  1. Yeah. You're gonna be fine. Every fight is a food fight if you're a cannibal Goodness is something to be chosen. When a man cannot choose, he ceases to be a man. - Anthony Burgess
  2. Gotta admit - my first jump was SL and I remember only being scared by sitting in the Cessna by the open door. Once I got the go ahead to climb out, I felt MUCH better. The deployment and the T-10 ride was rather mellow by comparison. Now, a NON-deployment would have been a bit more stressful. 5. Ok, you seem to be the first to trot it out, so I'll pick on you... FMD/FPD/First Soulless Ginger-haired Hermaphrodite With A Gimp Leg Down - wtf? Is everyone trying so hard to be PC? Can't we simply make it FSBD (First Sentient Being Down)? After all, what the fuck are you going to do once the dolphins start jumping? 6. In "MY WORLD" young lady, I ask questions of speakers until I believe I sense the feeling beneath the volcano. We all do our best, and wee all want the same thing, all wee hairy apes of the future. Jump on this, sweetie pie. Go on down faster toward the center of the earth with us all ... no contact necessary. 7. I suggest that you recognize that skydiving represents freedom. Skydiving also represents personal responsibility. Archaic and anti-freedom drug laws from all over the world are stripping us of our right to alter our minds in what ever way we choose...be it drugs or jumping out of an airplane. No nation, no state, no city and no other individual has the right to tell me what I can do with my own mind. Drugs and skydiving are personal choice issues. I personally choose jumping out of airplanes and doing illicit drugs. Please and thank you. +1 I'm still having trouble with stability in FF with the attache case - still giving lessons? 8. An altimeter, airspeed indicator and engine instruments according to the FAA. A bit more if flying at night or IFR. Wow! I can see your rigid back from way over here. You need to relax a bit. He's talking about what's needed to find your way around the sky, not what the FAA requires for a legal flight. And he was saying it with humor not sarcasm. Also pants. You're gonna need pants. 13. Magical canopy faeries tell me which way the wind blows. I have noticed that in a strong, constant wind - my speed relative to the ground varies. If my ground speed varies while the wind speed is constant, then I must be changing speed inside the airmass also. Example - on a long spot, with the wind to my back - I spread out my arms and get big so that I catch as much air as I can. I make my suit act like a sail. The air has a higher ground speed than I do, so it moves around me. If I block it, it gives me an extra push. I think everybody will admit to having done this because they understand how it works. Simple concept. Y'know, I've really been mulling this over and I've had a change of heart - I think HappyCamper's actually on the right track here... this could work! Consider this: You're in the cabin of an aircraft flying 500kts and, depending on which way you walk fore & aft in the aisle, your ground speed varies. The acft has a higher groundspeed than I do, so obviously it's acting on me. (I hope all you 'calcumlater & nummers' guys are following this)... If I spread out my arms, legs, etc. so I get more contact with the acft, I'm clearly going to get more push. Now, admittedly, I generally doze off, BUT as evidenced emperilikly, I always seem to get to my destination faster, thereby proving my theory! I think everybody will admit to having done this. All you fizziks-geeks can go stuff it. Every fight is a food fight if you're a cannibal Goodness is something to be chosen. When a man cannot choose, he ceases to be a man. - Anthony Burgess

  17. Dude, the particular rise/set times might vary a bit by lat/long, but it's simply physically impossible for a full moon to rise much later than sunset. There's no way it can rise in the middle of the night. It'd be a waning quarter-moon if it rose at that time. If anyone's confused, this'll help... http://home.hiwaay.net/~krcool/Astro/moon/moonphase/ Every fight is a food fight if you're a cannibal Goodness is something to be chosen. 18. Are you saying the full moonrise was at 1am? If that's the case, your astrophysics are different than mine... back on the 'ol family farm, our full moon rose right around sunset and was full overhead at midnight. Then again, I do seem to recall seeing a full moon or two right in the landing area on some night jumps. Every fight is a food fight if you're a cannibal Goodness is something to be chosen. 19. That and ya'll were far better at spotting because it mattered! And the covered wagons really weren't moving that fast, either. Every fight is a food fight if you're a cannibal Goodness is something to be chosen. When a man cannot choose, he ceases to be a man. - Anthony Burgess
  20. Not exactly true. The last few dozen landings I've done have been almost solely on rears and I've never stalled it and have yet to "pound it". Many of the landings are fast, but most are easily stood up, even with a bit of a slide. All it takes is being willing to bring it in fast. If you do some down-wind landings with toggles, you'll get used to the speed before landing on rears. I jump a Stiletto 150 and usually have a double-front, or 90/180 front riser initiation to kick things off, so there's a little bit of additional speed to deal with - deliberately. IMHO, the key to having the confidence in the control input is playing with your canopy up high. I've invested many high pulls (all the way) just because I love flying my canopy. If you use all your control inputs regularly - fronts, rears, harness, toggles, when it comes time to HAVE to do it, the reactions will come automatically. You can't be scared of your canopy - fly the damn thing like you love it. Every fight is a food fight if you're a cannibal Goodness is something to be chosen. 21. There's also a 3rd option: canopy transfer. I'm not necessarily advocating it, I'm simply noting that the technique exists. Don't forget a 4th option - the reverse Mr. Bill. Simply find the nearest jumper under canopy, dock, and cling like a leech. Not necessarily advocating it.... Every fight is a food fight if you're a cannibal Goodness is something to be chosen. 23. I've seen only one, and while the suit wasn't "worn through," the wear marks were pretty evident. He's more or less a newer wingsuiter, so probably doesn't have more than 50 jumps on it. I'd meant to ask about it, but he was gone before we got to have much discussion. To a far, far better place, I hope. Who'd-a thunk an almost worn-thru wingsuit would have caused such a tragedy? 24. Forgot to add mine... 458/0 90375 + 458 = 90833 179 + 0 = 179 90833/179 = 507.45 Every fight is a food fight if you're a cannibal Goodness is something to be chosen. When a man cannot choose, he ceases to be a man. - Anthony Burgess
  25. Perhaps a bit of a math error here, since Pat gave his subtotal of cutaways as 165, not 175. If your number was actually 1 in 2100 jumps, that'd bring the ratio of cutaways to jumps as 483.8:1 All calculations from this point forward being redone would bring the cumulative total to 84350 /172, yielding 490.40 In any event, this means I'm on the brink of statistical imminence. I'll plan on pre-buying beer and also my rigger's requirement. Every fight is a food fight if you're a cannibal Goodness is something to be chosen.
