll stay that way. just like sangi. be aware of your decisions, and live with the consequences!
  18. No i won´t, but still considering to stay @ 150 (wih my 160 reserve). The main reason i want to go with a 135 is that i think it´s okay when I just go for straight landings and really slowly built up speed. I definitely won´t swoop or even do a 90° / double front risers, just really slowly get used to it. And the other is, that both my instructor and rigger said if i´m carful it should be fine. Both know me well and so they should know, that im not an irrational person. But to be shure, thats it´s only a light dumb idea and not a totally stupid idea, i thought i ask the "masses" for their opinion. @Freak: Thanks for the links, after watching the videos i really feel bad for Sangi :( But I think there is a big difference between slowly getting used to a smaller chute or going for a radical 270° swoop. I am not considering to swoop within the next 300 jumps, a month ago a friend @ my DZ hit the ground, because he thought he can handle a 270° with around 300 jumps.
  19. Sangi... http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=4203276;page=1;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=100; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pEC-wkrWEUk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YZHpdtQVMw HAVE FUN... ...JUST DONT DIE
  20. The bottom line (whether it's really your opinion or you're playing the role like a troll) is that you feel you're superior to the literally hundreds of thousands of jumps pitted against your fraction of 1% of the experience you're pissing against. "Written in blood" may be the hyperbole, but it's accurate. When long-time experienced people offer advice, when hundreds of POV videos online support their/our position, you're that *one* guy who is special (or may be speshul) and we're all a bunch of idiots trying to keep you down. If nothing else, you've become infamous for your armchair skydiving opinions and the rest of us know nothing compared to you, as you've read every DZ.com post and have analyzed every opinion to boil it down to the bare facts. You've absorbed those facts and therefore are a superior jumper to everyone else who in thousands of jumps, hasn't learned what you've learned via analysis and life experience outside of skydiving. You win. Go do what you want to do, but be fully prepared to reap the wrath when you harm yourself, an aircraft, or someone else. There have been several Ted's, Sangi's, and others in this online community. Now we have a JWest. You keep doing this, try and stay on topic. I am not claiming to know to know more than every one or even that I know I lot. I am debating one very specific point. People keep claiming that it's not possible to "film and forget.' Not only are they claiming it, they refuse to believe that it is possible. I know I am not the only one who can and very few people have admitted it in this thread. I've never jumped a camera, I've used them many times during other "dangerous" activities, I've been on loads when my buddies were filming, I've been on loads when we had outside video. I was capable of 'forgetting' that the cameras were there and stayed focused on the activity. There are many people that are capable of that same thing yet some people in this thread refuse to believe that it's possible. When you check your reserve pin on the ground and it's straight and properly seated do you put it in the back of your mind or are you constantly thinking about it wile turning points? This is how I imagine that going" and turn, dock, shit what about my pin, and turn, BUT MY PIN, dock, MY PIN!!, turn, PINNNNNN, dock, AAHHHH" Mess up the jump. That doesn't happen, you check it, if its good you go about your jump. If you are capable of putting one thing in the back of your mind you are capable of putting another. You can replace reserve pin with any of the items on your pre boarding checklist. Yes those are skydiving essentials but that does not effect your ability to put them in the back of your mind. You should be able to do the same with non essentials. I make sure I do everything I can to prevent harming a plane or another person. The safety of others around me is more important to me than my personal safety. My discussion about cameras has made me infamous! Neat! If something happened to me you guys can say "I told you so." Hopefully nothing bad happens under my 1ish loaded docile 7-cell. As a DZO, it is reasoning enough for me. It saves me time and oxygen debating with hotshots who have less than the minimum requirements. Time which I'd rather spend doing my job as well as I can. When you have the 200 jump minimum, feel free to discuss your intentions, and convince me of your worthiness. I may then let you jump your camera at my DZ. Then again you may show up with 500 jumps and ask the same question. I may refuse. Its my decision and arguing the point will only get you so far. Your attitude and reaction when faced with a refusal will play a big part in my decision NEXT time you ask for permission to endanger yourself on MY DZ. That's how us DZO's operate. When you run a DZ, you might begin to see our POV. That is your decision and your drop zone so I respect that. Thank's for acknowledging that just because you have 200+ jumps does not mean you are ready to fly a camera.
  21. Sangi, whatever happened to that guy? I liked how he trolled. Bernie Sanders for President 2016

  23. This is the Sangi guy they are referring to btw unless you are familiar with the name already, @Zsombi. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF578oSkrKk
  24. just as a quick question, which DZ/Country (if you prefer to remain vague) condones jumping such canopies at those wingloading with your experience ? Seriously, slow down a bit. Read a bit about Sangi, maybe get him on Facebook. He might be the right person to keep you on your feet for a long time. scissors beat paper, paper beat rock, rock beat wingsuit - KarlM
