  1. Palin was at least Governor of Alaska. While she wasn't considered a very good one, holding a Governor's office is a typical step to the White House. Carter, Clinton, Reagan & Bush 2 all were off the top of my head. Again, Harris was a US Senator. California AG. DA of San Francisco (all elected offices). Before that she worked in the Alameda County DA's office, San Francisco DA's office and for the City of San Francisco. Kind of hard to say she was chosen because she was a "Woman of Color". But you seem to be saying it anyway.
  2. Apparently, early Bolts did the same thing. Mine turns on the brake lights if I lift using OPD, or if I pull the 'regen paddle', a lever on the back of the steering wheel that activates full power regen.
  3. The Chevy Bolt has a nifty thing called "One Pedal Driving" (OPD). Lifting off the accelerator pedal (I'm not going to call it the 'gas pedal') puts it into full regen. All the way to a complete stop. There have been a couple anecdotal stories about accidents that were avoided because the car stopped incredibly fast. It's been suggested that OPD starts braking as soon as the accelerator comes up, so the delay between lifting and nailing the brake pedal doesn't factor in as much. Since OPD doesn't use the brakes at all, the brake master, caliper pistons and caliper sliders don't see any use. So it's suggested putting the car in neutral and using the brakes to stop once or twice a week to keep things from getting gunged up and not moving. Since I drive for a living, I don't use OPD. I want to keep the 'muscle memory' reflex of lifting off the accelerator, moving to the brake and slamming on the pedal for panic stops. But even the brake pedal goes into regen when pressed gently. There's a fair amount of pedal travel before the actual friction brakes become a factor. My car had 16k on it when I got it. The inspection report said the brake pads were 'like new'.
  4. 'Cuz 'only the little people pay taxes'. (Bonus points to anyone who remembers who said that)
  5. If I understand correctly, declaring a 'military emergency' and using the troops to help hold power was part of the plan to keep Trump in office.
  6. It worked for Bush 1 & Biden (not the first try) and Nixon (also not the first try). It didn't work for Mondale, Gore, or Humphrey (Johnson's).
  7. She didn't have national 'name recognition'. I'm going to guess (not much more than an amateur poli-sci geek) that a lot of her lack of support was that she was seen as 'non-viable' on the national stage. Sort of "she'll never get anywhere, so I'm not going to waste my vote".
  8. Well, she's not unpopular with people who don't hate women with brown skin. She's quite qualified. US Senator, State Attorney General, prosecutor, a solid background of being effective in all those positions. (Note: The overall misogyny and racism in the US mean that her qualifications are WELL ABOVE what any white man would need to obtain those positions) Far better qualified than Quayle or Gore, who both had the main qualification of being born to rich and powerful daddies.
  9. Biden was quite qualified. In fact, I don't think he added to his qualifications from 2016 to 2020. Cheney, while rather evil, was quite qualified. He'd been in fairly high government positions for a long time. SecDef under Bush 1 (during Desert Storm), House Minority Whip for a short time before becoming SecDef Chief of Staff under Ford. Many people also consider Cheney to be the 'real power' when Bush 2 was in office. I don't fully believe that, but he had a LOT more power and authority than a typical VP. Ford did ok. Not great, but he was given a really shitty deal when he took office. Johnson did pretty good. He was a pretty awful person, but he took Kennedy's legacy and kept some of it going (Civil Rights and the space program).
  10. Not unlike Tina Fey parodying Sarah Palin, it's best to watch a mash up of both Britt & Johanssen, first one saying a bit, then the other saying the same part. In this case, Johanssen took some liberties with what Britt said. When Tina Fey did it, all she changed was the inflection and the timing. And it was truly brutal.
  11. So why, exactly, should Biden replace Harris as his running mate. And with whom?
  12. It's not all that scary. Just non-typical. So the fools can't figure out how to pronounce it, and absolutely refuse to be 'told' how.
  13. Why would he switch? Harris has a record of doing a good job, no scandals (no legitimate ones), presented well as VP. She hasn't misspelled 'potato'. Are you suggesting that if Biden has a real chance of not finishing his term, he should dump the woman with dark skin? Because she's a woman with dark skin?
  14. Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos started off supporting Trump's claims of 'election fraud'. But once it became clear that the 'fraud' was all from Trump, Vos backed off and ended up firing the former State Supreme Court justice he had hired as an investigator. So, of course, the Trumpettes retaliated. They tried to 'primary' Vos, and are now engaged in a recall attempt. Of course, that takes money. So Trump's "Save America" PAC funnelled money to the opponent. Allegedly illegally. The Ethics Commission has recommended felony charges against several individuals, including a sitting state representative. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/wisconsin-ethics-panel-recommends-felony-charges-against-trump-fundraising-committee-lawmaker
  15. Like so many things, "muscle car" is pretty subjective. My understanding is that 'true' muscle cars are full sized sedans, with the biggest motor available. Although smaller motors (both 6 & 8 cylinder) were available, unless it had the big block V-8 it wasn't truly a muscle car. Chargers & Road Runners, Impalas & Belvederes, GTOs (LeMans body), 442s & F-85s, Torinos & Galxies. Put a big V-8, the big 426 Hemi in the Mopars, and you have a 'muscle car'. Stuff like Camaros, Mustangs, Barracudas, at least the earlier ones, were considered 'pony cars', not true muscle cars. Another measure was what NASCAR was running. Road Runners, Chargers, Torinos, Impalas, Monte Carlos & Grand Prix (Prixes?) into the 70s. Camaros & Mustangs were running Trans Am road races. Sports car races. Again, very subjective and not any 'official' definition. Good point. I have a 600 that could probably turn a sub 12 if I really tried. I choose to not beat on it that much, Still, just about any EV can take most ICE cars off the line. The electric drive generates every available foot pound of torque from 1 RPM on up. Without any sort of torque curve, the power delivery is amazing. I have a (reasonably) cheap little Bolt, and if I push on it, I can beat most cars when the light turns green. It's also handy for passing on 2 lane roads. Swing out, hit it, and I can get around and back in super quick.
  16. From the article: I think the court system is getting a bit tired of the Mango Mussolini's bullshit. About fucking time.
  17. Well, it's described as 'coming in waves', but I think the individual immigrants would be more characteristic of particles.
  18. Pfft. Much of Mexico is "European colonizers". Descendents of the Spaniards who conquered it. Or the French, who ruled it for a while. Lots and lots of Mexicans are 'not brown'. Besides, if the US had taken over Mexico (and subsequently gone down into Central America), and then treated the native population the same way they handled that 'problem' in what is now the US, then there'd be very few 'brown people' left.
  19. 11.5 in the quarter mile? I guess the Tesla doesn't count as a 'muscle car'. The "Plaid" has done a quarter mile in less than 9 seconds. In all seriousness, a sub-12 second quarter mile is really fast. Unmodified ICE vehicles that can do that are pretty rare and very expensive.
  20. That's funny. Ft Sumter was US Army property. Federal property. As was all the equipment the Confederates stole. That overall idea is something the 'secessionists' in various places seem to not realize. If Texas, for example, leaves the US, they lose ALL the military bases both 'regular' and Reserves). And NASA in Houston. And all the defense contractors. And all their Social Security money. And all their federal (military & civilian) pensions. And a lot more. I've seen some economic estimates, and people smarter than I have said they'd be broke in less than 3 years.
  21. I don't know the process for selling to Carvana, but the buyer is at least sort of protected. Any major issues have to be disclosed. And anything that isn't ok when the car is delivered is supposed to get fixed. My neighbor bought a car from them and when it arrived, the brakes were shot. Worn out. Carvana replaced them. Came, picked the car back up, fixed it and returned it. It took a while, but they did it.
  22. While I don't think it represents the majority, there are a LOT of cops who are Trumpettes, and authoritarian bullies. Don't forget that Kyle Rittenhouse, after killing 2 people and severely wounding another, walked up to the cops while holding a loaded rifle. They told him to go home. OTOH, the guy who shot & killed a Trumpette at a protest, in what could well have been legitimate self defense, was shot and killed 'resisting arrest while armed', yet a weapon wan't found. And don't forget about the Biden bus that the Trumpanzee assholes tried to run off the road in Texas. The people on the bus called the cops, but they 'couldn't be bothered' to respond.
  23. Depends on the car. The Porsche Cayenne (SUV) had a hell of a problem with cylinder scoring. There wasn't any admission from Porsche (not surprising), but a fair amount of 1st & 2nd gen models had motors that would self destruct somewhere between 75k & 100k miles. Apparently it was a manufacturing defect (which is why Porsche was silent) and the cylinder walls weren't finished properly. It was silent until it was too late. 1st there would be an increase in oil consumption, then there would be a ticking from the motor. By that time, the block was destroyed. It's an alusil block, so there's no boring it out, and sleeving the bores is almost as expensive as a replacement motor (which could also be susceptible to scoring). You couldn't even inspect for it. The scoring started down at the bottom, so by the time it was visible to a borescope (even with the piston at BDC), it was too late. The depreciation on them was pretty severe, so by the time they got to that point, they weren't worth a whole lot ($20k-$30k) and fixing or replacing the motor was not worth it.
  24. Digital Altimeter: Polarized glasses can make it very hard to read the LCD display. Make sure to see how it affects it on the ground.
  25. I want to know exactly what rights these 'protections to each and every member' would entail. Tax deductions? How about people who have multiple embryos in frozen storage? Can they take deductions for each and every one? How about child support? Can the presumptive father be held financially responsible for pre-natal care? How about citizenship? Because anyone born in the country is a citizen, would this mean anyone conceived in the country be one too? I'm sure there are a lot of other things that the alt-right would lose their shit over. This is just what I can think of off the top of my head.
