  1. See Jerry's answer. These were stock PCs at first, and (IIRC) the colors of the first PC I jumped in 1966 -- the "school" canopies at Orange. Next jump I bought my own. But this picture was probably taken in the late 60s, and there were still a lot of these colors around. HW
  2. Probably not a bag but a POD, which was coming into widespread use then. I'm doing a presentation at the PIA/Museum gig in DeLand in August about (among other things) things used to slow down openings. I'll have my Volplane hydraulic reefer as well as one of the first sliders ever made. HW
  3. Jumptown has quotes for imprinted drives in the ~$5.50 range for 256 mb. We'll probably start adding the option in the next month or so, not as a replacement but a supplement to the DVD, as we already do with YouTube uploads. HW
  4. We've lost another pioneer, Bill Jolly, D-26. He was a Navy veteran and a long-time employee of Pioneer Parachute Co. With Jacques Istel, Nate Pond and Lew Sanborn, he was on the first two international skydiving records in the US -- in 1961, for both day and night four-way team accuracy. In this picture, Bill at right with Lee Guilfoyle (D-50) and Istel. HW
  5. I have a lot of articles too, and can look them up. I've posted stuff about this here. . The B-25 was sold to a group at Turners Falls, MA, but the FAA never allowed it to be used for jumping. It sat around, deteriorating, for about two years, then was sold again. The ferry pilot flew it to Orange, MA, to practice landings; he was not at all current. It crashed, killing him-- the only occupant. HW
  6. The USPA BOD is meeting in Nashua, NH July 16-18. The day before, many BOD members and staff will be joining us at Jumptown in Orange, MA, for a day of jumping and a dinner. We will be providing transportation to and from for members and staff; we may be able to accommodate a few others. If you're interested, PM me for details. HW
  7. Surprisingly, not so. I've talked to several people who went to a rigger course this winter, and they would have had to pay extra to learn how to pack a round. HW
  8. From the Golden Knights Alumni Assn.: --- Wil 'Squeak' Charette died Sunday night, 9 May, 2010. Amy, his wife and survivor notified us and informed us their will be a service followed by a burial in Arlington National Cemetary at a later date. Details will be released as we get them. Squeak was a legend in the parachuting world. A founding member of the STRAC Parachute Team, an original US Army Parachute Team, 'The Golden Knights', an early HALO concept instructor, an early developer on oxygen use for parachuting, a Special Forces and CIA asset that started as a tech and rose to the upper echelons of each. ---- HW
  9. That might have been me. We also wore paper bags in the Stinson at Norfolk,MA. HW
  10. What sort of airplane would take you to 60s on student status in the sixties? Certainly not one used at a civilian DZ. HW
  11. Allow me to talk mid 60's. 2 static lines 3 static line practice pulls First freefall (same day as last DRCP) 2 more 5s 3 10s 3 15s And you're on your own. HW
  12. Oh, I knew it wasn't Slyde, and I know who he is, but his posts reminded me a bit. BTW Slyde is now on Facebook. HW
  13. Why do I get the feeling that Slyde is back among us? HW
  14. OK, here's the handwritten note on the original scan. Does it make any sense? HW
  15. Because that's what their clueless "exhibit designer" decided to do with the canopy. HW
  16. This is a box used to ship eight C-9 canopies (DOM Nov. 52) to Hill AFB from the Atlantic Parachute Company in Lowell, MA. Atlantic, formed in 1942, was a major supplier of military parachute in and after WWII. The American Textile History Museum in Lowell has an exhibit of parachutes -- unfortunately with a canopy draped over the tail of a Cessna 150. HW
  17. Jumptown (Orange, MA) is open Thu-Sun. Pepperell, MA is open seven days. Both have Super Otters. HW
  18. Dave's ash dive will be at Skydive New England in Maine. Gary Pond's ash dive will be the same weekend at Jumptown. HW
