  1. kim.. come see me when i have a sport main again and joe's not slave-driving me..... if you haven't got your D license by then, i'll certainly do some video for you..... see how my neck feels tomorrow
  2. frank!!!! how's are ya? i hope it gets better.. the neck is still... ouch.. course i jumped another full day today...witha nice canopy, tho. to and ser everyone's questions... it was a 384EZ.. the ranch is all sigma rigs... about about 70% sigma mains. the sigmas have always trated me beautifully.. this was a back-to-back where the rig was at the laoding area for me.. not much of a a choice... perfectly regulation vector tandem bands... but as i didn't pack it, i dunno how well/large the stows were done. as for the student.... said his thighs were a bit sore, but i think he made out better being more loose, where as i was expecting one thing and got quite another.... the neck is being held together with massage and buprofin... probably shouldn't be jumping for a few days 'eh? hmmmmm maybe i should call off tomorrow.. gak Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time
  3. and this is how my day went.... ouch it's a small file... 400k.... oh yeah.. NOT my packjob Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time
  4. oh yeah, i remember him.. wasn't he jumping a 55? some of the worst canopy piloting i've seen someone walk away from... lucky SOB anyone know who that was?? Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time
  5. That's probably crosstalk from another line or lines whose wires run close to yours. The staccato you describe sounds like the high(er) voltage ring signal that gets sent down the line to let you phone know someone is calling (it used to have to drive the motors to ring the bells on the phone). 6. I know couple who bought smerican flag style canopies and painted on the stars with some sort of rubbery paint. IIRC it had pretty good longevity, too. I'll write 'em and ask what it was and if they'd recomend it again (they're both riggers). 7. well.. just onetarily, the sooner you stop renting the better... so if you buy the rig now, you can put aside the money you're saving on rental to do a tunnel camp. if you do the tunnel camp now, you're going to have to KEEP waiting for the rig because you're still paying rental fees, and can't put that money aside for anything. plus having your own rig lets you get to know YOUR equipment, and you never have to worry about someone else renting it out before you, and never questioning if the 2 jumps you made were worth the daily rental price (if they rent that way). go for the rig, nothing like having YOUR OWN equipment. I loved my first rig, even though it was a piece of crap. Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time
  8. that depends on several things. really look at WHY she'll be downsizing: How does she feel under the sabre 150? Does she feel the need for more speed, faster responsivenes and less forgiveness to inputs? Where is the decision to downsize come from? Is it she, you, others on the DZ? The trend these days seems to be to get smaller jumpers to an 'ideal' windloading, often w/o regard for their current skill and comfort level. remember, 1:1 for her and 1:1 for you are two vastly different performance ranges, hers being the more dangerous. the phrase "does taking my wife down..." scares me. Who's making gear decisions for your wife? At her level it really should be her with guidance from her instructors. As a boyfriend of a low-time jumper i know the temptation to 'help' our ladies with their skydiving choices, but we really need to be careful about the help that we give. SHE should be driving this decision. We should be there for support and advice, especially when it comes to safety issues, but having us making gear choices for them is nothing but a detriment to their growth as competant and independant skydivers. So, yes, i would say that you downsizing her to a 135 is a very bad decision indeed. If she wants to downsize to a 135, that's another issue all together. 9. actually, he said 3 seconds.... then again he said finley was uder 600 feet when he chopped.. even though finley said he was at 850 when he got hit Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time
  10. I dig, but not everyone who reads this will be as savvy. I think most people would discourage that if it were run by them, but my fear is someone going out, trying it w/o talking to an instructor and breaking themselves because no one said they shouldn't do it. Well, i'm saing it, for you and any other students who might be reading. quite welcome... and thank you. 11. if you beliece that properly executed turns at a safe height made by someone looking before the turn are more dangerous than having students flying at the stall point of their canopies in likely turbulent conditions only to have them surge at the ground right before landing, i hope you're never in a position of authority at a DZ. that you're suggesting is tantamount to having students performing hookturns. You're removing the turn, but you're still ahving them diving at the ground with little room for error. Students can barely tell wha height to flare at on a normal approach, nevermind what you're describing. As i said before I'm not debating (or supporting) the merit of your advice, my issue is more with your targetted audience. here's a short version: At best it's an advanced (read: dangerous) technique, don't suggest it to students. Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time
  12. My problem with this advice is that you're recommending low-altitude near-stall scenarios AND low-altitude diving canopy surges to a student. While this may or may not be good advice for more experienced canopy pilots, having a student, especially one you don't know anything about, perform these maneuvers low to the ground is downright irresponsible and dangerous. Even beyond that, on many DZs the advice is flat-out wrong because student canopies have their brakes trimmed to not come anywhere near the stall point on a normal flare. The would, in effect, just be going into 2/3 brakes on a normal full-flare. S-turns may be "a thing of the past" for experienced jumpers in the middle of a busy patters, but as far as i've seen they're still taught to students because usually, at that level, their patterns still leave a lot to be desired. Please, when dishing out advice that could be very dangerous if done just a little bit wrong, consider to whom it's being given. yes, but you'll also pick up a lot of speed, so the benefit of the maneuver is dependent on how much alti you can lose the the near-stall section of the maneuver. Reserve lines

that could very well be the extreme temperature changes that firefighters are more prone than most to be exposed to, yesno? Do you know of a similar reglation for kevlar helmets vests, etc.. for military and police types? 15. and also felt the need to further belabor the point on which jerm already admitted he mis-thought his original reply based on the circumstances. so tthppppttt!!! Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time
  16. dude.... read what you just wrote, i've highlighted it above "phase one levels the canopy out", well the canopy won't be leveled out with any vertical speed left, therefore phase one arrests vertical speed. further: if the canopy is leveld out, and has no vertical speed, thenthe only thing left is horizontal speed, if there's a llot of this we call it a swoop. We use the last part of the flare to keep the increased andgle-of-attack in order to KEEP the vertical componant at zero until we've bled off enough speed to put our feet down. Now... this CAN be different in high winds... a little brake can slow the flight of the canopy enough to stop groundspeed at first.. then finish the flare to stop vertical speed, but that's a groundspeed vs airspeed issue. and perhaps that's where the confusion is. In which case your original post was more correct, for that situation, then i originally posed at however, Skymoney's quote still supports my argment in case anyone else is still confused by this, in anything but high winds, think of it this way.. if phase one didn't stop the vertical speed, you'd crash into the ground before you got to the second phase. if you arrest the horizontal speed first, then you have no speed and therefore no lift and cannot arrest the vertical speed. Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time
  17. funny... when i start to flare my stop vertically but still ahve horizontal speed.. when i continue my flare that's when the horizontal speed is abated.. Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time

    WTF?!?!

I call bullshit! No way someone hangs 24 bottles of beer from a prince albert! And I would know. fine fine, i'll grab the video from the DZ this weekend and take a still from it. Trust me, it happened, with over 100 witnesses Landing without injury is not necessarily evidence that you didn't fuck up... it just means you got away with it this time
  19. Haven't you heard that saying? You don't get dumped in this sport, you just lose your turn? i've heard it, and i've heard a lot of people say it, still seems to be a lot of "as the prop turns", though. hell, a friend of mine recently had an X switch DZs to be able to continue stalking her... and ther 'turn' was less than a month.... freaky. WTF?!?!

for suspension in the opposite direction.... a buddy of mine hands a case of beer from his prince albert.... *shudder* that's bottles, boys & girls... corona to be precise.
